The Castle of Athenry was a Norman construction of the 12th and 13th centuries. Some of the structure is 15th century and later. The entrance was at first floor level. The castle has been renovated and sits in its own walled courtyard, which forms an angle of the mediaeval town walls which surrounded the early township of Athenry. It is owned by the O.P.W. and has a guided tour and audio-visual display and seated theater on the 1st floor. It is worth a visit although it is not yet fully furnished, when fully fitted out it will be really great.
