This day tour was well organized, comfortable and we managed to learn a lot from our tour guide and from the activities themselves. Good price and good service. I recommend it!
The tour leaves Dublin at 9 and you're back at 3 pm. You visit Newgrange and the Hill of Tara, both important sites in Irish history.

I'd thought Mary's narration as we drove would focus more on early Irish history (or rather prehistory), but she covered everything from the Neolithic to the Troubles, often in response to questions that people called out. Her depth of knowledge was amazing.

Note that the Hill of Tara is really just a photo stop (it's a grassy hill with mounds and ditches and an amazing view, even on a drizzly day), and Mary doesn't accompany you onto to the hill, so do stop and read the signs and map at the entrance so that you know the significance of each of the mounds and ditches.

At Newgrange, you have ample time to have some lunch (the cafe on site is a little expensive, but the soup and bread were very good) before you meet the buses to take you to the site and your archaeologist guide, who does take you into the passage tomb. Older than Stonehenge, this Neolithic site is impressive for its abstract rock carvings and stonework – the tomb itself is watertight, and we had a good demonstration of this as we had no idea until we exited that it had started to pour rain while we were in the tomb! We then had time to visit the exhibition before meeting the buses and returning to Dublin, arriving back right on time.

(FYI, her bus had WiFi, which I appreciated as it was the only tour bus of our entire trip that did!)

We took the tour of Tara and Newgrange and we were delighted with Mary's insightful commentary. The trip was amazing and during our return to Dublin we were treated to a primer on the political climate over the century. Very interesting!

Day tour to Newgrange and Tara was very professionally run. Our guide had with a wealth of knowledge and passed it on very clearly. Newgrange was spectacular. The Hill of Tara was a bit of an anticlimax after Newgrange.

This is a must-do tour to Newgrange (officially Brú na Bóinne) and the Hills of Tara et al. We needed a tour to get there since we hadn't rented a car - but even if we had a car, going with Mary was great because she has special access to drive right up to the front door (so to speak) of Newgrange and has preset times to be taken inside the mound.

Without a tour - visitors would have to funnel through the visitor center which is located somewhere else, and I don't know how the access would work - entrance in the mound is limited to 20 or so at a time and must be escorted, and I'd say each group takes 20-30 minutes.

Logistics were easy - Mary has 3 pickup locations between near St Stephens Green up to the Post Office at preset times so there's no confusion. Also I liked that she was cash-only and collected at time of the tour - so simple. Just call ahead to reserve a seat (we called night before and happily she had room.). Tour price includes entry fee to Newgrange (I don't think Tara has a fee). Bus is perfectly comfortable. Lunch stop at a farm near Newgrange; if we were driving we wouldn't have recognized it as a lunch place but food was fine and simple (sandwiches, soup, etc) and inexpensive. It was great because there didn't appear to be much else in the immediate area.

And the there's the tour content. As mentioned Mary is awesome - a wealth of knowledge of history and context. Very engaging to listen to, whether you know a lot or a little. Everything that was asked - she was able to provide interesting relevant details.

Due to some road issues we made an unplanned stop at Dowth - bonus! Although Dowth is not excavated so it looks much like any other hill which if course makes one wonder about all the other hills... Nonetheless it was a Dowth so super cool.

And Newgrange and Tara were as mysterious and wonderful as hoped - I won't dwell on them since you're likely already trying to get there.

Final word - GO WITH MARY!! She delivers a great day trip. So happy we went.

Thank Don D
