“Good location, too noisy to sleep”
Reviewed 22 May 2014 via mobile

We just came back from our weekend break, hotel location is good. Central location, close to everything. Rooms are ok, bit run down but you only sleep there. What I meant about sleep is if you can. Our room was at the front side of the hotel, it was so noisy we didn't get a sleep until last drunken person left. If you book try to ask for a room on different side of the hotel. For a 2nd night we went to get a ear plugs, this has helped.just incredible to have a bar at the front of the hotel. Breakfast was nice, good choice, I mean it is ok for a weekend break. Sheets hasn't been changed, only towels. It was our first time in Dublin and we really liked friendliness of the Irish people, amazing. We took the Dublin green bus hop in, hop out, which is great way to see all sightseeing places. Most of the museums are free, plenty of nice places to explore, especially Fenix park.

WOULD LIKE TO THINK THE CAPITAL GROUP OF HOTELS READ THIS AND TAKE ACTION/COMMENT - WILL WAIT AND SEE???
We were a party of 10 relatives from UK & USA meeting up for a family party so the location was perfect for us all and I would say this is the hotels only saving grace hence the star rating. The surrounding area of the hotel is also great with lovely little restaurants and the most AMAZING FRIENDLY PETERS PUB bar across the road.
Hotel is above a late bar/nightclub and luckily the noise didn't bother us at all as we had a room at the back. Some rooms were fine but others left a great deal to be desired. We had room 504, fine except for the dirty bedrunner (I previously worked for the Company that makes them and I know they are still available - superking size about 40 euros = GET SOME NEW ONES - FIRST IMPRESSIONS COUNT!!) we had matching bed side lamps and a desk lamp, good hairdryer in the bedroom drawer and very comfortable bed but others in our party did not have the same luck - not enough room lamps making the rooms very dark, no hairdryer and again the same dirty washed out bedrunner. Bathroom very small/adequate but the tacky soap dispensers attached to the wall by the sink and above the bath make it look like a hostel. In the morning Housekeeping made the bed but did not empty the bedroom bins or take away used glasses etc -TRAINING NEEDED???
Breakfast was poor, plenty of bacon, sausage, eggs and baked beans etc. but no mushrooms or fresh tomato - fruit choice was tinned peaches! no yogurt left on monday morning?? Breakfast is served in the dark and dingy "break for the border" restaurant - totally nasty tables with holes gouged out, no cloths or tablemats - not hygenic! my advice is don't bother with the breakfast as there are plenty of lovely little places around which do better.

Several reviews have mentioned the attitude of the staff - I can say that without exception we could not find fault, they were the most friendly and helpful and in particular STEPHANIE on the front desk is a total star.

Our first visit to this hotel was 18 years ago and the fittings/furniture - including all the cowboy/indian theme looked good then but now it just looks shabby, out of date and totally unloved!! The hotel needs taking over by a group who will put some LOVE back into it, ditch the "break for the border" theme and open a contemporary bar/restaurant that would enhance the hotel and provide a place with atmosphere to eat breakfast/afternoon tea/evening dinner etc.

so to sum up - LOCATION & STAFF are 5* but the hotel itself is a low 3*

Room Tip: 5th floor at the back - 504 good but bathroom the size of a shoe box

We were right in the middle of town which for location was excellent. The first day we arrived we couldn't get into our rooms for they were still cleaning them. As we got settled into our rooms
we found there wasn't any water, so we were all ready to find a different hotel.

The water issue was fixed in an hour or so and I must say the breakfast food was was really good.

It definitely needs some updates.

Location is hard to beat. Everything is nearby including Peter's Pub and Hairy Lemon. The hotel itself, leaves a lot to be desired.

Old, shabby, grotty bathrooms, no amenities, dark wood everywhere, shower curtains, windows all need a thorough clean, begged bothering you for change while you're sat in the courtyard. At nice, the exceedingly classy Break for the Border bar/club which is underneath the hotel (and shares the entrance) is on late and loud.

Beds very comfy, and lovely sheets. Other than that...

Wifi only works on the first floor. Which is shocking in itself. What's worse is that it hardly works at all. Certainly not enough to skype/FaceTime.

Breakfast usual basic fried fare. Continental was sliced yellowy cheese and ham. Cereal. No fruit, no yoghurt.

All in all, I think there's much better alternatives. We certainly won't be returning.

First I thought it couldn't be that bad. I think this hotel is well maintained but they can't beat time... Everything is old and run down. No internet at all. No continental European sockets (they provide an adapter but still!). No constant water pressure. No constant electricity. Uncomfortable bed. Noisy rooms even on the 5th floor even in case of closed windows.

The positive sides: the staff was very kind and nice and they try everything to offset the things I mentioned above. It has a good location although its relative of course.

I was thinking a lot on that review because "poor" means that I would not recommend to stay there, although there is something lovely in that place. Still, there are too much negative things.

Room Tip: Ask for the 5th floor it is still the quietest.

Stayed here for one night. Positive was that it is central. Negatives - too many to mention. No Central light in the rooms - just one scruffy bedside table lamp. Laundry and rubbish in the corridors at 4pm.

No wifi in the room - just in a very scruffy lounge. Asked for a coffee and was given a pot of hot water and a sachet of Nescafé - although it was free, not what I expected!

No shampoo in the bathroom - only one liquid soap container bolted to the wall by the shower. Not much use if you are having a bath! You have to stand up and could kill yourself if you slip.

The hotel is tired, run down and everything needs to be updated - dirty carpet, creaking lift, scratched doors, cupboards and wardrobes.

Very noisy - double glazing is a joke - the pub opposite, the Hairy Lemon was noisy until 3 or 4 am so hardly got any sleep and then at 5 the street cleaners moved in. Don't stay there - there must be better choices in Dublin. I was on business and let a colleague book it. Never again!

Room Tip: Choose another hotel!

Stayed for 2 nights for a trip to Dublin! On arrival there was a bit of confusion about payment but it was sorted eventually! Very dated, grubby and poorly lit rooms! The hotel needs a complete refurbishment as the rooms were extremely grubby! Old stains on wooden tables, broken lamp shade, dirty bathroom! However the bed was clean and comfy and the food was good! Very close to Grafton street and other places! Would recommend if you're not too fussy!
