“Great atmosphere and location”
Reviewed 28 October 2011

I stayed at Kinlay for 3 nights with a couple of girls I was traveling with on holiday from university. The reception staff was FANTASTIC and very knowledgeable. The atmosphere was a very positive mix of home and a college dorm/house. The rooms were pretty quiet, and the staff was helpful at all hours of the day. The beds could use some updating, but it is a hostel and a bed is a bed, even if it doesn't look shiny and pretty. The rooms were well heated! The kitchen space was great, as was the free breakfast. It was great having computers to use for free, because I've stayed at other hostels which charge you to use them, even though wifi is free...Kinlay was great. The free walking tour they offered to their guests was fantastic, as was the location in the city. It was about a 5-10 minute walk to get to anything big like Temple Bar, Grafton Street, Trinity College, Jameson Distillery, and Christchurch Cathedral. The MacCoole tour to the Cliffs of Moher was also great, and I'm so glad we followed their recommendation to go on it. You can tell the people there really care about helping people enjoy the city and have a great experience.

Room Tip: I would shoot for the 10 or less rooms if you want to get real sleep. The 5 bed was nice, though it...

I stayed here before and after my shamrocker tour because they leave from the same building. Bathrooms average but clean. Wifi crappy, but free computers. Don't be afraid to assert yourself because otherwise you'll never get one. Kitchen alright. No lift. Lockers really big and pretty reasonable. Not in the rooms though. In the second room I had we couldn't charge anything becasue the power wouldn't work.

I had a great time staying at the Kinlay House! I even booked a tour through Shamrocker Adventures while I was there and so I stayed before and after the tour! Perfect easy idea! I stayed in the female dorms because I am a young, married woman traveling alone and worked out great. Clean and organized. Great location and the bus stop to the airport on Airlink 747 is right outside the front door. You can't go wrong with a stay at the Kinlay House. Oh and free 10-15 minute calls on the house phone, that was a plus!

I stayed in the largest type of room, a mixed dorm of 16. The room was cleaned everyday, and the beds were comfortable. Toilets are mixed, which might put some people off. Showers are not mixed, and are clean and warm. There are lots of facilities, including a large common room with a pool table, and there are several computers with internet access as well as wireless internet access, all free of charge. The hostel feels very safe as they check that you are a resident when you come in, and there are large and small lockers available, for a small fee. The location is excellent, within walking distance of most attractions and right next to Temple Bar. There is also a bus link to the airport, which is very handy. The hostel puts on lots of events and is very welcoming. Highly recommended for younger travellers on a budget.

Thanks for the review - we appreciate your feedback. Glad you enjoyed your stay with us. Apologies for the problems you had with the WiFi during your stay. We have reset our WiFi system and I have been checking with our guests for the last few days and it seems to be working well now. Our IT department cited a technical glitch - not much consolation to you now but I appreciate you passing this on and rest assured it will be working perfectly next time you visit!

Kinlay house is in an awesome location, walking distance to everything you could want to see, trinity college, christchurch cathedral, temple bar, cheap places to eat, supermarkets etc. This was the best selling point of the hostel. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. There are some awesome Shamrock tours that leave from the hostel friday mornings (we did the 3 day southern ireland one and it was absolutely fantastic).
Breakfast was standard toast or a choice of two cereals which was fine.

the thing that prevents me from rating it above average was the showers. I had 3 showers here and each one was ice cold until i was nearly finished. There was no where to hang a towel or clean clothes so you had to get out into the main bathroom area to change or do so in the cramped shower which was very awkward.

If you arent bothered by the shower situation it is a great place to stay!

Room Tip: The stairs are quite steep so if you can its worth trying to stay on level 1 or 2, there is no eleva...

Thanks for your feedback on your stay. We're glad you liked most of the aspects of your stay. I appreciate your comments about the showers. We have had some recent issues with our system which have since been rectified. However we are rebuilding our plant room and installing a brand new eco friendly water heating system and completely refurbishing all our communal shower rooms at the end of October. I think you'll really like the new system and rooms. For the moment the old system is working well again - I apologise for the water issues during your stay. Regarding the noise it is an unfortunate feature of being so central but if you're ever back we have free ear plugs at reception if you need them!
We hope to see you again soon at Kinlay.

PROS:
- close to a lot of stuff: next to Christ Church Cathedral, near Dublin castle, St. Patrick's Cathedral, Marsh's library, St. Audeon's, Temple Bar, not too far from Grafton St, Trinity College & St. Stephen's Green
- the staff is pretty friendly. each one that i spoke to was friendly & helpful
- there is free breakfast everyday and a free dinner on thursdays (i believe). it's not the best food, but in a city where decent food is stupidly expensive, it's nice to have a free alternative

CONS:
- the rooms are a bit dingy, mostly the carpet. you'll definitely be tempted to not let your bare feet touch the ground. they're also pretty small, but that's expected
- showering is ridiculously annoying. you have to press the knob in the shower about every 10 seconds or the water will shut off. it's a freaking ridiculous way to cut down on their water bill. it's more uncomfortable than camp as a kid
- the beds are child-size. either i haven't slept in a twin bed in way too long or these beds are smaller & i think it's the latter. and the blanket is just big enough to fit the bed. i honestly have never seen a blanket this small. and it's usually cold in dublin, so you'll need it
- on at least one floor, the bathroom is shared by guys and girls. this is beyond awkward and creepy. and guys are generally dirtier than girls, so it's completely off-putting to walk in the bathroom while a guy is going #2. it's just wrong.
- there's no elevator. it definitely was a problem for me b/c i was on the top floor (up 4 flights of stairs, i believe) and i had a 50 lb suitcase & a 25 lb backpack. it was a horrible workout after a busy day & flight. this is really where it bothered me being there b/c we were 2 young girls with big bags on the top floor & the staff didn't help at all. other than that, the staff was nice
- the breakfast is free, but it's not very good. just toast & really bad cereal along with coffee, tea & milk. if you want meat or dairy, something that will give you energy, you have to buy it somewhere else
- only ppl that are staying there are allowed in. so, if you want to have a friend or someone else come to your room, forget about it. it's like a child summer camp again this way
- the internet does work or barely works at best. you have to sit on the bottom floor to get it work at all or just use their computers (which are usually in use)
- we were told when booking that the airport shuttle is complimentary. it's not, it costs €7 per person. and they stop at other hotels, so it's not a direct drive. so, take the air shuttle bus or something else. those have more times anyway
- it's pretty noisy outside, so it can be hard to get sleep. we were just so worn out that it didn't matter to us. we fell asleep as soon as we had something to lay on
- you have to bring your own towels

we stayed here twice. once at the beginning of our trip and once at the end. it's the cheapest accommodation you'll get, but i think you can get an actual hotel with better amenities for about €5 more per night.

Room Tip: we booked a private double & got a 5-bed room! so, book a private & hope for the best!

Thanks for your review and your feedback. We are glad you liked our staff, location, the breakfast and the free food. We'd like to get back to you on a few of the points you raised in your cons section if that's ok.
- Carpets. Our carpets are about 4 years old but we do shampoo all our carpets every 2 months and they are all hoovered after all guest departures. Sometimes if you are sharing a dorm unfortunately other guests can make a mess in the rooms and though we try and keep them clean, we can't stop guests making a mess.

- Showering - we have push button showers for two reasons. To stop wastage of water and to stop guests leaving hot showers on and draining all the hot water for other guests. In the past some guests left these showers on in the common bathrooms draining the hot water from our systems and this measure was introduced to stop this. These buttons are designed to be pushed every minute and we are checking the valves at the moment to replace any faulty ones. We are also completely refurbishing all communal bathrooms at the end of the month. We have separate male and female facilities for showers and sinks on every floor and on one floor there is a communal toilet room but it's up to you which bathroom you use.

- Beds: Our beds are the hostel standard of 1.91 metres long which has never been a problem for any of our guests up until now. I am sorry if you feel this is too small. Our duvets similarly are the industry standard single duvet size - all hostels I am aware of stock this size so again I apologise but we have not had a complaint about this before.

- No elevator: I am sorry about this but due to the historical nature of the building we cannot fit a lift in without compromising the structure of the hostel. Normally our staff would try and help guests if they have time but our reception is usually very busy and we do not always have time to help guests with their things. We do have lockers on the ground floor if guests want to store their belongings and take the essentials to their room.

- We offer a basic free breakfast with a selection of cereals, a selection of bread and condiments (chocolate spreads, jam, honey, peanut butter) and tea or coffee. For guests who wish more than this we do offer a range of extras which can be paid for such as scrambled eggs for €3 or brekfast rolls for €2.50. I am sorry that you do not feel that the breakfast is up to scratch but unfortunately it is very difficult to provide a budget breakfast that everyone likes.

- Security: we only let guests up to the rooms which is normal security especially for a city centre hostel. Guests can have friends visit them in the common rooms (which we have several of). Allowing non-guests to rooms can result in beds being taken, possesions being stolen and a myriad of other hassles for other guests which is why we do not allow it. This is a common rule in most hostels - I am sorry if you feel this is a childish rule but most guests are happy for the security of themselves and their things that this is enforced.

- We have a 12mb connection in the hostel which unfortunately occasionally gets clogged if more than about 80 people are using the internet at the same time. This does not happen too often but we are working with our IT company to find a solution to this and I am sorry if this was a hassle for you. All our internet and WiFi however is free.

- Airport shuttle: our website clearly states that the airport shuttle only operates to the airport not from the airport and costs €7. All our staff are fully aware of this as we book and sell the tickets here and have never operated a free shuttle service. The hostel shuttle service does pick up from other hostels but the journey takes 30 minutes from pickup which is clearly stated on timetables and the information on tickets.

- Towels: these are complimentary in private rooms (twins and singles) but can be rented for €1 if you are staying in a dormitory.

I hope this clarifies some of the issues you raised and we hope you will come back again when our refurbishments are completed and give us another try!
