“Cozy and hospitable”
Reviewed 15 April 2012

I stayed at Ash Grove House with my parents for two nights in early April 2012. The B&B is about a 10 minute walk from the main area of Galway that has all the shops, pubs, etc. The rooms were cozy and clean and there is a hearty full Irish breakfast included. We enjoyed staying here. The only slight problem was that there was not enough off street parking for all the guests that were there so we had to do a little bit of car shuffling, but it worked out. Would recommend, especially if you have a smaller budget.

Been meaning to write this for a while now, had a great stay at Ash Grove Guest House, lovely comfy room with a comfortable bed & a great breakfast.
Our host Angela was highly attentive from start to finish and really made our stay an enjoyable one.
Had Breakfast on both mornings and would highly recommend it, just a short stroll from all the shops and pubs, will definitely return here.

We have been staying at Ash Grove over the last 10 years whilst visiting our sister in hospital and we are always assured a lovely welcome, a comfy bed and the breakfast sets you up for the whole day! Angela and Lyintie always welcome us with a smile and a chat. This guest house is situated opposite Galway University Hospital and is also within a short walk/bus route into the City Centre. The rooms are cosy and have everything you need and are decorated to a high standard. What we like the best is that they remember your name and even what your preferences are. A very personalised touch. Highly recommend.

As guest houses go if I were to sum up Ash Grove I would say that it is a good value basic guest house in a convenient location for the city centre.

The property was easy to find even if the map and directions on the website could be a little clearer. First impressions were good, the property looked good from the outside, well tended with off-road parking for up to three cars. Beware that if the front is full parking on street even on side streets outside of Galway City Centre is pay and display and not long stay! Having said that we had no trouble finding space for our entire stay in high season.

Once through the front door, opened promptly I might add the good vibes continued, the main public areas are as well kept as the externals. The welcome was good, we were shown to our room almost immediately and were offered a map giving us directions to the City Centre which by the way is only a 10 minute walk.

The room was large and despite having booked a double we had a double bed and a single in the room. The room was minimally furnished with two side tables, a small desk with tea tray and a chair, a built in single wardrobe was also included. The furniture was all in good condition if a little tired in places and the television basic 17" wall mounted CRT.
The room decoration was different although not unexpected, red walls may not be everyones cup of tea, however they were shown on the website and grew on me by the end of our stay. The decoration was also a little tired in placed with some small cracks and chips in paintwork but nothing that would cause undue concern. Despite some minor cosmetic niggles the room was generally good, it was clean, the correct temperature and did everything we needed. The tea tray was nice and we had sufficient tea and coffee for two cups of each, each! However a nice little extra would be a packet of biscuits, not everyone enjoys dry tea!

The bathroom was simple, bath with shower head and screen, toilet and washbasin and benefitted from a skylight giving valuable natural light being in the middle of the building. There were a couple of minor niggles with the bathroom, the lack of an extractor fan meant that hot showers resulted in wet walls and the sealant on the shower screen was in need of a little attention, however it did the job and for a basic B&B what more can you ask?

Moving on to Breakfast I came across a first for me a B&B that requires breakfast to be pre-ordered the night before (prior to 9.30 no less!) Apart from the fact that this meant I was choosing between a 'Full Irish', 'Smoked Salmon and Scrambled Eggs', 'Pancakes' and 'Fresh Fruit' before I'd even had my dinner and so had no idea how hungry I would be, it did not cause too much inconvenience. The breakfast room like the welcome to breakfast each morning was bright and friendly. Once seated we were offered juice, tea and coffee and a choice of cereals and toast before the main event a choice from the four options above. I cannot fault the breakfasts I tried all of the options (except the fruit) and can say that they're all good and filling as you'd expect from an Irish Breakfast. The Full Irish consisted of the usual Bacon, Sausages, Egg, Beans, etc. I would have liked a choice of egg as it came fried and flipped but it's only a minor issue. By far and away the highlight though was the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, there was enough salmon to feed three or four and at least two or three eggs per person! Everything was well cooked and left us set up for the day, not requiring much in the way of lunch.

All in all Ash Grove has got it just about right, 10 minutes walk from the city centre, welcoming hostess, great breakfasts, simple comfortable rooms, free parking and all for only 76 Euros per night per room. Well done!
