Great hotel, nice old world feel without any sacrifice on the comforts. The food and bar are great and have a buzzy atmosphere. Landsdowne road is only 5 mins away with lots of nice bars nearby. City centre is a 15 walk.

Spent three nights at the Schoolhouse Hotel in mid-October. The room was perfect; king bed, free internet over the TV, little walk out patio below street level, decent tub and shower, and attractively decorated. All rooms are named and individually decorated; our was the George Bernard Shaw room. The individually cooked breakfasts were an extraordinary take on the traditional Irish breakfast. Our omelets must have each had 4 eggs, and were filled with potatoes, onions, and other veggies, and filled an entire dinner plate. With breakfast here, no need to even consider lunch (unless you have reservations at another top Dublin restaurant and can't miss the opportunity for another great meal that day). We booked a three night, plus one dinner special (their restaurant, Olivers, is regularly packed with locals and served a terrific dinner), and considered this one of the best lodging values of our trip.

I would like to say that I picked the Schoolhouse Hotel via the internet as we were travelling around Ireland for 10 days. We preferred to be a little out of the city and I was pleasantly surprised with the locality and the fact that the area has a nice ambience with the canal and trees in the grounds and along the canal. There is a walkway alongside the canal and off the street.
Once inside the reception staff were exceptionally helpful and cordial and their personal presentation was very professional. Our bedroom was spacious and decorated more like a family bedroom than some hotels we have stayed in. We had a comfortable stay and the king bed was perfect. There were complimentary movies, bathrobes and toiletries, free mineral water and ice, tea, coffee, cookies an in room trouser press and off street parking.
We ate dinner which, early though it was and bar food, it was very enjoyable and tasty and well presented. The bar staff were very attentive and we even ran into a fellow Aussie working there from around our area and a very nice lad he was too. In fact the three lads on duty were happy, amiable and helpful.
We especially loved the decor in the bar and around the adjacent rooms and we enjoyed sitting around the fireplace in the evening.
We ventured into town but caught a taxi which really didn't cost that much and was quick and convenient.
All in all, I would certainly put this on the top of our list of the hotels we stayed in, both in Scotland and Ireland.

The Schoolhouse is a good place to stay while exploring Dublin. The city is not that big so the fact that the hotel is just off the centre (at a 20 min. walk) is ok. The public transport in Dublin is really really bad so if you do not like walking then take a hotel closer to the centre (but I wouldn't recommend Dublin in the first place in that case).

Food: as it happens we had dinner at 3 locations where Olivier Quenet is in command: the Canteen restaurant at the Schoolhouse hotel, the bar of the hotel (we assume he is also responsible for this) and La Maison downtown Dublin. So this calls for a nice comparison ;-)

-Schoolhouse's Canteen is a quiet restaurant. We’ve seen hardly any guests during our 5 day stay at Schoolhouse. But it deserves more: traditional French cuisine with the good ingredients: great bread, friendly professional waiter, excellent wines and well prepared dishes (we had a.o. coquilles and homemade paté). We still have dreams of the tarte tatin. It will cost you a bit, but the price/performance is ok. Things to improve: dreadful music and the sober ambiance.

-Schoolhouse hotel bar: decent pub food (e.g. fish chowder, beef & Guinness pie), a bit overpriced. The bar is a cozy place with fire places and couches. Things to improve: have the bar personnel lend a little from the professionalism of the Canteen waiter.

-La Maison: a small restaurant with some 20 seats inside, and a heated terrace with some 12 seats outside. (There is also an upstairs). We were the sole guests (on a tuesday) until approx 7:30 when suddenly multiple parties came in – it turned busy in an instant and then we knew why there was 3 staff needed here (they were bored to the bones until then and were very busy amongst themselves). It has French waiters who utter some French while serving you but replying in French does not seem to be appreciated. W.r.t. the food, La Maison is a simplified version of the Schoolhouse’s Canteen. We ate oysters, artichoke, pork chops and catch of the day. According to waiter #1 this was brill, but it turned out to be seabass (as waiter #2 told us). Quite different fish... Things to improve: the ‘French attitude’ of the personnel.

We chose this hotel for location purposes, 5 minute stroll to the start line of the Dublin City Marathon. It's a basic hotel as regards decor,& in need of an update, but for a short stay it is ideal. It is a 10 minute walk from Dublin city centre & in a nice quiet spot by the canal. Staff at reception, the bar and restaurant were very friendly. The room was nice but the bathroom a bit on the small side, especially the shower. I'm a shower pereson and to me, it just wasn't big enough or hot enough! We had a few drinks in the bar and there was lovely live music playing. The breakfast the following morning was lovely too, plenty of choice.
My only gripe was there was a wierd smell in the dining/breakfast room on the evening we checked in - thankfully it was gone by morning. Also in order to get from the rooms to the bar, you have to go through the dining room and outside to get there. A small gripe, but one nonetheless.

Beautiful building, restored to a high standard, wonderful reception and the rooms are huge. The bed was super king size and the room has everything you need. The breakfast was excellent, plenty of choice and friendly helpful staff. The hotel is right next to the canal which is great for an early morning stroll and then its on the bus routes into Dublin for the shopping and the sight seeing. We will definitely stay there again.

We spent 4 nights at this hotel at the end of our trip to Ireland, and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The staff were all very attentive, friendly and did everything they could to make our stay a good one. Our room was very nice, spacious, very comfortable king bed, and although the bathroom was small by US standards, it was clean and up to date.
The hotel is about a 20 minute walk to Trinity College area, but there were numerous buses and taxis around if we wanted to use them. We had a delightful evening meal in the bar one night, and although there was a wedding using the main dining room that night, the staff were very good and the service was excellent. A good hotel, out of the hustle and bustle of the tourist area of Dublin.
