“That little bit extra...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 October 2010

I visited the Clayton Hotel in August with my wife, we had a 3 night stay courtesy of a Super Valu break.
Upon arriving to the hotel I was met with a huge smile by the superb receptionist Stephanie. After the usual chit chat and friendly conversation we continued with the check in, Stephanie realised that my wife and I were on a short break without our children and decided that she would upgrade us. Little did we know as we approached our room that we were being upgraded to the Presidential Suite, the best room in the hotel. This was just a fantastic gesture and it started our break perfectly. The room was amazing, with luxurious fixtures & fittings and it was HUGE!
We ate a meal in the restaurant that night and we had no faults at all with the quality. The service was a little questionable, however I put that down to some youthful exuberance amongst the very young waiting staff. Apart from breakfast, this was the only time we ate in the hotel. Breakfast was plentiful and set us up for the day.
On each of our 3 nights we caught the bus outside the hotel and went into Quay Street for the nightlife. The bus was certainly very handy and seemed to be fairly regular.
We had a few drinks in the bar over the course of our stay, staff were friendly and efficient.
Overall, this is a great hotel. We look forward to returning in the future with our 2 girls as we noticed a lot of families staying and thought they all seemed very content in the Clayton.

Stayed at the Clayton for a weekend away recently. Check-in was very efficient and friendly. The room we got was in a link building to the main building and was quite a trek from the reception area. But saying that it was an excellently appointed room; very spacious with lovely furnishings.

On the Friday night we ate in the bar. Although it was very busy with other diners the service was still top notch and the staff very friendly. The food was very good also with generous portions. The only thing I can say is that the music later on that evening would not cater to everyone's tastes and they should look at something more contemporary chillout opposed to the country western approach.

On the saturday night we ate in the restaurant. The service was mediocre here and it seemed like the staff were not particularly interested in being there. The food was very good again but the service wasn't great.

We went into Galway after dinner and we didn't need to even call a taxi as there were a few queued up outside the door which was very convenient. After a fabulous night out in Galway we returned to the hotel residents bar to an absolute shambles. Every local in the surrounding areas was there and they were singing and shouting loudly. Even one of the Managers was taking part singing and drinking with them. If you want a quiet drink after a night out this is not the place and it's obvious by the Manager's actions, that Management don't seem to care. We went to bed highly unimpressed.

Breakfast was not too bad. The buffet selection was good, but the restaurant was just too small to accommodate the volume of traffic dining and the buffet ran out and took some while to replenish.

Checkout was friendly and efficient.

Overall the Clayton is not a bad property; but they need to work on a few things to make it a little better. Until these improvements manifest themselves; we won't be going back.

Dear HotelGuestIreland,

Thank you for mentioning the positive points of your stay with us.

Guest comfort is of the utmost importance to us. I am very dissapointed about the situation that occured in the residents bar. I can assure that it will not be happening again.

I will be contacting you through Tripadvisor so I can discuss the matter with you in person.

The Clayton Hotel is a beautiful hotel with plenty of parking approx 8 mins drive from galway city centre. a taxi costs approx €12 to the centre. alternatively there is a bus outside but it is quite irregular, every 30mins. the rooms are spacious + very clean, restaurant gorgeous ~the staff in the restaurant, george thomas + brian are very professional, friendly + approachable + very helpful + really represent the Clayton hotel so well + give it a great name. however upon check in of the hotel we could have had a totally different view. we were checked in by a young man who's name began with J, he never uttered a word to us only to describe where our room was etc , he was not welcoming or friendly which he should be since he's the first person people see when they arrive at the hotel, he's representing the hotel + its name + frankly he'd give it a bad name~we booked the weekend with axa leisure breaks+so we were entitled to bed + breakfast + 1 evening meal however he said an evening meal was not included in our package, we rang axa + they confirmed we were entitled to a free evening meal with the package we'd booked. Rhoda from the clayton was in touch with me and was most apologetic, friendly + helpful, we had our meal in the end + a bottle of wine compliments of the hotel. stephanie + Rhoda were v helpful regarding this matter. its a good thing we had not listened to the receptionist named J as we may not have got our free meal we were entited to if we hadn't of rang axa to confirm. the hotel is wonderful as are all the staff, its such a shame one person can bring down a whole company + give it a bad name..... id recommend it still

Dear EveDoyle,

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. I was pleased to read that George, Thomas and Brian in the restaurant took good care of you.

I am very sorry about your reception experience. However, I was delighted that Rhoda and Stephanie resolved the matter so well. A training opportunity has been highlighted as a result and we have rectified the matter.

We look forward to seeing you again the next time you are in Galway.

I stayed at the Clayton Hotel last weekend with my husband for our wedding anniversary. On arrival we were upgraded to a suite which was a lovely treat. The room was extremely spacious , clean and comfortable. The bed was very very comfy! We stayed in the hotel bar on Friday night and really enjoyed the music provided, there was a gret atmosphere in there, not like a usual hotel bar at all. On Saturday morning we had a room service breakfast which was really very good, all the hot items were hot which is often not the case with room service. I went for a massage which was excellent my shoulders are still benefitting from it! We ate in the hotel restaurrant Saturday night and really enjoyed our meal, considering we were on a "Super Valu" break I didnt expect the food to be of such a good standard.
I must say that every member of staff we had the pleasure to deal with were so friendly, polite and very welcoming it was a pleasure to see so many nice people working together. The one and only minor complaint I would have, and it really is minor is that the water pressure in the shower wasnt great. But having said that we will definitely be staying in the Clayton the next time we are lucky to stay in Galway( love it!) and will be reccommending the hotel to all of my friends.

Stayed here last week with my Girlfriend for two nights under the axa breaks. We got a good deal for 2 nights B&B with one evening meal included.
We had a little trouble locating the hotel as my sat nav which is only 6 months old could not locate the hotel, As suggestion to the hotel I would encourage the hotel to put some cordinates on their web site so people could key them in and arrive straight to the front door. As the Hotel is just off quite a busy roundabout it is not easy to notice the hotel as you pass by unless it is at night time where the lovely lights take your attention to the Hotel right away.
On checking in we went to our room 318 and were pleased with what we found nice tv great comfortable beb and also a nice well cleaned bathroom with a lovely shower. although we are both in our 30's stepping out and into the bath for a shower wasn't easy i indeed slipped once as i went to get out!!! Older people would have difficulty in accessing the shower i feel.
Down to the fitness room and pool next and it was a real let down. the fitness room is just that a room with 2 treadmills 2 bikes a rowing machine and a cross country ski machine. The pool is also a let down with no jacuzzi or any jets etc... the whole place lacks any atmosphere even a small radio with some music would help create some atmosphere. The pool is also only open at certain times and from our room we had to enetr the lobby area to get to the pool. The attend was a lovely friendly lady.
We decided to have our meal on the first night. This was the biggest let down. The service was awful from the start with the food we got just above average. we seemed to be on a different menu to the bar food which when we saw others getting it looked lovely. Perhaps we would have been better to not have been on a special deal and have been paying for the much nicer bar food !! Our order for the desert was taken form 5 meters away from our table from the Restaurant manager this was what finally drove me to complain.
Cathal the duty manager was moat helpfull when i spoke to him. We were offered a second meal for the next evening but we already had plans and again we were offerd lunch but also had to decline as we were going to connemra for the day. The restaurant manager did come to our room with a bottle of wine and an appology which we accepted. He explained they were under staffed but I told him that wasn't an excuse for poor service slow service yes but not poor service.
On check out we wre again offered lunch but declined again as we had a 3 hour drive home and wanted to get on the road.
Over all lovely hotel very nice staff at reception but pool, fitness room are obviously just an add on to gain a star. I do think we just caught the bistro staff on a bad night as all the previous reviews have been good from other people. Lots of room for improvment needed to call itself 4 star hotel although the foundations are there...

Dear liverbird141,

Thank you for your pointer as regards the sat nav co-ordinates. We will take care of that as quickly as possible. We will also come up with a solution to give the pool and fitness room areas more atmosphere.

Your experience in the Bistro should not have happened. I am terrible sorry about this. I have taken measures to stop this from happening again. I was pleased that efforts were made to try and rectify the sitaution with you and that you found Cathal most helpful.

Thank you for your constructive feedback and I hope you will stay with us again.

I think that most things have already been said, everything was absolutely first class, the entire staff were the most helpful and effiecient of any hotel that we have stayed at. The atmosphere was most hospitable and friendly, the rooms spacious and furnished extremely well, with WiFi being free, television and tea making facilities available. Everything and everywhere were kept spotlessly clean The food was very good, good ingredients, well prepared presented and served. One could go on and on, suffice it to say that we were able to have three nights and days of complete relaxation,at excellent rates, making it even better if that were possible
