“Our Great Honeymoon”
Reviewed 26 February 2009

We've just returned from the Clarence for our Honeymoon, it was a fantastic experience. Although, as you'll see in other reviews, the rooms are a wee bit smaller than you might expect. It is made up for by the fact that they are clean, comfortable and very nicely decorated. The tea room restaurant does a fantastic breakfast and the dinner service was very good, with an excellent wine list.

It is the ideal location to base your self in Dublin for a few days, if you want a very good quality hotel that is welcoming, uncomplicated and stylish.

I would highly recommend it for young couples, although from the other clientele when we were there it is obviously a very popular place for the business community also.

Just back from an overnight in the Clarence....The staff were excellent but our 'Superior' room was crap..Size wise it was ok but the bathroom was awful. The tiles were absolutely filthy looking and had a really grubby looking bath. The hotel itself is more like a bank and the Bar lacks any character again the only saving grace was the lovely bar staff..i wouldnt be rushing back to stay here

Stayed here in Jan 08 and could not recommend it enough. The staff were excellent, frindly and very helpful. Room was of the highest standard and excellent value for money! We ventured to the Octagon bar for a beer and the service and amosphere were superb. If you are after excellent value and a classy setting then this is the place for you!

Back a week now from Dublin where we stayed at the Clarence. We were discussing it with friends last night, who are from the city. They agree that this is a hotel which trades on the fact that a few of the members of U2 have invested some capital in it. Firstly it is hard to know what the hotel aims to achieve, is it: a) a slightly faded two star with a back entrance onto a grotty alleyway; or b) somehow pretending to be arty, as the miniature sculpture in the lobby attempt to indicate.

Either way it fails, even on the two star count, as it doesn't even ascribe to basic hygiene standards. I will not go in to minute detail here, suffice to mention my glass at the bar was smeared with lipstick, my fiancée found the ladies' bathroom to be disgusting and could not find a clean cubicle so had to return to the bedroom. The bedroom - a bit of a disaster. I stayed in a larger, more luxurious room in Tito's Yugoslavia when I was a student. Not to mention I was on a twentieth of the budget.

I hope not to exaggerate here, but the Clarence has absolutely nothing going for it, other than the fact it's a ten to fifteen minute walk to the nicer side of the city centre. Where many hotels abound - which standardise their quality to their price.

  • Liked — Not a lot
  • Disliked — The unhelpful staff, who took their time in removing a pigeon who had flown into the bedroom. Their attitude seemed to suggest that it was our fault for leaving the window ajar.

This hotel is touted as a deluxe historic hotel, and being a big U2 fan, my husband insisted on staying here for our 2 night trip . We were upgraded to a 'deluxe' room, (we paid for a standard room and were upgraded on account of low occupancy). Our room was facing some ugly brick buildings, no view to speak of but we didn't pay for a view so I won't grumble about that. I'll start with the bathroom; the tile floor looked filthy. I actually got on my hands and knees at one point with some dampened toilet paper to clean it - but it was ground in dirt and I hated walking on it in my bare feet, especially after a shower. The shower temperature was tepid at best and the bathroom just never got warm (January, no double glazing, Dublin). Neither one of us could bear to stay in the shower a moment longer than necessary.

My average frame American husband had to stand sideways, the bath was that narrow, peeling paint, chipped grout, cracked tiles.

The room was ok, but no satellite tv, however the bed was very comfortable indeed, kudos for that.

Also, there are no in-room area guides, no dedicated concierge, just a small reception area with one person on duty to check people in and out. I can't comment on the food because we ate out but as I recall Irish breakfast was 30-35 euros!

The hotel is on a street facing a canal - but it really is not an attractive street at all. Apparently, (according to a chatty cab driver) renovations are due to take place in the next few years.

Dublin as a destination is very disappointing on the whole - it is pricing itself like St Tropez or Milan but without a shred of the glamour.

We chose the Clarence for what appeared to be its lovely location rights on the river Liffey, and comfortable rooms with a good restaurant. Overall, I liked the hotel, but the rooms were small. Also, there is a major road between the river and the hotel. Our room had a balcony, but really its view was not very scenic. Though supposedly an upgraded king room, it was quite small.

The bed and linens were good quality, service was above average, but the breakfast below par. One nice things is that the rooms are very quiet. The public areas are sort of subdued elegant, but lacked life, maybe just because it was January.

So my wife and I stayed at the Clarence for our honeymoon and couldn't have been happier with our stay. It was obviously a special occassion and I'm sure that had something to do with our experience, but even with that said - we were consistently impressed. The service was great - they did everything they could to help us with restaurants and places to go. The hotel itself may not be luxurious in the way a Ritz may be or other brand new hotels, but everything is high quality and timeless. We've never seen a hotel with such quality craftsmanship and authentic furniture and woodwork. If you're looking for "in your face" luxury and style, this may not be your place - but if you want a place that is located perfectly on the river and temple bar and is perfect in an understated fashion - this is the best call you can make.

  • Liked — Authentic and sophisticated style
  • Disliked — nothing

Please do consider this before booking. Within the hotel complex there are many drinking and dining experiences, from the chilled out bliss of The Study to the super stylish Octagon Bar, the perfect spot for an afternoon cocktail or a laid back nightcap. We also have Michelin star chef Oliver Dunne's Cleaver East restaurant within our walls and we are very proud that Oliver and his team provide all catering at the hotel, so whether it's a late night bite in your room or a Full Irish breakfast the next morning, you know your food will be of the highest standard, made from the freshest produce, closely cared for by Michelin starred hands. In the bowels of our building you will find the luxurious cocktail and food bar The Liquor Rooms, home to Dublin's arts set and the first ROI bar ever to be nominated in the prestigious Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards.
