We stayed in the two cottages and the main house with our large group of 20. Our overall impression is the grounds are magnificent and well kept, with the exception of the tennis court which had so much moss on it it was dangerous to play. This was surprising to us as we had told the owner we slected her location based on the fact it had a tennis court. The net was ripped and falling off. They did come and spend the day cleaning the court after our strong urging, but did not fix the net.
We also made it quite clear we would need internet and were told there was wi-fi available. Our young people had to convince the owner to let them move the router closer to the window in the private quarters so we could get a signal. (it doesnt register through thick castle walls) And after that, it turned out we could only get a signal when crowding around a small window in the upstairs kitchen. The first few days it was only on 9-5!
We were never allowed into the castle itself, so I cannot comment on that area.
The main house and two cottages were not clean. There was a lot of dust and 4-5 dead flower arrangements left over from the previous rental. The garbage from the previous rental was stacked in the courtyard entry way until Monday.
There is no cleaning during the week, we had to press the housekeeper to give us new towels, empty the room garbage and give us more TP! That also means the floors, rugs and staircases remained littered with grass from our wet shoes (it rains alot in Ireland) the entire week. Our fault? Maybe. We didn't ask if housekeeping was included in the rental, we just thought it would be?
The sheer curtains all over the house were dirty and were filled with dead bugs. The bedding was moldy, a good outdoor shake would have helped. The lamp shades in our room were shredded on the inside. The rugs could use a good work over with the best dyson vacuum.
The billiards room was a mess, dirty from the start with the broken racquets and other various outdoor toys trashed in a corner.
The pool had a lot of junk in the room, like someone was living in there, leaving their suits, shoes, and other misc junk. It didn't look clean enough to swim.
We all got lots of bites. We debated if they were midges? Small 'no see-ems" that fly around outside/inside, like misquitos. Really itchy and long lasting. Bring lots of repellant.
The owner was a crab and quite defensive. She did end up working with us on the courts and the internet, to her credit. She left the country on the 3rd day of our stay and her housekeeper was very hard to contact and not very nice.
My overall opinion is this place could be great, but it needs good management and a good cleaning up.
