I took my group of study abroad students to "Experience Gaelic Games" this past week- it was certainly a highlight of our month in Dublin! Many students had expressed interest in learning about the Gaelic sports, as well as their role in local culture. Georgina and her crew kept us busy with learning the basics of Gaelic football, hurling, handball, and even some Irish dancing. Our 3+ hour program was packed with learning, playing, and laughing. A strength of the program was the way they were able to tailor the program to meet our needs and interests. Money well-spent!

We enjoyed the Gaelic games experience as a group of 12 on a stag weekend.
It was really easy to book and Georgina, who runs the company, is very helpful and accommodating.
We were based in Cork, but she organised to come down from Dublin with Liam the instructor (a lovely man and incredibly enthusiastic) to a local GAA club where we could learn the skills of Gaelic Football and Hurling.
We learnt the basics of each sport and then went and played some mini matches.
You'll need sports kit, some hand-eye coordination and a fair amount of energy, as it's exhausting to be playing hard for a few hours.
Being a sporty bunch of lads there was a little rough and tumble and no lack of competitiveness.
It was wet and windy when we were scheduled to do it, but the club had an indoor facility which saved us being outside in the rain and cold. Although we did brave it at the end of the session!
Overall, it was the highlight of the stag weekend. Great fun, well-organised and an excellent introduction to a side of Irish culture that you might not otherwise get to see.

I had five friends over visiting from Denmark, and I wanted to introduce them to the Gaelic Games, so I decided to contact "Experience Gaelic Games".
It was truly a GREAT experience, and the coaches & staff were so friendly. They gave a brief introduction to each type of game, and afterwards we spent a lot of time actually playing.
I would highly recommend this experience to anyone who don't know anything about the ancient Gaelic games, but want to discover them at first hand! - And on top of that you get to experience the extremely friendly Irish culture :o)

Experience Gaelic Games Limited
32 Claude Road, Drumcondra
Dublin 9

Run by a local Dublin GAA Club, the Experience is a load of fun for kids, teens and adults. You start off with an introduction into the 4 GAA approved sports (Football, Hurling, Handball and Rounders, if you’d like to know) and are then taken onto the fields for some coaching in each sport. At the end of it all you actually get to play a game of football as if you are a Local. It’s a fun, action packed fantastic half day (3+ hours) of learning and participating in Irish sport up close and personal.

The Experience normally takes groups of 6+ but if your group is less than that or even if you are on your own do not hesitate to contact them. If a Session is On and Open you may be included in the day. What better way to meet others who know as much or as little as you do about the games? I was on my own but was able to join a Session without any problem.

Georgina is a Club member who volunteers her time at the Experience. She is knowledgeable, friendly and extremely enthusiastic about Gaelic Games. She gave the introduction, showed us videos of some county games and helped answer questions we had about the GAA, games/teams in Ireland and Na Fianna GAA Club in Dublin. Cormac and Fran are two coaches at the Club; they were patient, skillful and very knowledgeable about all the GAA sports. All three have a real dedication to Gaelic games in Ireland and love to show anyone, novice or expert, the skills it takes to play football, hurling or other Irish sport.

If you are looking for some fun outside, rain or shine, and want to not only learn about Irish culture but experience some of it for yourself then this is a great place to do just that. We were lucky to have a beautiful sunny day for our Experience. I only wished we could have stayed longer! Luckily I was able to watch a few games on TV during my September visit. The Experience helped me to better understand the games, the rules and the calls, as I watched with local Irish fans in the pubs.

I was thrilled with my Experience!

Note: hurling and football are considered contact sports. Safety equipment is provided to you and you are taught the correct ways to play competently but, like any sport, it is possible for you to be injured if you are not careful. Play safe; have fun!
