A galpal and I treated ourselves to the seafood platter for 2 in Matts last night. The price of 60 euros seemed pricey - until it arrived! Half a sizable lobster, crab meat and claws, prawns and shrimps, oysters, mussels and clams in a delicious white wine broth and lashings of crisp samphire, all spankingly fresh and served with sauces and brown bread and butter. We were both hungry but even so could not finish the dish.
We had a bottle of Marlborough sauvignon blanc which was perfect with the seafood. A charming young blond waitress served us. It says a lot that the place was pretty much full by 8 p. m. on a miserable Tuesday evening in early June.
It is a well designed and decorated space and it happily accomodated family groups, tourists, locals and after work business people. A few people were contentedly just having a pint or glass of wine at the bar.
If you like fish and shellfish, this is the place ( although they do have meat dishes too) and at what I regard as a very fair price for a premium product.

On a recent solo trip to Dublin, Matt the Thresher was recommended by my hotel, which was a short distance away. I dined at the bar on Guinness and Fish & Chips. This was the best fish and chips I had ever had. There was good conversation with other bar patrons, as well as the bartenders. There is a pianist on the mezzanine level which adds beautiful music to the festivities. It is a very lively restaurant and was so good, I went back each night I was in Dublin. The Dover Sole was outstanding.

It looks like a pub. Feels like a pub, albeit a lovely one. Turns out to be the best fish restaurant for a very long way. Huge range of fish dishes. Make sure you see the specials board.

They do other meat and salad options too.

There is always a queue/wait at lunchtime - that tells you all you need to know.

Thank SirRoy

We had been walking forever trying to find a restaurant that was open on the Bank Holiday when we happened on this delightful seafood restaurant. They were busy but were very welcoming even though we did not have reservations. They sat us at a small table for two, then promptly moved us to "the best table in the house", which had just opened up. The ambience is bright, cheery and very tasteful. They have a large bar and at least four different seating areas, plus an outside patio. We ended up eating here two different evenings, and had superb food each time. We had the mussels, fish and chips, sautéed prawn tails and beef and Guiness pie. The service is as superb as the food and ambience. Just can't say enough good things about this place!

The Merrion hotel recommended this restaurant and made a last minute reservation for us. It was Friday night and thus very busy. The restaurant had us waiting at the bar for a while but always gave us the feeling they hadn't forgotten about us. The food was simply delicious - crab, mussels, prawns and John Dorey - all that with a good Sauvignon Blanc. The place was buzzing and had a great atmosphere to it. If i had one evening in Dublin, this is where i would go.
