“Better than Blarney...”
Reviewed 28 July 2011

Skip the lines and hoopla to tour this FREE castle between Waterford and Cobh. It is off the beaten path, but a gem. The day we arrived, we had a personal tour by an archeaologist/OPW employee. He was very knowledgeable and friendly. The grounds are beautiful with a knot garden within the walls. While the renovation hasn't been completed, what is done is wonderful. Barryscourt is part of the OPW Heritage Site program, which I highly recommend buying a pass if you are touring the country with time in Dublin. It's a great money saver on other sites. We also toured Ross Castle in Killarney and the two presentations gave us a wonderful insight into castle life.

“A must for the history enthusiast”
Reviewed 8 July 2011

This tower house is located about 10km from Cork or Cobh, off the N25, near Carrigtwohill. It is well restored and furnished to the original 16th century design, including the herb garden. A lovely and very instructive experience. We had a great guide (Robin) obviously in love with his job and consequently a source of much information and lore.
As the castle can only be viewed by guided tour, it is recommendable to call ahead (+353 21 488 2218) to enquire for the tour schedules.

“hidden gem”
Reviewed 11 September 2010

Siobhan, our tour guide, was wonderful. The castle is well worth seeing, but lots of stairs and a few narrow staircases, so not everyone would be able to see all levels. Loved the adjacent tea house and the orchard and rose garden. If you are in the area, by all means stop in.

“Great FREE day out”
Reviewed 16 June 2010

The castle is just outside Carrigtwohill off the main Cork to Waterford road. The OPW run it. They give a free guided tour roughly every hour but you wont be waiting that long. There is a lovely coffee shop in front of the castle which is a nice place to have a cuppa and wait. There are a lot of steps so it is not suitable for buggys, wheelchairs or anyone who may have trouble with steps. They have done great restoration work. It has a small dungeon. There is a lovely orchard out the back of the castle where you can go and sit afterwards should the mood take you. The toilet facilities are excellent, very clean.
