Owner description: This bleak old jail was notorious in the 19th century for its harsh treatment of prisoners.

Many first time visitors to Dublin may not have heard of Kilmainham Gaol (Jail). This site has much historical meaning as it relates to both prison reforms and the Easter Rising. You must be fairly mobile to get through some of the areas. Nice museum and each time I've done the tour (lost count at four) the presenter was very knowledgeable.

The history of the Irish Rebellion of 1916 is divisive, but whatever your opinions , the kilmainham tour is a must. The guides are knowledgeable, and have a real passion for their subject. Any visitor cannot fail but to gain a real insight into the tragic fate if the leaders of the uprising. Well worth a visit. Highly recommended!

We found the tour of the Gaol to be not only fascinating but also a history lesson of Irelands struggle for Independance. The tour guide was excellent, and luckily at this time of year there was no lineup.

Walking through the Gaol it was easy to imagine the grim life these prisoners had.
Excellent value, worth the walk up the hill.

We used a Dublin Pass whilst we visited and this attraction is included - wow - our Tour Guide Enda was absolutely wonderful - you will have to queue as they do tours every 20 mins and it gets very busy but it is worth the wait.
