Good music pub but can get very crowded later. Its a traditional looking boozer with a good atmosphere.

“Great pub!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 August 2011

We recently visited this pub and had a great time! The people were friendly and there was live Irish music. It does get crowded, but in a friendly way.

“Likeable pub, but often I don't know why.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 April 2011

OK the main things that annoy me about this pub are

1. The Guinness you get is usually badly poured - mine looked like it had been settling for about 5 minutes before I ordered it and then the bar man handed it to me as it overflowed down the side of the glass. If this had been a one-off then I'd sound like a crank but it happens so many times I come here!

2. The music and ballads are at best mediocre. Now, I'm all in favour of acoustic sessions but there's a big flaw going around in terms what people view as "authentic" music sessions. In the old folk club days - which is where this pub derives it's principal fame - in those times complete silence was demanded of customers in the music area and respect shown to the singers/performers. They did not have to compete with all the usual pub noise. So what I'm saying is that tourists often say to me "this is very authentic" - NO IT'S NOT! The casual musicians don't just happen to be there out of love for the music. It's usually a cash or discounted beer deal. And why not? the pub makes their money from trad music.

3. Prices are quite dear, but no dearer than some other city centre venues. Why do tourists never notice that prices are dearer only in Dublin city centre than elsewhere?

4. The TV in the bar showing endless UK premiership soccer is pure heresy, Plain and simple.

Having said that there's usually a good atmosphere in the bar and has the best smoking area in Dublin.

“Love this place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 August 2009

This was our favorite place in Dublin. The staff is amazing, friendly and funny. Nice people, good music every night. It is in a good location, and it looks good inside (from what I could see in the dark :D ).
I really recommend this pub if you want a truly Dublin experience :)
