Hi Ollie, this is for you! And many thanks for the CD!
Ollie has an enchanting air about him that almost hypnotises the audience - when he spoke and sang - we listened....intently!
The stories of the fairies and the folklore were funny, entertaining and really interesting and we learnt a thing or two about where certain sayings come from! The songs were lovely, lively and beautiful and the audience participation being a must made the whole experience wonderful.
Please take the time to find the Brazen Head and book in for an evening. The food was also very good with excellent service and a great opportunity to meet others from around the world. Definite recommendation!!!
Thanks Ollie, very much!
The storyteller made for a fascinating night of Ireland's history and stories. He kept his audience on the edge of their seats with stories of Fairies, Folklore and a wee bit of history of the people of Ireland through the ages. The audience participating in the folk songs portion was fun, also. The meals were of traditional Irish fair and delicious. My wife and I had a very enjoyable experience!
Did this evening tonight (Easter Sunday). Underwhelming in every aspect. Unfortunately we were positioned poorly in the middle of 2 families with children either side of us. The storyteller ( unmemorable but couldn't find his name or picture on the listing of Irish storytellers to offer it) was very repetitive and told the story twice ( explaining the words then singing the words?). With two 20 minute stories and 20 minutes of singalong ( he was solo with a guitar) between a lightening paced eating menu of 3 courses ( food pretty good actually) it was just an average night. At €48 per person plus drinks it was an expensive disappointing evening. Enjoyment seems to be contingent on storyteller and seating placement and both poorly lacking tonight.
Thank you for your review of our show of the 16th of April. I am glad that you were very happy with the meal. I wish to address some of the other points you mention.
We take food and drink orders from 6:30 pm, the show starts at 7pm and ends at approximately 9:45pm - we do try and leave adequate time for the serving of the meal. We seat people informally on tables to encourage relaxed interaction - the vast majority of our guests enjoy this and they say that it adds to the experience.
I checked the timings of the show on the night you were there, the first two performance- sessions lasted 25 minutes each – the third session was slightly longer.
Some of the songs on the night were in the form of stories involving issues of land ownership and marriage in 19th century Ireland – we believe some background information is essential and most of our guests who respond to us appreciate such information, as they would not be familiar with the details.
We have four highly experienced presenters and whilst the content of the show may vary slightly, the format is essentially the same each night. All of our presenters receive extremely positive reviews as can be evidenced on this and other sites.
It is unfortunate the evening did not meet all of your expectations but we hope you enjoy the rest of your time in Ireland.
If you get a chance, you must stop by the Brazen Head pub. Philip the storyteller is awesome !! The whole room was silent listening to his stories! The food was great and the service excellent. You will not regret it ! A fun time was had by all !!!
Great night of storytelling, music, and food. The stories were touching. The history of Ireland is tragic but beautiful. Our storyteller Michael is passionate about his work. It is much more then a job and we are better off as Irish Americans for the time spent. In a world of screens the spoken story carries much weight and gives us a unique feeling and connection with the storyteller making it very special.
We went on tours around Ireland as a family and had a wonderful time. On the last evening, we went to the Evening of Food, Folklore and Fairies. It was great fun for all ages and left me wanting to visit again and learn more. This was already of top rated event and the evenings we were available were fully booked online, but my husband called them directly and we were able to get a reservation. So worth it and I would love to go again! Even our teenager enjoyed it and teens are hard to please on family vacations.
