“Great atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 June 2014

What a quaint little hotel. We stayed here 2 nights and could quite happily stayed longer. Everything about this hotel was just great from the big comfortable room to the lounge, bar and breakfast areas within the converted old school house with its beautiful old soaring wooden ceilings. Fortunately the rooms are in a well disguised new addition to the old buildings so firstly the old buildings haven't been compromised and secondly, guest facilities haven't been compromised by trying to incorporate them into a space that was never meant for this purpose.
Staff were very friendly and helpful, breakfast was delicious and the beds very sleep inducing!
Most unlike any hotel or B&B we have stayed in on our recent travels in England, Scotland & Ireland, the water pressure in the shower was enough to rip your hair follicles out - not sure if this is the case throughout the hotel but be warned about the seemingly unadjustable water pressure in room 104!
The hotel is located a convenient 10-15 minute walk from Trinity College and the Temple Bar area of town which was convenient for us.
Free wifi in the bedroom was a bonus although this now seems to be common place in almost all of the afore mentioned smaller hotels and B&Bs

Room Tip: Watch the shower in room 104!

Check-in was quick and easy. The front desk staff were very friendly and pleasant (as was almost everyone we met in Ireland).
All the rooms in the Schoolhouse Hotel are named for important Irish historical figures. We got the "Robert Emmet" room (Robert Emmet was an Irish patriot who was executed in 1803 for organizing resistance against the ruling British). Couldn't tell exactly which way it was facing but it was not the main street. (The view out the window was of a narrow passageway between the hotel and the neighboring property.) The room was very quiet; we never heard other hotels guests or other sounds. I always travel with 32dB earplugs anyway, but never needed them here.
Our room was quite large, very clean, and comfortable. Off the entryway (see photo) was the wardrobe (with two very plush terry bathrobes inside) and a large cabinet with bottled water and tea-making supplies.
Our bed was huge and very comfortable. Three of us (adults) managed to sleep on it. It was a little cozy, but we didn't wake up in each others' arms or anything.
The bathroom was also nice, quite roomy and clean.
The room also had a desk, a full-length mirror on the wall next to the bed (nice), and a faux-antique phone (the dial "holes" held pushbuttons that generated tones). There was also the usual wall-mounted, flat-screen TV but we didn't watch it.
Overall they did a good job converting an 1800's schoolhouse for modern use, but I suspect it affected the layout of some things in the bathroom: the shower head was on the side of the tub instead of at the front, and the sink faucet seemed set at an odd angle (see photos). I found it a little awkward to turn the faucet knobs but probably wouldn't bother most folks.
Just a couple other minor issues:.
Had to walk thru lots of doors and negotiate narrow hallways with tight corners to reach our room. I got disoriented more than once; it felt a bit like a maze at times...
The room key was a "real" key (not an electronic key) with a big, heavy metal weight attached to it (to discourage theft?). When you go out, you leave the key with the front desk and pick it up upon return. I'd feel safer with electronic keys (but I'm tech-centric).
---------------------
We really liked our one-night stay at the Schoolhouse. We didn't try their restaurant/pub but it looked like a nice place to eat at. The hotel is also next to the historic Grand Canal; it's still in use and the locks are neat to watch.
The Schoolhouse is great if you need a nice, comfortable hotel in the $150-200 range (double occupancy) and don't mind (or prefer) being in a peaceful neighborhood like Ballsbridge, and not in the middle of the action in downtown Dublin.

Nice rooms, well furnished, good service, lovely dining area with lots of history. Sort of a hike down to most destinations ---- actually the hotel is in Ballsbridge, just across the city boundary. But we are walkers and found it workable. Some nice touches: the staffs brings around ice to the room in late afternoon. Only complaint: the pillows are flat and hard - not up to the standard of the rest of the linens and decor.

Christmas present to my wife and I led us to visit Dublin for the first time in February. The Schoolhouse was chosen for my wife because she is a school teacher.
The hotel itself is a former school and is a very unique looking building. Located in Ballsbridge on the bank of Dublin's Grand Canal the hotel is perfectly situated for getting into the city or going to watch sporting action at the Aviva Stadium.
Inside the hotel the highlight has to be the double height restaurant which is located in what appears to be a former school hall. The bar is lively and vibrant with a brilliant Irish coffee.
The hotel staff are typically Irish, very friendly and helpful. I was a little disappointed with some of the decor with parts of the hotel, it didn't personally suit me and looked a little dated.
The food in the restaurant is good and reasonably priced. The breakfast is excellent, lots of choice no matter your taste. I personally enjoyed the Irish Breakfast with Irish pudding and beautiful mushrooms.
If you're looking to visit Dublin the Schoolhouse Hotel is certainly worth considering

On Sunday May 4th we got married in The Schoolhouse Hotel. Everything was flawless! The staff were so hospitable, enthusiastic and friendly. We had a small wedding of around 16 guests total. So we just ordered off the bar menu for our lunch. They printed out our own personalised menus and everything! The food was absolutely delicious! I still dream about those fishcakes! Even my granny, who is the pickiest eater in the world loved the food! She even brought her leftovers home with her! We were all able to sit at the same table in the balcony area. It was nice and quite and private and when I think about it, it really was like heaven.
The room that our ceremony was held in was so intimate, we gave Therese a few bits and bobs to decorate and she did an outstanding job! It was all so personal.

We had a large reception in Café En Seine that evening, so 10 of us booked rooms in The Schoolhouse, the rooms were really nicely decorated. I was able to have a bath before we left for our reception, which was wonderful. I was so relaxed.
To finish everything off, we all had breakfast there the next morning. Once again the food was delicious. It was such a blissful experience

I cannot thank the staff enough for making us all feel so special on our wedding day. There were so many little extra touches, it was completely stress free, we were both smiling from ear to ear when the bill came!

I cannot recommend The Schoolhouse Hotel highly enough! It was absolutely outstanding in every way!

This hotel & restaurant met all our expectations, the staff were extremely attentive and helpful, even found my sweatshirt I'd left in the bar - Guiness was very good.
The rooms are very comfortable, and the mezzanine in the restaurant was like being in a private dining room.

We had our wedding at the Schoolhouse hotel, I cannot recommend this place enough, the staff were so welcoming and very professional. No stone was left unturned and all with so little stress. The rooms were perfect, food delicious. Everything was perfect and that is feedback from the guests at the wedding too. It is an excellent location for holiday makers so I highly recommend this hotel.
