“Arts and Crafts charm.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 August 2011

I and my parents stayed at the Schoolhouse Hotel for two nights at the beginning of August 2011. It was a last minute arrangement having been severely disappointed by a hotel elsewhere. The Schoolhouse could not have been a more different experience; the staff were extremely helpful in arranging our stay, providing detail on the local area and about the best places to visit in Dublin itself. Our most important requirement, parking for the duration of our stay, was available for no additional charges.

The rooms that we stayed in had William Morris arts and crafts theme decor with solid wood furniture and huge beds. Generous quantities of tea, coffee and biscuits as well as flat or sparkling water were provided in the rooms, together with an bucket of ice. Flat screen televisions in both rooms gave a good selection of Irish and British television channels and also allowed viewing of recent movies for no additional charges.

The ensuite bathroom facilities both had a fixed central shower over bath facility with victorian styled suite. The recessed sink area with surrounding triple mirrors was appreciated by my father; he said he'd had his best shave for years having been actually able to see his chin!

Breakfasts were served over a good timeframe with a wide selection of cold and hot food on offer. Hot food items were cooked to order and done exactly as requested.

The attached but separate Schoolhouse Bar was a pleasant bonus; excellent staff, delicious and generously portioned food at reasonable prices with a relaxed atmosphere. We only intended to go there for one evening meal but it was so good we couldn't resist going back for a second time the following day. I did not visit the associated restaurant, Olivier's, but can only say that it seemed very well attended.

I'd definitely be quite happy to stay here again!

Just back from a great long weekend break in Dublin. Trip was complimented by our stay in the Schoolhouse Hotel.
All staff were so friendly and helpful - nothing was too much trouble.
Rooms - clean, comfy and spacious. 'Welcome' bottle of wine and box of chocolates were a nice touch.
Food - absolutely delicious.
Hotel is only 10-12 euro taxi / 20-25 minute walk from Temple Bar.
If we ever go back to Dublin then the Schoolhouse would be our first choice of accommodation.

This hotel was perfect. Our room was beautifully decorated, very comfortable and clean. The gourmet restaurant was superb and the pub was great fun(good food too). Breakfast was complete and included hot and cold choices...we loved the eggs and salmon. This hotel is located in a quiet area not far from bus line and central Dublin. It is also on a bus line from the airport...so convenient! We would most definitely stay there again. Thank you for a terrific stay in Dublin.

We visited Dublin for the first time this month and found out about Schoolhouse Hotel on tripadvisor.ie. We were extremely pleased with the nice rooms, the excellent and helpful staff, and the delicious breakfasts, as well as the cozy ambience. We also enjoyed the adjacent pub. The hotel is easy walking distance from places like Trinity College, shopping, and tour bus stops, and it is not far from the airport and the ferry port. Each room is named for Irish notables (we had the Maude Gonne room), which is a nice touch. We'll definitely stay at this hotel the next time we're in Dublin!

a friend and i just returned from two weeks in england and ireland. one of the places that we stayed was the schoolhouse in dublin, ireland.
this converted schoolhouse which played a part in the irish rebellion, is now the perfect home away from home. the staff was excellent. they went out of their way to make our stay of five days very pleasant.
the hotel is a bit away from the centre of the city, so it is quite. beautifully situated on the lock canals, it is a very easy walk to get to the centre of it all. there is a wonderful pub that serves excellent food as well as a formal dining room. the breakfast comes with the cost of the room.
the rooms themselves are named after famous irish writers and politicians. the william morris wallpaper and furniture makes each room very cozy and unique. the bathrooms always had enough towels and the low bathtubs made getting in and our of the roomy tubs easy and safe.
if i am ever in dublin again....and i will be, (what a great city!!!) i would return to the schoolhouse without question.

Room Tip: we did not see the rooms in the basement, but we heard that the rooms on the main floor and the seco...

This is the second time we have stayed at the Schoolhouse and we were not disappointed.
Excellent staff very helpful, even moving cars in the car park to accommodate our early arrival. we enjoyed a super bar meal with the best steak pie ever huge chunks of quality beef in a rich gravy.
Comfortable huge bed in a well equipped room. Yet again a great breakfast with the best ever Pain Aux Raisin, I did not establish if they bake there own but they were amazing! Followed by super poached eggs with nice soft runny yokes. A great visit and I am sure that we will be back.

We booked the Schoolhouse after reading TripAdvisor reviews. While we look at the good reviews, we also take note of the bad ones to see how applicable they are to our requirements noting that in larger cities there will be more bad reviews. On balance, it appeared that the food and service were some of the issues, not to worry, as you can always eat elsewhere, and why not in a vibrant city like Dublin. Also we quite like “old world” charm, where some complaints were directed, as well as contemporary styles but we shy away from the standard average chain hotels.
So when we arrived near the end of lunch time after driving a few hours, we were delighted to find a reasonably decent charming old building with similar style reflected in the rooms, certainly nothing flash, some maintenance required to keep 4 stars, but we saw nothing that was bad enough to complain about (maybe we had a better maintained room??). Parking is available in the hotel grounds but if you arrive at lunch time, spaces may be limited due to restaurant guests (we just managed to squeeze in), but we saw no problem other times. The surrounding area is quite pleasant with tree lined streets and a canal beside the hotel. Being very hungry, after checking in we walked through the bar and it seemed OK, the staff were attentive so with some trepidation we decided to have a quick snack lunch before starting to explore Dublin. Well we were pleasantly surprised with the reasonable service, quick delivery of the drinks and the food was reasonable.
The hotel is a pleasant 15-20 min walk past Merrin Square Park and some of the famous Dublin doors, then skirting Trinity College to Ganton St pedestrian mall. We found that the cosy room had a comfortable bed with crisp linen, there was a small sitting area with 2 chairs and a small table next to the small window, and the desk and chair just squeezed in. I can’t recall the bathroom implying neither bad nor memorable (or ageing memory)! Daily room service was done as expected.
After 3 weeks of B&Bs around Scotland and Ireland, we decided to venture into Ganton St for breakfast each day. This proved a good decision as like most places in Ireland we found very friendly service, and there is a bonus of being able to watch the locals start their day. After one late return from a big day exploring Dublin, we decide to tempt fate again and have a meal in the hotel. We opted for the upstairs dining area of the bar (not the separate restaurant). At first we couldn’t see a waitress, after some wait one appeared and again our food and service were reasonable, nothing to rave about but quite acceptable.
On balance the hotel needs a spruce up to maintain its 4 stars and justify the price they charge.
