“DAX - Fabulous Food, Wonderfully Attentive Staff, Calm, Relaxing...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2014

First time to Dax and I was pleasantly surprised. This understated hidden gem just off Fitzwilliams Square has been added to my top 10 restaurants in Dublin. The staff are very pleasant and attentive. I never had to ask for my wine glass to be topped up (something that not even Patrick Guilbaud could mange).

The atmosphere is calm and attentive and the restaurant is nicely lit. You have to wonder about the restaurants that feel its chic to have you eating in the dark!!. Bread was freshly baked and extremely tasty. The starters wonderfully presented. I had a scallops and fennel started that was cooked to perfection. This was followed by Lamb. Lamb should always be served pink (even rare) but most people are not made aware of this beforehand. What impressed me was that the waiter, without been condescending ,informed me that this was how the lamb would be served , thus giving the me a chance to change my mind beforehand.
The Lamb was absolutely delicious... cant say more than that..
I did not have room for desert , but did spy a few on the way out to out tables. They looked delicious .... maybe next time.
Add this restaurant to your list of special restaurants - It was a lovely treat and I will be back.
Best meal I have had out in months.

“Excellent food, great service, pleasant surroundings...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 17 August 2014

"DAX" was one of those places we had heard about for years and had many times threatened to visit, but somehow we never got there (apparently they're 10 years in operation) - until now. For us, it turned out to be a very good experience.

This impressive restaurant is located at the Leeson Street end of Pembroke Street, and you shouldn't be put-off by the fact it's at basement level. Our welcome was professional, we were ushered to a table which seemed good to us, and our only initial disappointment was to be told that the quail Starter was no longer available - personally, that left my choices quite limited!

Anyway, we opted for Beef Carpaccio & Asparagus / Lobster Mayonnaise Starters, and for Mains we picked Lamb and Duck Breast dishes. The winelist is heavily "Old World", and our choices were a Rias Baixas + a half-bottle of St. Emilion for my "Better Half", M.

The food was definitely excellent - perhaps the Beef Carpaccio was a little bit too "melt in the mouth" ? - but you couldn't dispute the quality of both Mains. By the way, we don't like to be rushed, (and fear Chefs who prematurely cook dishes) but the long gap between Starters and Mains was very noticeable. Presentation of each dish was a major PLUS, as was the flavour of the various elements of the Lamb dish.

My "Better Half" M, managed to cope with ordering a Dessert - Strawberry Panacotta - deemed "really lovely", surely a positive comment from someone who's usually very critical ?

Oh, and did we mention, service throughout our meal - led by the very personable Alain (or Alan?) was very good too. Our Bill was by no means modest, but for what we actually got, it was reasonable. We hope to come back here again!
