“Very clean beautiful hotel”
Reviewed 6 February 2010

Excellent Hotel close to the city about 2 miles. Bus 130 will take you into the city or you can take a taxi about $20 USD plus extras. We stayed here twice and will be back the next time we are in Dublin. Staff was very pleasant and helpful, rooms were clean and average size for europe. Breakfest was excellent as was the food. The Hotel was well decorated in a castle motiff and the original manor house part of the hotel was carefully restored to maintain its original look. The lobby can get very busy with weddings and conferences.

If you like medieval style and want to feel yourself like a knight in a castle but having modern comfort - this is the place you are looking for. We stayed there 2 nights for my hubby's BDay, it was my surprise to him and he was absolutely delighted. The room is rather modern, but it was alright. They have 3 restaurants, we spent all free time in Knights Bar near lovely fireplaces. Wrt how to get to the hotel - if you take the bus 130, if have two options - either travel to the very last stop (straight near hotel parking) - which takes about 50 mins form the city center, or get off the bus on the stop next to board saying 'Clontarf Castle hotel - 300 metres' and walk 7 minutes up the hill. This way bus trip will take 20 mins from the city center. First time we travelled till the last stop as we didn;t know where to get off, but then it was nice and easy to find.
There is nothing to add really to the previous reviews...
Oh yes, I'm a 'cleanness freak', so yes, our room was very clean. Really.
Also, we had a room without breakfast, but we went for one and it was awsome. It is 10 euro per person (self-service, hot food and european) and it's definitely worth it.
The only tow minuses to the hotel: first is that that walls are very thin and you can hear every sound in the coridor and rooms nearby. But it's not bothering as it becomes quite by the time one goes to sleep. Second: for those having issues witht he back - the matras is too soft, and I had a backache the next day. However, it's only couple nights...
We thouroughly enjoyed our stay and were very sad to leave.

One for castles, the Clontarf Castle was a fantastic stay. Set in the Clontarf suburb, it's nicely secluded and boasts many amenities. The pub was brilliant and the "fresh" Guinness on tap was excellent (here in the States there is a bitter aftertaste, not the case there). The clientele can be a bit posh, but I was never treated rudely for dressing in jeans and a sweatshirt.

The staff was very courteous and loaned me a AC converter for my stay (forgot mine during packing) free of charge. The room service was pretty good and a small number of menu items are available throughout the night/early morning. The lobby has a few dimly amber lit nooks that are perfect for chilling out in. The castle is a bit spooky at night and there is a graveyard in the back of the castle adding to it's spookiness.

The one con of the hotel is it's location from the City Center of Dublin, you have a bit of a walk through suburbia streets to get to the bus station which is right on the bay and is absolutely freezing in the winter. The buses arrive around every 20 minutes or so, so remember to bundle up properly if you go during the winter.

All in all, it was a great stay and I would recommend it to all.

Cheers

Stayed one night in Clontarf castle.Beautiful location, nice castle, and good food. Bedroom was small but comfortable. But it's a pity the walls are so thin. The people next door were talking in a moderate tone, and we could hear every word of the conversation, even with the tv on. We rang reception who said there was nothing she could do to help us. Found the receptionist very unhelpful. We were woke up at least 5 times during the night due to the noise. There was no shower gels, shower cap, or any extras in the bathroom.

Fantastic time, probably the best New Years Eve i have had in a long time. The ball was amazing and despite the large number of guests the food was spot on, it was great and it was hot which in unusual when catering for that number of people.

The room we had was a lot better than our last stay, no masking tape in sight so much improved.

Had a great time, would definately go back, staff were as great as ever, food was awesome, best place to stay near Dublin. Ignore any comments about too far from the city, its not bang in the centre, but you can hardly move it can you. Location great, dont go anywhere else.

We already knew that Clontarf Castle would be a 15 min taxi ride into Dublin so were not disappointed when we arrived. I can understand that this may be a problem for some people but the taxis are very prompt and not too expensive. We enjoyed the relative calm of Clontarf after a hectic day in the city. The hotel entrance reminded me of Harry Potter and we really liked the way that they have merged old and new. We were disappointed that the Indigo Lounge never seemed to be open but were pleased to find free internet access in the lobby. The restaurant serves good food and the breakfasts were particularly good. Overall, a good value hotel.

Visually, this is an impressive hotel and in the main, it was a delight to stay here. The food in particularly good; the Fahreinheit Grill is on a par with Michelin starred restaurants and the breakfasts were very good too. In the main staff were friendly and helpful but there tends to be a reliance on the Conceirge which means when he's not around, staff can't help with directions or local informaiton. Unfortunately, for most of our visit the conceirge wasn't around, which resulted in us being given bad directions to a special event and getting lost. Sound proofing was good, we never heard our neighbours.

Downsides, or niggles really: the water pressure in the shower was feeble and the complimentary toiletries weren't really what you'd expect from a four star hotel. Also, the Indigo Lounge was only open over Sunday lunchtime - the rest of the time we were there, it was closed. The Knights Bar was OK, but I was looking forward to an evening sipping cocktails.

The one aspect that we were very disappointed with was the in-house gym. The website describes it as small, which it is, as well as very cold and out of date. I tried the treadmill, but had to step off when the belt started to slip and I realised it was dangerous. I then tried the rowing machine, but again had to give up when I realised it was missing a timing and distance calculator. There wasn't a cross-trainer so we had to give up at this point. The hotel suggests the local Westwood gym as an alternative, but when we drove past one evening, there was a queue of cars waiting to get into the car-park. Perhaps the hotel shouldn't mention it's fitness facilities, they are well below what you'd expect.
