“Awesome Place, Perfect location”
Reviewed 15 August 2010

My wie and I just returned from our trip to Ireland and Scotland. We had the 'pleasure' and I mean pleasure, of staying at the Salmon Leap Farm about 11 km outside Killarney. If you are planning a trip to Ireland and want to have a location where you can see numerous places and return at night to a great B & B, then this is the place. You can travel to the Dingle Penninsula or the Ring of Kerry from here. Or if your travels include Cork and Blarney Castle, or to Cobh where many ooffthe Irish Immigrants began their jouy from (Including the last port of call for the Titanic), then this is an easy location to operate from.
Now about the accommmodations. The room was large, the ensuite shower was the best on our travels and the food was delicious to say the least. On our arrival we were greeted with tea and a snack that set the mood for the stay. Sean, his wife and Mother all made sure thaat our stay was absolutely the best. A simple question would be answered above and beyond just a simple answer. There is a common area for guests to enjoy and meet one another. There are also several books in the common area that show the birds, wild flowers, and wildlife that one might encounter while on the farm.
Everything on the farm is eco friendly and well deserving of the environmental award that this B & B have received.
Another thing not to be missed while there if you are interested in Celtic History, is a trip with Sean to the on-site burial grounds dating back to between 600-1200 AD. I had the pleasure of going with Sean and having him explain the importance of this historic site out in the field behind the farm. The short walk with Sean's historic explanation would be worth the stay if nothing else was. It took about a half hour to walk out and back, but was well worth the time. See Sean to arrange a time for this facinating explanation of history. This is truly an AWEME place and when we plan our next trip too Ireland, my wife and I will plan our visit around our stay at Salmon Leap Farm.

What a great destination - fabulous scenery, great accommodation, great hosts - and they are environmentally friendly as well - it was just a bit amusing to see that they have achieved a UK environmental award, and in Kerry of all places - you would think that the Irish would have an irish award.

The farm is a short drive away from Killarney in a very silent and scenic location. The hosts are very friendly and live there with 3 generations.
The rooms are very comfortable with lot of space.
The breakfast is very tasty and the hosts are flexible with special wishes i.e. for vegetarians.

My husband and I stayed two nights at Salmon Leap several years ago. We picked it because we wanted a farm B&B just outside town but still near Killarney and we could not have been happier. Our hosts were charming and gave us a warm Irish welcome with tea and biscuits. The B&B is pretty well appointed and although it is definitely historic and it shows, the rooms have all been updated and renovated and were very comfortable and clean. The breakfasts were very hearty and though there was variety we could not get enough of the traditional Irish breakfasts so we did not stray from the standard fare. Our hosts were helpful in pointing out local interests and we actually remember finding Ross Castle by accident while looking for another attraction and we can recommend not missing Ross Castle it was a guided tour that was very interesting. Killarney overall was extremely fun and friendly town and we did experience traditional Irish music in the pubs during the evening. Though Killarney is a touristy town, the people were very friendly and welcoming. My parents stayed at Salmon Leap 2 years ago as well and had a similarly good experience. I would not hesitate to recommend Salmon Leap as the best place to stay for touring Killarney and you can be sure we'll be back sometime ourselves!

This 300 year-old farmhouse does not show its age. It has had a quality renovation with much attention to detail, such as a skylight in the spacious but windowless bathroom. We never heard other guests in their rooms and this B&B did have most and maybe all of its rooms filled while we were there. Other reviewers have mentioned the cleanliness, the large comfortable bed, the great shower and we completely agree. The setting is beautiful (but then much of County Kerry is gorgeous).

The farm is located well outside Killarney, but this is an advantage if you want a peaceful, quiet night. Weather permitting, a table and chairs await guests on the back patio so they can enjoy the setting. The breakfast was generous and delicious.

We were greeted by Sean, our host, and treated to a pot of tea and biscuits when we arrived. He was very helpful when we asked questions about our itinerary and even steered us to a weather report when we debated on which day to drive to the Dingle Peninsula.

A charming 300 year old farmhouse with lots of atmosphere.

The bedroom was extremely large with a large comfortable bed and generous sized bathroom.

The house was very clean and beautifully furnished.

The breakfast was very generous and very tasty using all local produce.

Sean was the perfect host, quiet and unobtrusive but antcipating your every need.

A quiet location about ten miles from the bustle of Killarney.

  • Liked — The spaciousness of the rooms
