The Abbey Hotel
Ranked #6 of 7 Hotels in Donegal Town
Reviewed 3 August 2014

This hotel is in the centre of Donegal town diamond area which makes it ideal for a stay in Donegal. The hotel has a large bar and several places to eat. The hotel says it has free parking but be aware this parking is in a large public car park near the quay, the hotel does give you a voucher for it. The rooms are fine, a bit old fashioned but good for a night stay. They are very clean and have all the things you would need. A small criticism would be that there are no individual toiletries, just a large bottle of soap. I would stay here again if I was in Donegal as the hotel is in the same square as the restaurants, bars and cafés.

Room Tip: A room that does NOT face on to the square.

We were attending an Irish dancing Feis in Donegal town and stayed for 1 night at the Abbey Hotel. First impressions, staff were lovely. Nice hotel. Room was good size, dated but perfectly adequate.
It all went downhill that night. My mother, daughter (aged 8) and I went to bed at 10.15pm as we were to be up early the next morning.
From 12am-4am there was what can only be described as a festival party going on outside the hotel on hotel grounds. When the night porter was called by us to ask the people to be quiet, move inside, we were told that there was nothing they could do. He offered to move us, but at this point it was 1am, didn't fancy walking down hotel corridors in the PJs.....

The next morning when we went down for breakfast (which was very good and included in price) my mother complained at the front desk. When we went to check out the very nice girl on duty checked with the manager and the room charged was comped, which was proper order as we literally had no sleep. Unfortunately they debited EUR50 from my card which I have yet to get reimbursed 4 weeks later, despite 2 emails and a phone call.
Very disappointing. I would not go back and recommend that anyone going to Donegal that wants sleep should think twice about this hotel.
Very disappointed with their customer service despite assurances that my card would be credited, as is only fair due to no sleep :(

Room Tip: Do not go if you want sleep!

Abbey Hotel is a good sized hotel with good amenities- they bill themselves as an entertainment destination so there is music in the bar downstairs every night. We were traveling as a family and it is hard to find rooms big enough for two adults and three kids. The Abbey had the best room we had the whole trip- a long room with a double bed and three singles! It's rare to see something like that.

The staff at the hotel were fine and quickly helped when we ran out of soap.

The one thing to mention is that the two nights we stayed there the hotel hosted some high school events and it was incredibly noisy on the Diamond in Donegal town (the main square). The noise did not abate until 4 or 5 in the morning, both nights. It was extremely loud yelling and talking and laughing, with frequent cursing (which i was not thrilled about given we were traveling with young children).

I asked the clerk as I checked out about it- i noted that I was surprised the police didn't come and break it up-- it was insanely loud until very late hours. She said "ah, the police are there but they do nothing" I asked if there are quieter rooms- she said the rooms in the back have noise from the disco. She said there are some interior rooms that are quieter.

I would advise anyone traveling to Donegal to not stay in Donegal town itself. I would recommend staying out in the country, perhaps along the road to Glencoulombkille. Donegal is GORGEOUS and scenic. In a four week trip to Ireland, this is the only accommodation I regret. If I had to do it over again I would NOT stay in town due to this insane level of noise, but rather out in the country.

Again, Abbey Hotel was fine- it's the in-town location that is a concern. If the Abbey and other hotels wanted to, I am sure they could work with the local authorities to contain this noise and make it more palatable for guests to stay in town.

Overall, very nice place to stay. Busy with lots of tour groups and buses…lobby can be hectic. Facilities a bit worn but comfortable (remember, this is Donegal Town…not Dublin). Very accommodating staff. I arrived a bit grumpy and after checking in to hotel and getting in to room had to return to front desk with a list of needed items. They got them all together and soothed my frayed nerves. It was unusually warm, we asked for a fan (no AC), and they produced one (I think they took it out of their office!). We stayed 3 nights and 2 of the nights there were high school proms in their club...big crowds of young people. But it was quiet as a church in our 4th floor room. BTW…we typically decline help with our bags and we did in this case…but if you're on the 4th floor and they ask if you need help with bags…say "Yes!" Elevator only goes to 3rd, then stairs to the 4th. Apparently, wash cloths in the rooms are not standard issue..our room was without and it wasn't a mistake…but they rounded some up on our request. We stayed in Ireland about 3 weeks in several different places, including 4-star hotels…this place had the most comfortable beds we found! Buffet breakfast was good but lacking in variety.

Just re-read the above and it sounds negative, but overall it's a nice place to stay, a good value, and we would stay there again.

Very very nice hotel.
Food was good but a bit limited, we were there 4 nights and every night there was mashed potato served, the last night we actually asked for a different potato choice which they did.
Rooms were very big really nice and comfortable. We would definitely stay there again.
