“Great location, great staff”
Reviewed 27 August 2014

Stayed here on a Monday night. The staff were beyond compare-friendly, attentive and even supplied us with an umbrella. Hotel bar was quiet and reasonably priced. Room was modern and spacious. Couple of downsides are the lack of reasonably priced parking which, in fairness, is characteristic of many city centre hotel. Its also quite noisy by night. Finally, the wifi is very hit and miss. I would stay again but only if travelling to Dublin by train.

Thanks for your review of The Clarence having stayed with us this week. It's a great opening line to read such high praise for our staff, and your positive comments about the hotel itself. We take on board your comments about parking and noise, and your acknowledgement of this being a characteristic of the city centre. The issue you experienced was rectified during the week. Hopefully this didn't impact on your stay too much, and we look forward to any future stay you may have at The Clarence.

This was a 2 day trip and we were recommended to try the Clarence. On arrival, we were greeted and taken to the room in a lift which has seen far better days.

The room was shocking. Stained carpets, very noisy, very warm (A/C broke). It looked very very dated. We would have had a better presented room in a Travelodge for a fraction of the cost.

The bathroom really was disappointing. Mouldy grout, flaking wood and a sink basin that didn't drain. The shower head was filthy too

We asked if there were any rooms to upgrade to (due to these problems), they said No, but someone would have a look at the sink. Throughout the whole stay, no one bothered to attend to this issue.

The noise at night from the city is loud, be warned. If you want a peaceful night, don't stay here

I can't say anything positive about this experience. What's more, it wasn't cheap either. We did complain about the issues mentioned, but the staff didn't take us seriously.

I hope the Management can take something from this review and do something for the better.

I'm am most disappointed to read of your unsatisfactory experience here at The Clarence when you stayed with us and it is very much regrettable that such issues were not dealt with during your stay. Certainly, where possible, matters should have been rectified and you have our sincere apologies if you felt the issues you notified us of were not taken seriously.

We are currently replacing numerous showerheads, several carpets and restoring woodwork. Noting that your review says you stayed with us in May, I would be grateful if you could email the hotel (info@theclarence.ie) for the attention of the Operations Manager letting them know your room number if you recall and the dates of your stay so the issues can be further looked into and to make sure this room is given priority.

We certainly take your feedback on board and the points made in your review will be addressed.

Booked into Clarence for a bit of luxury and location . Location was perfect but hotel was hmmm. Really needs a coat of paint. Our room overlooked the extractor fan from the BBQ restaurant next door so our choice was to sweat or stink of BBQ . BBQ was our choice so I had to eat there. First impressions last and they really need to take one the 4 staff in reception and give them a paintbrush. The Clarence shouldn't be living off its reputation anymore. Step up and sort this out. And yes I will come back as a critic free of charge if they wish.

Room Tip: I had a choice to open windows and listen to the nightclub below or a snorer. If you see extractor f...

It's a disappointing to read you did not enjoy your recent stay at The Clarence. With regard to painting, this is an ongoing job all year round at the hotel so rooms and public areas are frequently attended to. It's a pity see that it is not to the standard you expected and we will look into a more frequent tending to. We work with the neighbouring businesses to try minimise any impact they may have on hotel guests so your feedback regarding the BBQ and noise will be mentioned to them in order to try further reduce the potential for this.

As a highly touted boutique hotel, I was expecting a lot more from the Clarence. Location is fantastic, as it is 2 short blocks from Temple Bar and has lots of restaurants close by as well. That is about all the good I can really say. The Octagon Bar is really quiet and understated. It not very attractive and lacks any kind of character. My room was on the top floor (507) and had a nice of the river. Again, the rooms were understated and lacked any real character. The really disappointing part was the lack of AC. There is a unit on the wall and looks like it should work, but it doesn't. The windows do work, but unfortunately, there is an outdoor bar directly below that is open until 3:00am and a BBQ restaurant beside that, so they are running the smoker 7/24. That means you can't open the window. They do supply you a fan, but really that is no use. So not sure my room got below 25c. Finally had to have them move me after 3 of 5 nights. Not sure how the new room will be, as I am out golfing for the day and they will move me while I am out.

It's unfortunate that you did not enjoy the decor and room originally assigned to you. We are currently looking at ways to improve the negative aspects you experienced or were disappointed by. With regard to the AC situation, we currently do not have AC in the hotel but again this is something we are engaged in a feasibility study of. We hope that the remainder of your stay was enjoyable here at The Clarence and the room to which you were upgraded during your stay was more than satisfactory.

Very much enjoyed this hotel in the heart of temple bar. The staff was super friendly and the rooms are amazing. Simple but beautifully decorated of the highest quality.

We only were there for one night but hope to get back there. The breakfast was a ltitle messy, took too long but great quality.

The people at the front desk were outstanding .......

Room Tip: rooms on 4th floor have a little balcony

I'm not one to write a review normally but unfortunatly we didn't have a great stay at the Clarence. Our room was at the back of the hotel which was directly over a nightclub which had a large outdoor area that was extremely busy. The music and noise didn't stop until 3 and there was a very noisy air conditioning extractor right outside the window which was like a drill for the night. Not a wink of sleep unfortunatly .Contacted reception and we were given ear plugs. Surely there could be sound proofing windows available these days! It was a shame because the staff were excellent and couldn't have been friendlier. Sorry for the poor review :-(

Thanks for your review of The Clarence. It is unfortunate that you experienced disruption during your stay with us from noise emanating from a neighbouring business. We are looking at ways to minimise such disturbances but being located in a thriving nightlife district means we are unable to currently block it all out. Despite the impact of this on your stay I'm happy to read that you found our team to be both excellent and friendly and your kind words are very much appreciated.

We stayed here for 2 nights in August 2014, in a deluxe balcony room, 412. The entrance / foyer area is decorated in oak panels and could look a little austere to some visitors although we liked it a lot. On entering the hotel, we were greeted in a very friendly and welcoming way though sadly the room wasn't ready, so we dropped bags and headed into town for breakfast. (Check out Bewleys, it's a fine breakfast spot). When we managed to check in at 14:00, we found the room was situated to the rear of the property, overlooking the rooftops of temple bar. Not a traditionally "good view", but it had lots of interest and we thought it was cool. Whilst not the biggest room we've ever stayed in, it was well furnished and nicely maintained. The bathroom was a good size, and in good order, so nothing to moan about here.
The main room, had tea and coffee making, smallish TV, minibar, and a couple of tub seats with a table. There was plenty of hanging space in the wardrobes. The bed was Queen size and very comfortable. Again, nothing to complain about.
As for the services at the hotel, we found it a bit of a mixed bag. We popped down for coffee on the first morning and it took a while to get served. The coffee itself was nice but the waitress could do to smile a little and seemed surprised when we complimented her on the coffee!
Reception staff is a tale of 2 halves. One gentleman, was really on the ball, eager to help, and keen to sort out anything you might wish for - exactly what you need when you're in a new city. The other struggled to understand what we were asking, and couldn't offer much in the way of advice with some pretty straightforward questions.
The hotel, as has been mentioned is on the banks of the Liffey. It's also about 15 minutes walk from most places in the very middle of town. So brewery / distillery / shopping / culture is all very close to hand. The impressive nightlife of Temple Bar starts about 150m from the back door. There are clubs and bars practically joined to the hotel in the basements below. With doors and windows closed, we didn't find noise to be a problem in our room, but we were on a high floor. And just be aware that the nightlife goes on till way after 2am.
So why only 4 stars? Well we tried to get into Cleavers (The hotel restaurant) a bit late in the day, but still during posted opening hrs. Staff tell us we're too late and the chef had turned the stove off. So we ask the same staff, can they recommend a place? Nope, they don't eat out round here. OK, so anywhere to avoid? Same answer. Try the main desk, they tell us. Go to main desk. Same questions, same answers from staff. This is at just before 10:30pm on a Friday night.
The saving grace on this is that we went back to the room, ordered room service. The Chowder and Tandoori Wraps were outstanding. Service was pretty quick too.

Thanks for your comprehensive review following your recent stay. I certainly seems like you had a mixed experience staying here at The Clarence, but it's great to read of the positives. Where you experienced anything less than the standard we have been able to pride ourselves on goes to show us that there is always room for improvement and thanks to your specifics it makes that a task we can undertake in those areas straight away. Your kind words about the food, speed of service, and friendly staff have been passed on to the relevant departments as it's always nice to hear such things. Hopefully, if you come back to The Clarence, you will experience all positives.
