Dirreen House
Ranked #94 of 143 Killarney B&B and Inns
Reviewed 19 June 2012

It is often difficult to dislodge the chocolate box and chintz cliches that come to mind when contemplating the beautiful lakes, spectacular mountains, ancient forests and remarkable heritage of the Kingdom of Kerry. The exquisite picture-perfect town of Killarney, home to Dirreen House, does little to dispel this notion.

A stay at this 4 star B&B is truly an experience to behold. From the very moment of our arrival we were treated rather more like "old friends" than new guests ... a very rare quality in
the hospitality industry today. Proprietor Mary Casey is an exceptional host, but then of course, this is her home. All of Mary's guests are drawn to Dirreen House by the warmth of her hospitality and authentic Irish welcome, where the service alone is an elaborate ceremony of almost forgotten rituals.

Dirreen House is conveniently located in a quiet location on the N22 main Killarney to Tralee road and less than 10 minutes from the bustling town centre of Killarney, with its vibrant shopping, intimate restaurants and old Irish pubs.

You will be welcomed with home baking on arrival, and there is ample parking at the front of the
property. There is a TV lounge and the house is surrounded by a perfectly manicured garden which is available to be enjoyed by all of her guests.

All five guest rooms are en-suite, each equipped with a TV and free WiFi. The bedrooms are stylish, with beautiful fabrics, pristine linen, tea and coffee making facilities and a plethora of other treats. With luxurious bathrooms filled with lashings of toiletries, soft robes and piles of oh-so-fluffy towels, you may never want to leave.

Mary's ambrosial breakfasts are served in the blissfully peaceful dining room and will send you on a voyage to gastronomic nirvana. The menu is extensive, cooked to perfection and served with a smile. Should you decide to whimsy away your time here it will not be wasted and Dirreen House will be embedded in your soul.

We stayed here for 2 nights in June with 2 of our friends whilst on a road-trip around Ireland. We stayed in 5 other 4* B&B's during the week with Dirreen House being the best!!

The house is gorgeous and so immaculately maintained - it really is a 'luxury' B&B with cream carpets throughout, fabulous antique furniture & chandeliers along with high quality luxury bedding & throws & even electric blankets!!!
The rooms all had TV's, tea & coffee making facilities, complimentary toiletries & fluffy bath towels!
There is a lovely lounge for guests to use & well kept gardens to the front & rear too.

The owner Mary was a lovely lady who couldn't do enough for us, she showed us true hospitality & treated us like a relative. She was really helpful with giving us advice on the area too.
Her Irish breakfasts were faultless & cooked to perfection - can't rate them highly enough!
The freshly baked scones, fruit loaf & bread were to die for too! Best breakfasts we have ever had! Mary even insisted we took the left over scones with us for afternoon treats whilst we drove the Ring of Kerry! Such a kind lady!

We cannot rate this place highly enough - luxury stay at an exceptionally reasonable price with a real home from home feel!

We had a wonderful stay at this B&B !!! We arrived without reservation and Ms. Mary was very nice and luckily they had rooms available. The bathroom was sparkling new with a wonderful hot shower and an electric heater (this was great and the first electric heater we had seen in a week, the Temperatures were about 4 degree C ) !!!!! In addition, the bed had an electric blanket, which in Ireland is apparently as rare as the Leprechaun ! We had literally been freezing for over a week until we met Ms. Marry! The breakfast was delicious and she treated us very nice and even helped us find a new B&B in our next stop in Cork. This is a perfect place to stay if you want to do the Ring of Kerry, the location is perfect and she will help you with your travel questions if you need advise. We could not recommend this place enough ! You will not be disappointed! :-) have fun in Ireland ! Sean and Dee from Louisiana, U.S.A

I recently spent 4 nights at the Dirreen House Bed and breakfast. I was impressed with the cleanliness of the room and the atmosphere of the house. Mrs. Casey served wonderful breakfasts and was very friendly and attentive. I found her to be a very pleasant and gracious hostess and would definitely book a room there again in the future.

I read several reviews of B&Bs in Killarney, and ended up choosing the Dirreen House. In retrospect I probably could have found somewhere better. After stopping for directions in the rain, we found the B&B, only to be locked out with no answer at the door. Once we were in and talked to Mary, we found that there was some confusion about our booking. Luckily, the rooms were still available! The rooms were small, and the house smelled slightly of smoke (which I have no tolerance for), however, the beds were comfy and it was clean. We spent the evening in the lounge, which was very warm and cozy. Breakfast was lovely, and Mary served us like a true Grandma - hovering gently, and offering us way more food than we needed. Dirreen House is outside of Killarney, so know that when you book.

Mrs. Casey sincerely cares about the quality of your visit. She will do anything to make your stay more comfortable. Not only do I agree with the recent reviews regarding this property, but I would add that she is a first-rate problem solver after I discovered upon arrival that I had left my handbag behind in a pub several hours away. (Handbag was recovered with all contents!) Mrs. Casey is a kind and lovely lady and getting to know her was an additional plus for our trip.
