Myself and my partner just spent two nights here at The Ardilaun and we were disappointed overall.

We had requested some weeks prior to arrival that we would prefer an early check in as we were travelling from afar but when we arrived at reception this wasn't possible which was understandable. The young Irish gentleman at reception was very welcoming and friendly. We returned later to check in and a female receptionist didn't show as much warmth- it felt as if she was giving a scripted "thank you sir" etc. Service makes an impact when you feel like the person talking to you actually cares. The room (339) was very spacious and clean- no faults there.

We had soup at the bar and it was tasteless as was the bread- we overheard the couple beside us say the same so we weren't alone. The waitress didn't go out of her way to be pleasant either. We decided to try the bar again in the evening for a toasted sandwich and some fries but to my shock, the waitress said this wasn't possible as they would only serve the set menu which included no sandwiches. We then had to change our plans and drive to Salthill in search for food- we were not impressed. Later that night we read in one of the information leaflets that the chefs were more than happy to cater for customers' needs- clearly not. To add insult to injury we learned sandwiches were available 24 hours from room service- just not in the bar.

Breakfast on both mornings was faultless and the gentleman who greeted us was very pleasant on both occasions. The buffet was delicious. On our last night we had room service and again it disappointed. There was items missing from our order- small things but they add up- and the side salad was bone dry with no dressing.

The most friendly encounter we had was at check out when a young receptionist gave us vouchers for one of the select hotels. Overall for a 4 star hotel, the Ardilaun disappointed and I don't think I would return again.

Room Tip: From passing by rooms on the 3rd floor (320+) seem much more modern and bigger.

Dear Holidayathome2011,

Firstly thank you for taking the time to speak with me the other day regarding your stay with us at The Ardilaun and explaining clearly to me the issues with which you were diappointed . At all times the quality of food and service should be of the highest standard. A simple sandwich is and should be available at all times. This should not have been refused and cause you the inconvenience of leaving the hotel. My apologies for this.

Thank you for your kind comments regarding your room and breakfast.

I do thank you for you feedback and comments. As is said to you I would be more than happy to meet with you on your return to THe Ardailun if you so wish and do look forward to welcoming you back to the hotel.

Best wishes, THe Ardilaun Team

Arrived friday afternoon, having already booked and (paid) for a late check out, i was told there was no record of it, i showed them the confirmation email on my phone and they went rooting for it in the back, they came back and said oh sorry we never processed it etc etc so i had to pay for it again (although the original payment was never put through).

The building is nice, and the bar is very good, we got to the room and were shocked by the out dated contents, the bathroom door handle didn't work, the bath and shower were about 20 years old, the bed clothes and curtains were also about 20 years old and the bed was very uncomfortable, the T.V. was a 1990's phillips, and the atmosphere the room projected was one of sadness rather than happiness or excitement.

My girlfriend cut her finger on the bathroom door lock because it was stiff and sharp and when we tried to have a shower we couldn't because it was either boiling hot or freezing cold, also the shower then dripped for the remainder of the trip and get us awake at night until i wrapped towels around it.

Saturday we went for about a 10K walk and when we returned neither of our keycards worked, we went down to reception and got new ones. Again my girlfriend cut her finger in the same place, pretty bad this time, we decided we'd get breakfast brought to us in the morning and filled out the form.

It's €5 each to have it delivered, we circled 9:30 for the time as it was the latest option and in the morning the door was knocked down at 9:05, very annoying, then when we sat down to have breakfast the boiled eggs were green (over cooked) the toast was cold and dry and the orange juice was heavily watered down.

Sunday morning we were leaving (thank god) and my girlfriend went for a shower while i went down to have a cigarette (They have no heating smoking areas either for the night time) and when i came back my keycard wouldn't work AGAIN! only for the fact that my girlfriend actually couldn't have a shower she was there to let me in.

Overall it was very very poor, and shocking for a 4-star hotel, we were delighted to be leaving and in the taxi to the train station the taxi man asked how our stay was so we told him and he said in the 20+years i've been here thats the first time anyone has said anything bad about it.

My thoughts are that the Ardilaun has a certain demographic and they accept the problems with the hotel so the Ardilaun will never change.

In mid February my wife and myself stayed at The Ardilaun for a three day break. It had been several years since I had stayed here before and it was because of previous experience that I decided to visit this time,
To my surprise when I walked into the Reception I received an amazing welcome from the three Receptionists, all of whom had remembered me. It was a great to receive such a warm welcome. As I checked in they upgraded our room to a Premium Room.
When we got to our room it was a revelation. It was nothing less than sumptuous. the bed was huge and so comfortable. We had a dressing area and a beautiful double bathroom. The bathroom was equipped with ample soft towels and quality soaps, shampoos and conditioners.
We had excellent tea & coffee facilities and a good fridge.
Breakfast while buffet style had a huge selection of cereals, cold meats and cheeses, fruit, breads, croissants, pastries and preserves. Similarly, the cooked selection was fantastic and was all piping hot. Teas and coffees were served to our table with copious amounts of hot toast.
We had dinner on our second evening in the Restaurant. It was a five course marathon. We were offered the extensive Al a Carté Menu. Our starters of Pulled Pork Pancake Rolls were so full of flavour and delicate. We followed these with excellent Chowder and Tomato and Basil Soup. Our Mains were Breast of Turkey which was so succulent and Chicken and Ham Roulade again just perfect. Both came with seasonal vegetables and a selection of potatoes. We finished with an excellent Cheese Board of a good selection of Irish Cheeses and Biscuits, and coffees. The whole dinner experience was exquisite. The food, wine and the service was flawless, a treasure to behold.
On one of the days we had a late lunch in the Blazers Bar, again this was first class too. Well presented wholesome sandwiches and excellent coffee.
Another gem at The Ardilaun is th Leisure Club. Everyday we enjoyed the fantastic facilities, the Pool, Jacuzzi, Sauna and Steam Room. We never quite rose to the Gym. My wife did avail of the services of The Beauty Salon for a manicure which she reported as first class.
I can't recommend The Ardilaun enough. It has to be one of the most professionally run hotels I have ever stayed in. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff and all is done with a smile. From the warm reception at the Front Desk through the staff in the Restaurant and the Bar you get the feeling that they a delighted you are there and they want to do whatever it take to make your stay an experience.

Room Tip: The Premium Rooms are to behold.

The Ardilaun is about a five minute walk away from the main tourist area of Galway. It's location is beautiful and secluded and well worth the effort of going away from the main drag.We visited for lunch. From entering and parking the car the whole experience was excellent. Lunch was served in the bar. There was table service and a good menu choice. We kept it simple with the house burger which was served with a very tasty salad relish and chips, a club sandwich which again was done to perfection and a main of turkey breast with beautiful fresh vegetables and new potatoes. There was one dessert of fresh fruit salad which was tastefully presented and excellent. This was finished with tea and coffee all very good. The only slight reservation I would have is that this hotel is a little sedate and may not be for those who would like a lively exciting venue. It more than suited our needs and the service was very pleasant.

My husband has certainly added to his waistline after a fabulous stay. We were attending a dinner dance and the food was superb. Added to that seconds were offered and my husband took full advantage. The room was very clean and to a very high standard. Reception staff were very helpful. I would definitely stay again.

We stayed here for 2 nights with a 'grabone' deal. It was 2 nights B&B with one afternoon tea. We had booked the afternoon tea for a certain time, but unfortunately we were delayed on our journey & over an hour late arriving. Thankfully, the lovely lady on reception accommodated us & we had a lovely afternoon tea just after checking in.

The hotel is nice, albeit a bit dated. The room was ok, a little small, and a little dated, but clean. Bedding is a little on the light side, not duvets, just very light blankets. But there are spare blankets and spare pillows in the wardrobe, so we didn't get cold! Breakfast is fine, but basic enough.
We had a nice relaxing weekend here, and would stay again as it is good value.
