This review is pretty much the same as most of the others about Clontarf Castle. The lobby is pretty much the only part of the castle left, whereas the rest of the hotel is new.
My wife, daughter and myself stayed here for 3 nights and genuinely enjoyed ourselves. The rooms are comfortable and the staff is friendly and accommodating.
The biggest "pro" is also the biggest (and only) "con," and that's the location.
It's about 4 miles to the city center, and your choices are to either walk 1/8th of a mile to the nearest bus station or get a taxi (about 15-20 euros each way). The reason this can also be interpreted as a "pro" is because it is SO quiet! (Because of the comfortable weather, we left our windows open at night and slept quite well)
The castle boasts 3 places to eat, none of which are especially cheap (but then again, not many things in Dublin are). We found ourselves at the Knights Bar for dinner and breakfast, as it was the least expensive of the 3 options.
If you have your transportation covered, (IE: rental car, jet pack, etc....), then I definitely recommend this hotel!

Stayed at Clontarf castle for 2 nights in August. First experience visiting Ireland and Dublin. Enjoyable stay overall. The view from the hotels window overlooked the cemetery and dustbins which was not particularly pretty but porter was very friendly and check in was efficient. Room was large and comfortable - very much like a holiday inn - was hoping for a few extra touches to make you feel like you are staying in a castle in your room but nothing special. Breakfast was delicious but restaurant very small and over crowded, no service either so you arrive and wait for ages for someone to seat you. Not well managed. Overall a good stay and we would probably be back. Good overall value for money.

Room Tip: Ask for a room without a view of the bins/ cemetery. :)

My wife and I stayed at at the Clontarf Castle Hotel in the summer of 2012. The staff and room were great, the room was clean, the bed was comfortable and the shower was nice as well. The concierge went above and beyond to point out great locations to visit and local places to eat and drink. He is a highlight of the hotel. The breakfast was good and so was the wait staff. The quality of this hotel and the staff are at a much higher level than the price we paid. Overall this is a great hotel with great staff and I would definitely recommend this hotel to family and friends.

The one thing I wanted to do on our vacation was stay in a castle. There is not much of the original castle left, just a small piece in the lobby. However, the new portion of the hotel is perfectly blended with the castle portion. Around every corner in this hotel is a surprise! The rooms were adequate in size. The bartender was very informative and gave us lots of information on attractions in the area. The breakfast buffet was wonderful and had lots of choices, including the traditional irish breakfast items. This hotel is not within walking distance to the town centre. A taxi ride cost about 15 euros. We were pleased to learn that the "hop-on, hop-off bus" arrives at the front door at 9:10 in the morning (only thing was that to get back to the hotel you have to take a taxi)

Room Tip: Be careful when booking your room...our room had a king sized bed (which was two twin beds pushed together) Had to make sure you did not get too close to the middle of the bed since the beds were on wheels.

I have stayed in the hotel over the last few years, great location, clean, friendly staff, the one gripe i have always had was the poor standard of food, over priced for the quality, breakfast was more in keeping with Ikea leftovers, Lunch always hit or miss, no matter what the meal there was always a good chance of getting your eye wiped and as for dinner, real Kitchen Nightmares stuff. But on the last visit i was shocked, the breakfast was beautiful, cooked perfect, fresh ingredients, nothing Ikea about it, Lunch and Dinner were delicious having asked a staff member i was informed that they had hired a new Chef, i can only thank the staff for listening to my comments about the bad food and doing something about it, the new chef they have now makes this hotel the perfect choice for a stay outside of dublin
