“Brunch”

Popped in and we both enjoyed a quick brunch after a recommendation. Pot of tea was excellent, full Irish & healthy alternative hit the spot nicely. Queue on stairs, but don't let it put you off!

“Excellent”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

Simple visit for something quick, late afternoon early evening. We went for the charcuterie plate to share and a bottle of Malbec. The meats and pates were fab and the recommended wine was spot on. Only complaint was the original wine selection was out of stock and not known by by the waitress, but the recomended alternative was excellent. Extra bread was provided quickly without fuss.

“Always worth it!”
Reviewed 22 June 2014

McCambridge's is a little café/restaurant on the first floor of the delicatessen shop of the same name in Galway's busy Shop Street. The shop alone is worth a visit; albeit rather pricey, they have international specialities and a lovely range of fresh products such as antipasti, cheese and meats. There is a small coffee bar in the shop, and a flight of stairs leads up to the café. If there's a queue, don't be shocked out of waiting! The queue normally moves quickly, and the lovely service and gorgeous food make more than up for a 10 to 20 minute wait.

One thing in advance though: As the choice and quality of the food and beverages is above average here, so are the prices. If you're looking for a sloppy standard sandwich with ingredients of unclear origin for €2.50, don't come here.

We come here often, and I don't think I have ever encountered a place with such continuously fantastic service. The young staff are always around, attentive, helpful with the menu and super-friendly.
Just yesterday, my boyfriend asked me if I would like some hot milk for my coffee, and I said not to bother, but the waitress overheard this and told me she would get me some. She was lovely!
The food is exquisite. We normally come for breakfast, lunch or in the afternoon, and the menu always offers great food.
No matter if you are just in the shop or if you eat upstairs, TRY THE HUMMUS! (and all the other antipasti while you're at it, they're to die for)
If you like a full fry-up in the (late) morning, I had the veggie breakfast a while ago and it came with toast, fried mixed mushrooms instead of the boring watery mushroom portion you often get, a huge fried tomato on the vine with a lovely flavour, a little ramekin of the aforementioned hummus (yum yum!), two eggs made to your choice, and instead of hash browns it came with potato farl (kind of a potato dough pita bread, try it with butter!). Not your standard fry-up fare, and yet just as homely, not to mention the great quality.

Yesterday we had a slice of the always fresh and changing range of cakes on display by the counter (sour cherry and frangipane), and even though I was admittedly first taken aback by the price (€4.50), we shared one slice of cake and it was more than enough! (so actually, you can get a fair share of cake for €2.25). Don't miss out on the coffee, it's a treat, and check out their unusual drinks with bubbly and fruity syrup. My secret seasonal favourite: Lavender lemonade, with or without gin. Made with homemade lavender syrup and real lavender blossoms. Chew one while you sip the drink - it's stunning! (May not be on the special's menu - ask for it!)

As for the atmosphere, it is always busy and seating quite narrow in some parts, but once you sit at your table, you feel at ease and the interior is friendly and nicely decorated. If you're a tourist, try to get a table by the window overlooking Shop Street. In general, I prefer to sit on one of the benches by the walls.

Random observation: while the (unisex) toilets may sometimes be a bit below standard in terms of overflowing paper bins and such because the staff are running their legs off serving the customers, they're always cleaned and I can't help but love the way they're decorated, very stylish with nice wallpaper and in cream and green tiles, like a country home (and I fully admit this doesn't contribute much to the actual review).

In a nutshell: If you've got an hour to spare and want above-average coffee, food and service in a nice atmosphere, don't miss out on this family-run gem in the heart of Galway.

“Excellent food and very good price”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

We have been here a few times and it has never disappointed. We got a seat upstairs at lunch time. The staff are very efficient. They remembered everything, and never left us waiting too long for anything. The menu is a nice change to the usual café grub. We had the meat plater, tuna salad with hummos and bread. We treated ourselves to the white wine of the month. Good value at 13.95euro. A very pleasant meal. We went all out for coffees and a little cake. Great value at €45 total. Would recommend to anyone

“Really nice”
Reviewed 6 June 2014

Recent trip to galway and stopped in originally for a cake and coffee which ended up being lunch and a glass of wine after seeing the menu. Gorgeous food, excellent price wise, great wine on special. Staff could have been a bit more on the ball in terms of getting the table cleared etc, but it was that time between lunch and dinner service so understandably a lil slow. Overall was lovely and totally set us up for the day. Would definitely recommend.
