Excellent hotel for a stay in Cork - food excellent, staff excellent and reasonably priced
The hotel is situated close to the main roads for travel in and around the city , but set in a lovely country location

We had a lovely 2 day break in the Maryborough, it is set in nice grounds and the initial view of the hotel when you arrive is old country house as per the web photos. The staff we encountered at reception and particularly in the newly renovated bar area could not be more helpful and engaging. We expected it to be olde worlde but the majority of the hotel is actually new and modern, it is very chic and well designed but if you are expecting to feel like lord and lady of the manor, this is not the place! However having said that, it is a lovely hotel and we were upgraded to a spa room which was very restful and relaxing, low lights, lovely bathroom etc. The breakfast was a banquet and the restaurant food is very high quality with a good balanced menu. Our expectation was a country house hotel so that is why we didn't give it 5 stars - but it is a very good hotel with great staff and we would recommend it.

Room Tip: We had a spa room which is in a wing of the hotel and a very quiet location and the rooms are modern...

Dear CSTEire,

Thank you for taking the time to recommend The Maryborough and share the details of your recent stay with us. It is nice to hear that you had a lovely visit and enjoyed the hotel grounds. And what a great compliment to our staff. I will pass your feedback along to our reception and restaurant teams. We're glad you were able to relax in the spa room and have a lovely dining experience in Bellini's. We are so sorry to hear not all of your expectations were met. We do have modern components to our hotel. As you mentioned, our restaurant and bar were recently remodeled, and our spa and club facilities are state of the art. In the Old House, which was built in 1710, we do also have 5 suites along with reception and a banquet room. We would love for you to visit again and possibly stay in one of the suites, which might have more of a country house feel. Thank you again for your review, and we hope to welcome you back in the near future.

Kind Regards,
Kristin L

We recently stayed at the Maryborough and our experience was disappointing. On arrival our room wasn’t ready, no surprises as it was before the 2pm check-in. We left our bags with reception and went for lunch in the Bellini bar. I ordered Welsh Rarebit, however when our order came out I was given a Ploughmans. The waiter was very apologetic and took it away to correct it, by the time my correct lunch had arrived my husband had finished his. When we asked for the bill we had incorrectly been charged for scones, there was a lot of confusion, however we were finally given the correct bill.

We went back to reception just after 2pm and were told that our room still wasn’t ready, we were asked to take a seat whilst the staff ran about in a mad panic to find us a room that had been cleaned. We were eventually given a room which, to call it substandard would be a compliment. The room cost 130 Euros per night and wasn’t worth half the money. The walls had holes and cracks, the ‘double’ bed was in fact two singles pushed together, the room looked out onto a flat roof, it was over the men’s toilets which meant that we hardly slept due to the hand dryer going every 10 minutes or so until 3am due to an event taking place on the Friday and Saturday night. The TV was like something from the 1970’s, not something you would expect in a 4* hotel and there was no air conditioning meaning the room was extremely stuffy at night (we couldn't open the window due to the noise from the events taking place).
We ate in Bellini’s restaurant the first night, my advice is that you don’t bother. The food was overpriced and the portions were paltry. I ordered a mushroom risotto, expecting a filling steaming bowl of rice, what I actually got was three small patties with a bit of shaved courgette on the top, it would have barely past for a starter and failed miserably as a main. For the pleasure of the nonexistent food we were charged a fortune.
Staff attitude left a lot to be desired and we received cool, off-hand behaviour from more than one staff member. We had asked to use the guest laptop but were told that it had been sent away for repair. When I asked if there was a computer in the office we could use, I was told it wasn’t possible in case we caused an infection – nice customer service! I would have raised this when we were there but on check out we weren't even asked if we'd enjoyed our stay.
To sum up, the Maryborough is overpriced, not a 4*, snobby staff who haven’t a clue what they are doing. The rooms are tatty and dated. I feel as though we have been robbed, having paid a fortune for a mediocre weekend. We won’t be returning to the Maryborough.

Room Tip: Go to a different hotel

We had an excellent room with a balcony, and we experienced top class service in every way! We attended a function at which the food and the ambience were both excellent. We shall look forward to seeing the renovated lounge area.

Room Tip: Rooms with a garden view are excellent
