“A Haven in West Cork”
Reviewed 12 February 2014

We stayed here at the end of June last summer as part of a short break to West Cork and Cape Clear. The inter connecting family room was just perfect as our boys are still quite young. They loved the idea of their own room with a dressing area separating it from the main room. The decor was country chic and really in keeping with the house. Carol was heading away early the next morning and Jim was "in charge" for breakfast. Breakfast was fabulous - scrambled eggs with smoked salmon and lovely homemade brown bread and the pancakes & maple syrup went down a treat with small boys. Jim was a wonderful host and very engaging - so much so that we missed the early ferry to Cape Clear with all the chat. Lis Ardagh is set on a height over Union Hall and has the most magnificent gardens. They are worth a visit in themselves. Overall a wonderful experience and a must for our next visit to West Cork.

Room Tip: Really great for families with small children.

You really couldn't ask for a better B&B. Clean, comfortable, spacious, excellent and friendly service. We needed to get out early and she had no problem getting up early to fix breakfast and it was an excellent breakfast as well. I was really impressed with every aspect.

Stayed here for a month while I worked and Carol and Jim treated me just like family. Carols meals are delicious, and her sense of humour keeps you laughing. The beds are also large and warm! They're just down the roadfrom Union Hall where you can get groceries at Centra or a pint at Maloneys. I recommend this place to anyone!

We have stayed at Lis-Ardagh Lodge for B & B and also in the self-catering houses many times over the years. It is always our first choice in the Union Hall/Skibbereen area for family and friends and we highly recommend it.

Carol and Jim are very friendly but they also allow us to come and go as we please and are always so helpful if we need anything. The B&B is spotlessly clean, the rooms are spacious and there are also two family suites consisting of two bedrooms and a bathroom - plenty of room for all so we don't feel crowded. The sound proofing is very good and there is a view of the sea in the distance.

Breakfast is a feast that goes down well with the men in my family. We can choose from a wide selection including Full Irish Breakfast, smoked salmon, scrambled eggs, pancakes, fruit, yoghurts, croissants and brown bread. I'm sure there's plenty more than these.

This year we rented one of the self-catering houses for two adults and three teenage boys, (including two students from France). The house was originally a garage, I think, but is two storey and very spacious. We had a large modern kitchen and a sitting room with television, sofa and armchairs. Upstairs were two large bedrooms, one for my husband and me, and the other for the three boys, with one on a camp bed. Plenty of room for all of us!

The garden is beautiful with different areas to sit or explore. It is thoughtfully designed and the new addition this year was something that Jim found when excavating with a mini-digger. He showed us the stone, standing as a sculpture in the garden, and asked what we could see on it. Immediately the eldest French brother said he saw the Virgin Mary. Jim then told us an amazing story of how the stone split in half when he dug it out of the ground and inside was the outline of a figure.

Lis-Ardagh Lodge is just outside Union Hall village and up a long, steep hill. You definitely need a car unless you are very fit. Union Hall is a fishing village on an inlet. It has pubs that serve lunch and dinner, a working harbour, an excellent coffee shop that has won awards, and a friendly Centra supermarket with a selection of interesting local produce. Other well known and loved West Cork villages, such as Glandore and Castletownshend, are close by. There are plenty of places to walk and a selection of small beaches. We keep a sailing boat at Reen, which is close to Union Hall, and you can also go kayaking or out on a boat trip to see whales and dolphins. Skibbereen is the nearest town with interesting craft shops and restaurants. Plenty to do, in other words.

Room Tip: Family rooms with two bedrooms and a bathroom are perfect if you have children with you.

Would certantly recomend this B&B.
Very nice location, spacious and nice rooms, lovely breakfast and very friendly and helpful hosts: the best B&B we have been to since we married 8 years ago. The village, Union Hall is a typical Irish village where very little has changed since th first time I went there 33 years ago, a fisherman's village with nice beaches and places to do rock climbing for children: longstrand, island house...

Room Tip: We slept in the room named: Elm

We highly recommend Lis-Ardagh.
The rooms are very lovely and comfortable, the breakfast is delicious, and the garden is gorgeous. The surroundings are really nice (Union Hall, Glandore). But this is nothing compared to Carol and Jim’s warm and wonderful welcome. They make this place really fantastic.
We’d go back to Ireland just to stay in this B and B again

My husband, Steve Fleming, gave a wonderful review that I completely agree with. Carol & Jim were delightful and very inclusive, which made our time (5 nights) at Lis-Ardagh that much more enjoyable. The grounds are incredible with shrubs & trees not normally seen in Irish gardens (I'm a landscape fanatic); their hospitality was truly gracious; the accommodations in the self-catering apartment are spacious, well-stocked, and inviting. Any problems were dealt with immediately. We will definitely revisit Lis-Ardagh and Jim & Carol to be sure when we're again in west Co. Cork.

Room Tip: We didn't stay in the B&B portion of Lis-Ardagh and so we cannot comment on any of the rooms...
