One of the greatest collection's of eastern art and donated to the Irish people by the collector Chester Beatty. If you love art and history do not miss this gem in the heart of Dublin. Catch this and Dublin Castle right beside each other.

Any description of this library/museum will not do it justice or describe the awe and amazement you will feel from visiting fabulous collection of books from Asia by the wealthy mining magnate.
Take your time to absorb the beautifully crafted books and the stories they tell. And yes, the religious section gave me huge insight into their origins, but also how humans have behaved for thousands of years.
Apparently Lonely Planet describe this as the best museum in Europe. Ok, I have not visit them all, but it's certainly up there as the most enlightening and cultured one I've been to!!
You would be a fool to miss this out of your Dublin tour.

We were in Dublin for a couple of days and the weather was awful, so we were looking for activities in doors. We discovered the Chester Beatty Library, what a fantastic collection of rare books, many of them religious. It was fascinating! As a history and comparative religions teacher, I found this visit perfect. I got to see books I have only read about. If you like books and religion, I recommend a visit.

Great museum with every sort of book ever created by man. So many cultures are represented. There are books made on bark, papyrus, parchment...covers in jade, gold leaf and more. So many languages represented as well. I enjoyed this very much.
My one complaint is that the brochure lists the closing time at 5:30p,, rather than 5:00pm, which they go by. A kind gentleman told me that the brochures were printed with the mistake and it was decided to use them anyway due to cost. So people at the front desk, be sensitive to those who show up latehaving read your OWN brochure. Finally, asking people to abruptly leave the outside castle garden area because you "have an event" isn't very nice. How about signs up before hand that state,"this area will be closing at 5pm today. Sorry for any inconvenience."

We (two adults, one teenager) were just walking around Dublin and saw the billboard and decided to visit. What a wonderful exhibit of rare books. Memorable...part of the fun of visiting a new major city.
