My husband and I signed up to meet with our ambassador at 5pm on the day we arrived in Dublin. Our flight got in at 7:30am and it was a long day but that's how you beat the jet lag, you just gotta keep going. It turned out our ambassador was Simon O'Connor, one of the originators of the program. He gave us 3 options to chose between, tea at a posh hotel, coffee at a cafe, or pint at a pub, and we went with pint. On the walk over, he immediately started to giving us the native's perspective on Dublin pointing on what bars to avoid (as "too fratty") and where we could get a good meal (explore the side street surrounding the Grafton St. area). When we got to the pub, he spent about an hour chatting with us, providing some good ideas on what to do while in town, and just being generally Irish in the best possible way. In my opinion, the most enjoyable aspects of Ireland have always been the countryside (make sure you get out of Dublin) and the people and spending time with Simon gave us that awesome dose of Irish people time. Overall, a great way to start a trip in Ireland.
