“First Trip to Ireland”
Reviewed 29 July 2014

Stayed two nights here and it was nice. While not air conditioned, we did have to deal with outside noises (talking, buses, etc.) because the window needed to remain opened. There were nice dinner options each night and everything was in walking distance. I did enjoy the uniqueness of the hotel with the old stained glass windows and architecture.

Stayed two nights at this hotel. We have stayed in Ennis before but this hotel was far superior to the previous hotel. It has lovely high vaulted ceilings. We ate in the restaurant the first night and had an excellent meal of steak then went into the bar and listened to the band.
We also had two breakfast with a buffet of cereals, fruits and juices etc. You then chose from a menu, we had the full Irish, which was piping hot when served to you. Tea, coffee and toast were all served at the table. Bedrooms were a fair size with a good range of toiletries. We had two rooms on the ground floor overlooking the square and car park. As buses and coaches stop there it might be worth asking for a room at the rear of the hotel, although we did not find it noisy. On the second night we had a lovely meal at Brogans just around the corner and the enjoyed the traditional music in the bar.

Would we return, definitely.

Second visit to this hotel and again a great experience. Hotel is a great place to relax and provides easy access to the Southwest of Ireland. The highlight of this hotel is the staff who are friendly and incredibly helpful. A special mention to Catherine at reception who went out of her way to find us a restaurant after a bad experience at a local Chinese, ended up sending us to her favourite and had great meal.

Temple Gate billed itself as a "16th Century Convent" refurbished. There is actually very little of the actual convent that is part of the hotel, so I felt like it was a bit of false advertising. The room was just "okay," nothing special for the price. There was a big hubbub happening at the front desk when we arrived and they made us wait a very long time to check us in, because both people at the front desk were swept up in the hubbub, even though one person would have sufficed to handle it. Then, they got the price wrong. Our booking was to include breakfast and they had no record of that. I had to jump through hoops (i.e., find my original email with the booking agent who was no longer employed there) to prove my claim. Then when we checked out, they still managed to charge us for breakfast and we had to wait while they corrected our bill. The restaurant was nice enough, so no problem there. The location was fine - an easy walk to shops and restaurants. This was at the end of our trip, and coming from all the other wonderful accommodations in Ireland, this was a slight disappointment from what I was expecting. Of all the places we stayed, it's the one that I probably would not choose if we had to do it over again.
