Maldron Hotel Smithfield

Reviewed 17 October 2012

I'm a regular business traveller to Dublin and frequently stay at the Maldron Smithfield. The hotel is located right on Smithfield Square, next to the LUAS and opposite the Jameson Distillery. It is between the Four Courts and the Criminal Courts at parkgate Street, so if you're in the legal field the location couldn't be better as it's an easy walk to either.

The staff are extremely friendly and accomodating and have helped me in the past with early check in or late checkouts if I have needed them.

There is a car park in the basement that charges a flat fee per 24 hour period and you're so close to the LUAS and buses you won't need your car. it's a ten minute walk from Temple bar if you go out in the evening for dinner/drinks but as with every big city, be careful about walking home alone (this is NOT a Dublin problem - it's a big city problem!)

Breakfast is standard fare but the one thing I like about it is that they will cook your eggs any style to order whilst you help yourself to the rest of the buffet.

Rooms are modern and bright and always clean, as are the hallways and reception area. The restaurant menu hasn't tempted me in for dinner yet, but room service is good quality and hot.

There is a superb deli/grocery/coffee shop/wine shop called "Fresh" right nest to the hotel. A perfect place for lunch, snacks or any personal items you need (toiletries etc). Their salad bar is divine.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking Smithfield Square on an upper floor. You will have a great view of The S...

Dear PariciaIRL,

Thank you so much for your positive review on tripadvisor and your continued custom.

The entire team was delighted to hear you enjoy your stays and find the staff so accommodating and friendly and the rooms to be so clean.

I agree our location is an ideal base for seeing Dublin. We are a centrally located hotel within walking distance to many of Dublin’s main attractions as well having the luas on our doorstep.

Thank you once again for such a positive review and both the team and I look forward to welcoming you back to Dublin in the near future.

Kind Regards

Ann Marie Traynor

A good quality centrally located hotel which is functional, clean and comfortable. The staff were polite and efficient and it served are purposes well. If your out and about and just need a central base to stay this is perfect, however the hotel lacked any atmosphere which wasn't an issue for me because I was there on business not pleasure. The breakfast again was of average quality nothing special with the widely adopted buffet style format, a minor observation would be that the juice, cereals and fruits were located after the chaffing dishes filled with the cooked items, that didn't seem to flow. Good stay and would use again for business.

We stayed in the Maldron Hotel Smithfield for one night in Oct 2012. Got a great rate of €65 room only on booking.com. No problem finding the place and we were able to park the car in the adjacent car park for €10 for 24 hrs, which was great value for centre of Dublin.

Location excellent, 2 min walk to Smithfield luas stop.

The guy that checked us in was very pleasant and helpful and the check in was very quick and efficient. The room was lovely, very clean and we had a great view of the Smithfield Tower. Only complaint was that the room was very hot and we had no way of turning the heat down.

Bathroom was spotlessly clean and had a double shower which wad very powerful and definitely woke us up!

We were offered breakfast for a special prepaid rate of €8 each which we availed of and was well worth the money. Breakfast was buffet style and there was a great selection of food and the hot food was replenished regularly.

Would definitely return.

Room Tip: High floor with view of Smithfield Tower and city

We arrived early (around 08:00) and our room was not ready until 14:00 so watch this if you arrive on an early flight like us. There’s enough around for you to crack on with the sight-seeing straight away though. The receptionist was helpful and pointed us in the right direction and gave us a few maps to helps us on our way.

The hotel itself is about a 10-15 minute walk to Ha’Penny Bridge and Temple Bar which isn’t far at all and is situated in a good location for the Jameson Distillery and some of the shopping centres (Jervis and Parnell St.)

The room was clean and comfy and a good 4* hotel in my opinion. The room was not air conditioned and did get hot during our stay with no ability to control the heating but we opened the window and that brought the temperature down no end. Shower gel and shampoo are provided in the bathroom along with a trouser press and hairdryer in the room. A good night’s sleep was had with being outside of all the hustle and bustle of the main centre.

Room service was good with a “Collect and Grab” service where you have to go to the restaurant to collect the food but this obviously saves on the extra charges you usually find in most hotels. Wasn’t overpriced and a good selection on the menu. The service from the bar/restaurant staff was exceptional at all times; really friendly guys and nothing was ever too much.

I would certainly stop here again and recommend it to anyone that’s happy to pay a little less and prepared to walk a little further to the main attractions of Dublin.

First and foremost, it is extremely important for any potential guest to remember that this is Ireland and not the US. Some negative remarks about many hotels about the need for updating is pretentious as almost all buildings in Ireland are old and this is their way of life in general. Do not compare to US hotels. With that being said, buy the special adapter before your trip, which is needed to plug in your electronics. Outlets are different, hot and cold faucets are reversed, etc.

Staff is pleasant and very accommodating. Scale to weigh luggage in the lobby for your convenience along with a big board to electronically find out weather where you are going, back home, etc. The hotel is clean and well kept. They have wifi in the lobby and restaurant, but not in the rooms. They do not have a pen and paper in the room to leave housekeeping a note so I took it upon myself to go to the front desk each morning to report what we needed. Due to high costs of everything over there, I made sure to tell them not to change the sheets and was very respectful of their utilities. There was only one day where directions of how many towels, fix a light, etc., were not followed. At the time of instructing the person at the front desk, it did not appear he wanted to pass on any message as I had to ask him to write down our requests twice. It wasn't until I spoke of the third item that he finally took out a pen. Based on my observations, I don't think he passed on the information, because other requests to other desk staff were completed by housekeeping on other days.

There were some areas that could use a good washing like on the lampshades and walls, but over all, definitely a good place to stay. Carry your room key at all times. It is needed to go to your floor in the elevator. Obviously, you need it to get in the room, but it is also needed to turn on electricity and keep it on while in the room.

FYI, most hotels in Ireland do NOT have air conditioning due to their climate. It doesn't get hot enough to really warrant AC. Opening a window worked out just fine for us.

I traveled with my sister and mother. The hotel was very accommodating by making sure we had 3 separate beds in our room. They have coffee, tea, hair dryer, milk, sugar, shampoo/body wash, iron and TV. Look for Vlad, the manager, as he is a very pleasant person, attentive, helpful, etc. He was at the desk one moment and bar tender the next moment. It was rather comical!

The restaurant was good, clean and well kept. The food was definitely my favorite out of all the places we ate across the country. Full breakfast and the same as every place else for the most part, which is good, but the dinners were great! The bruschetta was phenominal. Ask for Ruth! Such an incredibly sweet, attentive young woman. Jordan is extremely nice and attentive, too. On the days we were there, we had more interaction with Ruth as she was the only person there the first couple of nights. Our first night, we were looking for someone to help us get a drink at the bar. Their dining did not open till 6 and it was 5:30. Ruth walked in and immediately put her stuff down to take care of us right away. We told her to do what she needed to first, but she insisted on getting us settled first. She wasn't supposed to be on the clock at that time, either. Incredibly nice person, hard worker and eager to assist with constantly checking on everyone to see if they needed anything.

Would definitely go back!

We had a great experience at the Maldron recently, having stayed for 2 days in Dublin during Sept. 2012. Vlad, the concierge, was very helpful in letting us use the phone to sort out our rental car, as well as giving us maps and take away menus galore. Would definitely stay here again if in Dublin!

We were at this hotel for two nights, and they went above and beyond to help us. There was a mixup with the online system and our room was booked for the following year. They gave us a discount on the room as an apology and found space for us even though Lady Gaga was in town (which booked up almost all of the hotels in the area!). When we were unable to stay all four nights as planned, they called around to find us another place to stay, and offered that we could keep our luggage there.

The room was quite nice as well. We had a double bed and a twin bed since there were three of us (one couple and a friend). There was free Wi-Fi downstairs, and free wired internet in the room, with one ethernet cable. Everything was clean. The building felt secure as well, since you had to have a room key to go anywhere in the elevator. The hotel is centrally located in Smithfield, which is a tiny walk away from Dublin City Center, right next to a grocery store, and the Jameson Distillery. Would definitely stay there again in Dublin!!
