The Newgrange site was unknown to me prior to a friend telling me it was something you can not see in the US and it was. Our day trip to Newgrange was a adventure in history and a unique site. How many times can you enter a site about as old as the Pyramids.

Anyhow it was sunny and that combined with a great tour guide, Joe made for another nice day in Ireland.

Thank Joe H

This is the must-do tour! From the time you get on the bus, to the time you are through, interesting facts and history, delivered with fun facts and humor keep you intrigued all day! I wouldn't recommend seeing these sacred sites without this tour, or visiting Dublin for that matter, as the tour was also filled with other tips and activities for all interests. What a great day with this tour!! Book early--it fills up all the time!

This day tour was well organized, comfortable and we managed to learn a lot from our tour guide and from the activities themselves. Good price and good service. I recommend it!
The tour leaves Dublin at 9 and you're back at 3 pm. You visit Newgrange and the Hill of Tara, both important sites in Irish history.

I'd thought Mary's narration as we drove would focus more on early Irish history (or rather prehistory), but she covered everything from the Neolithic to the Troubles, often in response to questions that people called out. Her depth of knowledge was amazing.

Note that the Hill of Tara is really just a photo stop (it's a grassy hill with mounds and ditches and an amazing view, even on a drizzly day), and Mary doesn't accompany you onto to the hill, so do stop and read the signs and map at the entrance so that you know the significance of each of the mounds and ditches.

At Newgrange, you have ample time to have some lunch (the cafe on site is a little expensive, but the soup and bread were very good) before you meet the buses to take you to the site and your archaeologist guide, who does take you into the passage tomb. Older than Stonehenge, this Neolithic site is impressive for its abstract rock carvings and stonework – the tomb itself is watertight, and we had a good demonstration of this as we had no idea until we exited that it had started to pour rain while we were in the tomb! We then had time to visit the exhibition before meeting the buses and returning to Dublin, arriving back right on time.

(FYI, her bus had WiFi, which I appreciated as it was the only tour bus of our entire trip that did!)

We took the tour of Tara and Newgrange and we were delighted with Mary's insightful commentary. The trip was amazing and during our return to Dublin we were treated to a primer on the political climate over the century. Very interesting!
