Well what can I say, this hotel is just superb, the rooms, the food, I just cannot fault it at all. We had dinner in the bar & it was superb, I can only imagine what the actual restaurant food is like if the bar food is that good. The rooms where spotless & not your typical hotel room, which I love, the bed was unbelievably comfortable & that coming from me is the highest compliment as I usually find it very difficult to sleep when I go away, but not this time. I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel & i will definitely be back. Thank you to all at the SchoolHouse for a fabulous stay!!

Room tip: Room 328, quiet & a lovely size, with the most comfortable bed!!!

The Schoolhouse is lovely to look at on the outside and is in a handy location, but my room was old, run down and needed some serious work done to it. It smelled of mould and caused me to wheeze during the night. The sheets did not smell or feel fresh and the room generally felt in need of a makeover and some air (dirty skirting board around the door to the outside etc...). The kettle was so old I had to click it in a certain way and hold it down in order for it to work.
We ordered two rounds of drinks at the bar early on Friday afternoon and even though there were only a few people in the bar at the same time as us, it took two reminders about our drinks for them to finally arrive. They forgot about both orders.
Won't be returning.

This is our second time staying. We returned as we had such a good first experience. Our second stay was equally good. Customer service is top class from the person at reception to the bar staff and restaurant staff. All made you feel welcome. They must enjoy working there because they looked happy and that was reflected in the way we were treated. What we enjoyed about the room was the king size bed, a luxury. The hotel is old wordly so I dont expect everything to be perfect so will not be nit picking. Location is excellent with only a 15 minute walk to Grafton St and 10 minute walk to Ballsbridge so very central for rugby (Aviva), concerts (RDS), shows (Bord Gais Theatre) and shopping (city centre). The main ingredients were there and so we left feeling relaxed and wanting to come back again which we hope to do soon!

Room tip: book room with a king size bed

Having read all the reviews I was expecting something really pleasant. What I got was a hotel that was well below 4 stars and seriously needs some money spent on the facilities. Our room had a very bad smell of damp - maybe because the bathroom extractor didn't work and there was no natural ventilation. The room furniture was very dated, chipped and needs to be updated. Again the bathroom was dated and not attractive to use - the over the bath shower was fixed at the side of the bath making it impossible to use without getting entangled in the shower curtain. Didn't try any food so cannot comment but the condition of the room did not fill me with confidence!

Great start - welcome note and bottle of wine in our room.

Given we were staying 4 nights for our 25th wedding anniversary I am surprised they gave us the room that gets bad write ups. The furniture was chipped, the bed so squeaky and lumpy and the bathroom anti slip mat was so stained - a horrible urine colour, so we asked to be moved.

We were put in a much quieter less tired room. Dont know why we could not have started off there.

However claims that the beds and bed linen are superb are not true. Pillows bit flat, standard white cotton sheets. The towels and bathrobes were not fluffy they were rough and scratchy - in both rooms. The beds are not super king size. They are 2 beds pushed together and the topper is thin so at the meeting point for cuddles you are aware of the hard ridges of the edges of both mattresses.

Breakfast was the worst we have had. It took forever to be served on every morning - I mean well over an hour, irrespective of how busy they were. I asked for porridge and a cooked breakfast and was brought them together. I was not offered a choice if this is what I wanted. I was even told it was many peoples preference. This may be because service is so slow - at worst 90 minutes one day for breakfast. But I didn't want cold fry up or cold porridge. So I ended up eating a mouthful of one and then the other.

The breakfast jams were the pokey little plastic cheap things you get in lower quality bed and breakfasts. There was no honey for the porridge. All little things - but if you are going to offer porridge then get the accompaniments right.

Every morning we had to ask for cutlery, milk or cups. This is simple stuff to get right - but it was beyond the waitresses, apart from the blond waitress.

Every egg cooked every way comes hard - even when soft is requested. The scrambled eggs were one solid mass, obviously portioned up in a ring. Hard boiled poached egg was a new one on me.

Many of the staff were not Irish nationals and did not have a good command of English. This made the place feel less special. Why is this important? Well the hotel is quirky and has named all its rooms after famous Irish people. They do not carry the Irish theme through. At the very least it would have been good to have more than one native Irish waitress. Foreign waitresses can make a place special if they interact with customers and explain where they are from and how they have ended up in Ireland. That in itself is charming. I am not anti foreigner. But I am anti people doing jobs they cannot do - especially in the customer service sector.

Our waitresses failed to understand food requests or explain problems properly. There was one exception - a blond Irish lady who was really on the ball, showed an interest in our plans and gave us exceptionally good advice on leaving a lot of time to get to the airport. We would have missed our plane without her help.

The place is a bit tired - and time and again the staff mentioned this. However this is not an excuse for poor service and as a guest who is looking to have a lovely time you can overlook a lot if you are made to feel welcome. Its as if the staff are harassed / embarrassed and are not comfortable with interactions with the guests. I actually felt sorry for the breakfast waitresses as they had been working the night before too til late.

But you know what - I don't want to be made to feel bad for the people serving me and be making excuses for why I am paying for a bad service. I want good service and be served by people who definitely want to be doing their job. If that does not happen I am not going to make a fuss.

The reception area could be anywhere in the world and there was no offer of help at reception. Nobody asked the usual polite questions such as "what are you up to today?" There was no offer of good top tips like "you can catch a bus outside to get there" or "best time to go is xxxx". The welcome pack in the room says ask for help - but none is volunteered and the reception area feels more like a back office. The reception book for taking restaurant bookings was scarily chaotic and at first they could not locate our booking. The page was torn out and given to the restaurant. This is just not professional.

I wrote to the hotel manager expressing these views, after he dropped me an email. He did not reply to my feedback. I would love to see this place back on its game as it could be wonderful. That's why I have bothered to write my longest ever review.

SchoolhouseHotel, General Manager at Schoolhouse Hotel, responded to this reviewResponded 30 January 2017

Dear Christine,

Thank you for again highlighting your experience here at the Schoolhouse Hotel. After corresponding with you by email and speaking with you while you were on the property, I do not fully understand why you then felt the need to revert to social media, 1 month after departing from us.
Apart from when you notified us regarding the room change, yourself or your husband never once mentioned any of the issues that clearly meant a lot to you while you were here. An email at the end of your stay and a TripAdvisor comment 1 month later is too late for me to do anything to try improve your stay. We always want everyone here to have the best stay ever, especially those celebrating a special occasion like you and your husband were, and for that I again send my most sincerest apologies.
We try to provide the best service possible and clearly we didn't deliver on this occasion. As you can see from previous comments that we take the level of customer service we provide very seriously.
What I do disagree with is when you highlighted in your email and in the above comment that the fact that 'many of the staff were not Irish nationals' was a problem. I have worked in hotels America, the UK, France and Brazil all in which i was not a local national. I feel that it is the mix of nationalities that make a place and I always felt welcomed wherever I worked. All my employees here work as one team, whether they are Irish, Brazilian, Spanish or British.
I also mentioned to you in my email that we are continually working on all aspects of the hotel and have recently introduced a new training procedure for all staff.
Regards,
Rory Doyle
