“Very Central & nice views over the river”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 October 2013

Centrally located and had space for a booking with less than 24 hours notice despite there being a big social event and Cabaret in town. Room was a decent size and the bathroom had a 1/2 bath with shower over. Great wifi reception all over the hotel - thanks for that. Breakfast is probably the best buffet breakfast I've had in two years at various hotels a around Ireland

Room was average, but comfortable. Bath was extremely difficult to get in and out of as it was very high off the floor. I would say this would be downright dangerous for some. Hotel is very well located in towne center. Convenient to shopping, pubs and restaurants.

Stayed 19th October as part of 17 person hen party. Rooms were much better than expected but the heat was unbearable. I turned radiator off & opened the window but it didn't make a lot of difference. Bed was comfortable but the pillows were too high & hard for my personal liking. Dinner was included in our package - starter and main course were very nice but dessert (medley consisting of carrot cake, apple tart & profiterole) wasn't great. Tea and coffee were to have been included but we had to ask for it 25 mins or so after finishing our meal. I found one of the ladies that dealt with us during dinner to be very brusque, albeit efficient . The hotel was very busy and there was lots of entertainment for guests - there were 2 different bands playing in bar. 1st band played 10.00 - 12.30 & 2nd band 12.30 - 3.00. There was also a County & Western function in the Banqueting Suite. I found breakfast to be tasty but very limited choice - only tinned grapefruit & 1 common bowl of yogurt and only brown bread or toast as a choice of bread.

We arrived to Donegal and randomly booked this place. They had special offer on B&B for EUR 79 that night.

Lady at desk was very nice, even gave us room with better view when we asked for it. Hotel was busy and very well located. After entering the room we were shocked with the heat in our room. I turned off radiator immediately and tried to open window, but unfortunately for security reason u could only open it very little. We left the room and went for dinner down town. When we came back the heat was even worse. We asked in reception to turn it of, but the room was still very warm till next day.

Bed was very uncomfortable. I went to sleep around 12 and at 2.00am i wished its breakfast time. Was like that till morning.

We enjoyed the bar with live music that night. Good few people in too.

In the morning we went for breakfast. The girl had obviously bad morning (not my fault). She was very cranky about where we going to seat. Want nice at all. Couldn't believe how she just threw coffee in front of me without saying a word, acting like what favor she is doing to me to.
Found it very rude!

Not a big selection of food for breakfast. We have got an Irish breakfast. Would prefer some different bread, or jam.

Overall it was just one night on the way to Slieve League and we enjoyed Donegal. But wouldn't like to stay for much longer.

I run tours to Ireland once a year. We booked our tour group of 20 into the Abbey Hotel six months in advance. Weeks before the trip, our group was bumped with the management stating they over-booked and there was a big music festival in town that would overcrowd the town anyway (like we'd hate being in town during a music festival). WE were rebooked into the Nesbitt Arms Hotel in Ardara.

I later found out that the owner of the Abbey Hotel also owns the Nesbitt Arms. We were scheduled for 3 nights at the Abbey (the longest stay in any one hotel for our 10 day tour). We had excursions planned having the Abbey in Donegal as a home base. The stay in Ardara added several hours to our travel time over these days because of the additional distance. It was most inconvenient. While the Nesbitt Arms in Ardara is a nice country hotel, it is no match in value for the Abbey Hotel in the heart of Donegal town, and my tour group had a pre-payed price for the land portion of our tour that cited 3 night at the Abbey Hotel in the heart of one of Ireland's most beloved towns.

On one of the 3 excursion days, we stopped in Donegal town and did not notice a music festival or even a significant crowd anywhere in town. The Abbey Hotel itself didn't have an especially active lobby. None of the shops knew of a music festival. Being bumped was bad enough, but being bumped to another of the owner's hotels which was of less value for apparently no good reason stunk.

The Abbey did provide a free dinner and drink for my tour group at the Nesbitt Arms. That dinner gave my group three choices of a set menu - a fish cake, a vegetarian plate or a piece of chicken with rice. While it was an adequate dinner, it ranked last of all our tour dinners. I liken the dinner to one you might get at Denny's in America. Nice enough but more in line with a cafeteria than a hotel restaurant.

It's a shame that an innocent little American tour group gets the bait and switch like this. Shame on the Abbey Hotel and its owner.

After a long day touring we were looking forward to our stay but alas, this place was over priced and needed to be shined up a bit. Breakfast was, well not the best. Dated rooms and we could hear snoring in the next room.

we arrived in Donegal town late morning and enquired at reception about vacancies and tar ifs.
After considering their two night offer we decided to stay. I was not disapointed. The staff at reception were helpful and cheerful and were very busy. Breakfast was good but a wider selection would have been more apropiate considering the numerous nationalities staying there. The room was largeand comfortable and overlooked the Diamond which was busy with buses and coaches that could be quite noisy.

Room Tip: Rooms are available overlooking the river at the rear of the hotel. This is quieter than the front o...
