“Welcome to 1940.”

I hate hostels, and I will do absolutely anything to avoid staying in one. The Dergvale Hotel, located, about 3 minutes from O'Connell St on the Northside of Dublin, is the perfect compromise for the frugal. No, it doesn't have wi-fi. No, it has no gym or sauna or pool. But that's not what people are staying here for. The lush 1930s decorations kind of make you feel like you're visiting grandma. And the staff keep that feeling alive with constant Irish cheerfulness. Upon arrival, we were upgraded to a better room at the very affordable price of €47.

For that price, we received a free breakfast atop immaculate place settings, a clean room with a spacious closet, two sinks, and a small but capable bathroom. The television was small, but if you're another country to watch TV, perhaps you shouldn't have left in the first place. Now, this is Ireland, and Ireland's hotels tend to be on the colder side unless you're staying at a chain like the Hilton or Marriott. But the room did come with an oil space heater that did just the trick.

The hotel is generally quiet, but any noise that does sound is echoed throughout the narrow hallways, so keep that in mind. But the kind staff, clean room, perfect location and killer price make the Dergvale the perfect place for anybody travelling to Ireland on a budget-- and doesn't want to deal with random people in a hostel, running up the halls half naked and being unbearably loud.

Only stayed the one night but would defo use again. Close to city centre and easy access to the airport. Very close to Croke park if GAA is of interest to you. Comfy and clean room, good breakfast and friendly staff. All in all, would have no problem recommending the Dergvale.

We were there for three nights and it was ok. The room was clean and comfortable. Staffs were amazing. But I didn’t like the stairs; going up and down the stairs drove me crazy at times. The price was affordable and the location wasn’t bad at all. Breakfast wasn’t too bad… it was eatable. If there is a next time, I wouldn’t stay at Dergvale Hotel no more than one night.

Nice people - not brand new by any means but very comfortable nevertheless. A simple and easy stay. Breakfast is basic but pleasant (porridge, cornflakes, fry, orange juice, grapefruit). Tv very small but location great.

I was impressed by the the staff that was so kind and friendly with us. The night that we arrived in Dublin we couldn't find the hotel so we called and they picked us up then they booked for us the day tours and gave us useful information about the city. The breakfast was very good, our bedroom was clean and the bed was comfortable. I highly recommend this hotel for its reasonable price and its central position.

I found this hotel online and it looked good so I booked it. It was worth the rate, which was low. It was very clean and had an ensuite. The hotel is quite old so the room was small, a bit noisy. The breakfast was very good. The staff were all friendly and helpful with directions, information, etc. It is about a 10-15 minute walk to downtown Dublin.

Room Tip: Nice affordable place away from the hustle & bustle of downtown.

We had room #3 on the first floor. It was a reasonable size and spotlessly clean (though why are hotels so reluctant to put up coat hooks?) The bed was comfortable, though a normal double takes some adaptation when you're used to a king-size.. I just have to say that the shower was probably the best I've ever encountered in a hotel!! - A wonderful tonic after a long day's footsore sightseeing.
Breakfast was fine, though as a veggie I would have liked something more than just eggs in various forms. A bit of tomato or a baked bean or two would have been welcome. Service was taciturn, but not unfriendly.
The location is good: 5 minutes walk to O'Connell St and not much more to Connolly Station, from where you can get a train to pretty much anywhere, including the lovely coastal DART routes, and Croke Park. We also walked to the Abbey Theatre and Temple Bar easily.
Yes, the building is old. It has that in common with the most beautiful buildings in Dublin! (Certainly avoid this place if you prefer a concrete box.) And the Aladdin's Cave of a bar in the basement, from which the owners will happily fetch you a nightcap, is a real bonus.
In general, staff were pleasant and helpful, if not specially chatty.
Down sides? -
Although we only heard occasional sounds from other rooms (seismic snoring on Night 1..!) ours was undeniably noisy at night from the street outside. The first night we tried leaving the window open, because the bathroom radiator was impossible to turn off. Big error. After that, we kept it shut, took a cover off the bed, and also bought some earplugs.
We were there for five nights. It would have been nice if our sheets could have been changed during that period. I do understand the need for economy (business and eco-friendly..) and wouldn't expect them changed every day, but by the last night they were feeling rather over-familiar..
I would guess it makes a big difference which room(s) you have here.. On the whole, though, we would go back. Armed with earplugs and a determination to be assertive about the sheets..

Room Tip: Since it's an old building with thin walls, I would guess the corner rooms with only one neighbo...
