Attraction details
Owner description: The Merry Ploughboy is the only pub in Ireland owned and managed by musicians, and it is the 'hands on' approach from the owners that makes a visit to the Merry Ploughboy the highlight of many people's trip to Ireland. The two hour Irish music & Irish dancing show (which takes place nightly at the pub) has been awarded "Best Dinner/Entertainment Event in Ireland" and the pub is the current "Music Pub of the Year" in Ireland. Owners and musicians, The Merry Ploughboys, have been performing together for 25 years making their show the longest running show in Ireland hosted continuously by the same performers. The pub is located about 20 minutes south of Dublin City centre with complimentary car parking. It is easily accessed by taxi or if you are staying in the city centre we recommend our shuttle transfer service (just 7.50 euro return fare). The transfer by luxury executive coach offers an elevated view of the scenic Southside of Dublin city. After the show, the coach will drop you back as close as practical to your accommodation. Reservations are essential, however online bookings for the dinner & show (and shuttle transfer if required) can be made in real-time on our own website. We operate a "ticketless" booking system. You will receive a unique booking reference number on your email receipt and our floor manager will have all your details when you arrive at the pub.

“Noisy rude audience”
Reviewed 16 July 2014

This is a nice pub out near the base of the Wicklow mountains. We opted to include the taxi pick up service for an extra charge. This was a good value. The 3 course dinner was surprising good and hot serving 100s of people. Our servers were efficient and friendly. The venue was way too hot and stuffy. I guess they were accommodating all the elderly that attended. On that note, this was by far the rudest and noisiest audience I have ever encountered. People constantly standing in front of us taking pictures and movies and having to ask many times to sit down. So much chatter during the performance it made it difficult to hear the musicians telling stories and singing. Maybe a suggestion is to make an announcement to not block someone's view and not talk during the performance. The took away from our overall experience!!! The music was excellent but do away with the cheesy Irish dancers. It was painful to watch them off sync and more like a high school dance recital. The dancers seem to cheapen the effect of an authentic evening.

Dear reviewer, thanks for your positive feedback about the music and food. We were disappointed to hear that anything would have taken away from your overall experience of the night with us. It is quite unusual that an audience continue to chat during the performance or obstruct other peoples view. The group in question were non-english speaking and we would agree with you that their behaviour was very inconsiderate of those around them once the entertainment commenced. It certainly makes it more difficult for us on stage as well. We'll bring your experience to the attention of the floor manager to keep a closer watch for this.

The day in question was the second hottest of the year in Ireland this year. As it happens, we have just recently installed an air conditioning system for the room and we are still tweaking the optimal operation of this based on a full house and a particularly hot night, so that’s something we expect to improve in the very near future. In addition it makes life easier for us on stage!

I was surprised to hear that you didn’t enjoy the dancing part of the night. They are certainly “in sync” on a usual night and generally speaking their performance goes down very well with the audience. We will certainly pass on your feedback to the choreographer of the dancing show and establish whether there was a particular issue on the night. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your
time in Dublin and hope to see you back at the Merry Ploughboy if you are back in Dublin in the future.

“Great food and music”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

We had a great time at the Merry Ploughboy dinner show. We were pleasantly surprised at how good the food was here. The show itself was wonderful and the service was excellent.

“Fabulous Irish Music and Food”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

Wonderful overall Irish experience. The music was the best part - talented musicians playing a great mix of songs. Gotta love microphone stands with drink holders to keep their pints of Guinness handy! The pub is outside of Dublin a bit, so when we booked our tickets we also booked the transportation since we did not have a rental car. This worked out great and I would recommend going this route - who wants to drive 20-30 minutes back into the city after dinner and drinks! The venue for the show is upstairs and is bigger than I expected - this is not a typical small pub with a handful of tables and live music. It is set up for good sized groups (think 100), but it works really well. The tables are all longer banquet style and most people will end up sharing a table with people not in their group (unless you come with a tour bus, which happens). We got to meet some new people and that was a fun part of the experience. The food was better than I expected - thought it would be more basic pub food, but it was a notch up from that. Our service was good, although they did get a little behind on drink orders, but I just went to the bar and got another pint. Price of admission includes show and dinner, but no Guinness or other drinks except water. The music show was awesome and the dancers were good - not the best we have seen but plenty entertaining and fun when they got people up to dance with them. This is a hit that I would not miss on a trip to Dublin. My 9 year old really liked it and thought the dancers were great. A really good way to spend an evening.

“A great evening will be had by all!”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

Although the price may seem a bit high for dinner and a show, it but it really isn't given the quality of the food and this is definitely the best place to go for an evening of Irish music, dance and humor. It is pretty dang hard not to have a smile on your face when you leave. If you are staying in Dublin proper, the tour bus option is the way. Only negative is that the rows of tables are so close together that the wait staff is literally squeezing down the narrow aisles all night.

“very entertaining evening”
Reviewed 2 July 2014

This was a very pleasant surprise. We had spent a few nights at various pubs in Temple Bar listening to music and wondered whether this would be as good. It turned out to be a lot of fun. The target audience seemed to be tour groups and there were at least 200 people in the audience. From the very start, it is clear that the Merry Ploughboy is well run and knows how to provide a good time. The food and service were very good which is difficult for groups of this size. At times, watching the wait staff was hectic as they made sure everyone was served and maneuvered around the very long tables filling the room. Based upon the pictures, the Merry Ploughboy group rotates some of the musicians but our show was excellent. The only shortcoming for me was that the stage was not raised enough to see the Irish dancers feet.
