“Basic B&B”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 June 2014

Carmel is a sweetheart of a woman running a basic B&B. The whole place has an appealing faded gentility, much like your grandmother's house. The twin room was clean, bright, airy...and a bit small. Beds were fine and linens above average. The bathroom was itsy bitsy. Wifi was great. Breakfast is average--no fresh produce, but there is canned fruit available. Service was super fast! The house is a pleasant 10-minute walk right into Galway, and not even five minutes onto the Salthill promenade. It's about 15 minutes walking to the bus station. There is a lot of road noise at all times, though of course it is less at night. Carmel told us how to arrange a pickup right across the street from the bus company to go out to Inishmor, which was super convenient. She stored our luggage while we were out in Galway all day before our bus to Dublin, too. She couldn't be nicer!

Room Tip: I think the road noise is present in all rooms, sadly.

I showed madly later than the 4 p.m. arrival time that the travel agency had printed on my voucher (one factor: Whitestrand Avenue is distinct from the longer Whitestrand Road. I was within sight of the place three times before that registered). Mrs. O'Halloran said she had given up on me, but welcomed the truant. Asked about a internet café open at that hour, she urged me to the kitchen laptop to send home an overdue in-Galway-doing-fine e-mail. The view south-southwest from my comfortable room took in a bit of the bay, to which an easy walk gave a mesmerizing view of moonlight on the water and the dark outline of the Burren heights. A downpour before breakfast was followed by the great arc of a rainbow. The fine breakfast was accompanied by a Celtic CD playing; the better accompaniment was Mrs. O'Halloran and the cook conversing in Irish in the kitchen.

The breakfast was delicious and served in a very lovely room. The owners were very nice and helpful and our room was very nice and well equiped and the bed was very comfortable.
We enjoyed very much our stay at Roncalli House.

We unfortunately arrived late, but the owners were very nice and understanding. The room was clean and spacious. We were given great recommendations for dinner in the promenade area. Breakfast was very good. It's about a 10 minute walk to Quay Street. Great location.

Looking for accommodations in Galway during an unplanned visit, we were fortunate enough to come across Roncalli House. It is located within walking distance to town centre, on the corner of a major road. Mrs. O'Halloran was very nice and extended many little courtesies to us. The rooms are older but clean and pleasant, and her price for bed and breakfast is very reasonable for being so close to Galway town centre. The next time we come back to Galway, we would stay here again.

Every trip to Ireland should include a trip to Galway. And other than my first trip to Galway, Roncalli House is where we stay. Carmel and Ann are wonderful and the home is just a quick walk to the center city where hotel lodgings are very pricey and can be subject to city noise. The breakfast is very good and a past B&B contest winner.

We stayed in the same room that Chelsea Clinton stayed in! This was by far the most comfortable B&B we stayed in. The bed was so comfy! Carmel was wonderful. And our view was beautiful.
We walked down to Quay Street (which was an easy walk from the B&B), and enjoyed the night life.
Breakfast was served in a sunny room overlooking her garden.
Thank you for the lovely visit :)
