“Comfort with maximum class!”
Reviewed 15 June 2013 via mobile

Recent stay during Ireland's "heat" spell we found this hotel, out of the five we stayed in, to be the best for folks who really care about their guests. Accommodations were down home comfort with first class style. Highly recommend this, particularly to the American tourist looking for a relaxed stay with all the amenities of a first class facility. Loved it!

Pulling into the drive is a treat in itself. The long drive with the trees and a little sheep farm along the road. As you pull up there is a gorgeous glass sunroom. Our room had two sets of French doors that opened onto our private balcony with a little table and chairs. The woodwork inside is amazing, the food is delicious in the restaurant. The pub downstairs is also great for a Guinness and local chat. The bartender is full of knowledge. The room was huge and the bathroom was very large and clean. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were perfect. This also had a walk in closet to boot. I didn't want to leave!

Room Tip: If there is no parking in the main area, there is parking behind the ivy covered wall.

We had a fabulous trip to Ireland to celebrate our anniversary, even though we were there during "the worst weather we have had in Ireland in the spring in the last 5 years." We were treated royally at all of our venues with one glaring exception. That was a two-night stay in Cahernane House in Killarney, County Kerry. It was such a bad experience that we have been encouraged to warn others. Briefly, the problem was with the manager of the property. The 2 nights we stayed there, the night weather was brutal -- cold, blowing winds, and driving raining. We were put in a top floor room of the old manor house that was so cold the man who brought our luggage complained. We asked to be moved and we were told that we had booked a "standard" room and that was it. We found out later they had a number of open rooms that and the next night. The manager who is also the wife of the owner was intolerable and unbending. The window had been jammed open and the room was freezing and dank when we arrived. No one could stay there comfortably, especially not 70 year-olds. A long story but when the maintenance man left our room after 12:30 pm (we were tired after a long day) he pronounced our register broken. He would fix it in the morning. He left us with an inadequate electric floor heater. We were cuddled on the heated bathroom floor next to the towel warming rack (without the towels) to endure the night. We tried to move rooms again the next morning to no avail. We were told that the maintenance guy would fix the register and they had turned on the timed heat for an extra hour just to help us. Too bad that does not work when the register is broken. He never fixed the register. The second night was cold, windy, and raining again and we were finally offered a room change at 11:30 pm when we were leaving the next day. By that time of night, we had managed to locate a second heater and we toughed it out. The payoff the next morning was the manager was now sweet and, when I complained, she said all you had to do was press "0" on your phone. Are you kidding me? We spent a better part of a day and two evenings trying to get a habitable room.

I would be very careful going to this hotel. Killarney has a lot of great places. Cahernane House is nostalgic and other staff are great but the manager has them so intimidated that she calls the shots. In over two decades I have not been treated so shabbily or cavalierly or rudely. And it was not a situation that they could not have easily remedied. "Standard room" space was available. The irony was that their posted rate was less than we had paid in an add-on package but we were treated as if we were freeloaders. As an aside I note that their rating has dropped 4 positions on TripAdvisor since before we were there to now, without any input from me. Apparently other guests are having similar problems. This one stop was so awful it marred an otherwise wonderful trip.

Aside from our very, very large room feeling a touch dated, this property excelled across the board. Set quietly back off the main road a couple hundred yards, this estate/hotel was beautifully situated on private grounds and boasted one of the nicest, coziest and authentic sitting parlors and drawing rooms from our extensive trip. When you're burning peat in the fireplace, it sets the tone and the smell for a real Irish manor experience. The rear of the property looks over pastures and to the mountains beyond and the front-left to the expansive sheep pastures. The front area manager was quick to help, available to assist and honestly suggest and recommend per our inquiries. Our included breakfast was very nice and the quality of food fairly high quality and tasty as well, though not something to absolutely rave over. Service was professional, fast and polite and the meals and service in the Cellar Bar were better than expected and very uniquely set and comfortable. Our price was very reasonable (below $200 per night) which was one of the best values-for-what-you-get of our 14 day trip. We would recommend Cahernane House to others.

We only stayed 1 night on a long weekend away from London. This old Irish estate was a lovely experience, relaxing in the period lounge, drinking Irish whisky in the cellar bar, walking around the tranquil grounds. Our room was in the new part of the hotel, large with sitting area, balcony, walk-in wardrobe and spotless bathroom. The breakfast was ample and tasty, although the service was a notch below that received at reception and in the bar. Highly recommended for a step into the past and ambience.

We stayed here for three nights during our ten-day tour of Ireland and had booked Cahernane House early on due to beautiful pictures on the website and tripadvisor reviews. Be forewarned: if you expect cleanliness, comfort, or luxury then you will be sorely disappointed. We paid extra for a room in the "original house." Let's be clear: historical doesn't have to mean dirty, threadbare, and dilapidated. Our bathroom was literally crumbling and peeling away, the cleaning crew apparently does nothing but replace the worn-out and rough towels, and while the farm setting appears tranquil, the fact is that ventilation in the rooms is so poor that we had to open the screen-less windows for air and our room ended up being filled with flies. Service was pretty good but all in all, not what we expected. We couldn't wait to leave. Spare yourself and don't be fooled by the website. Even the pictures on tripadvisor don't convey the dirtiness and age of the rooms.

Drove there from Dublin airport upon arrival- a 3:45hr drive. Stayed 3 nights while driving around the Ring of Kerry and driving to Cork and back on the second day. Staff were very helpful and friendly. The breakfasts were wonderful. The location worked for us as we liked to walk the 15 minutes into town for dinner and then back for exercise.
The food at the hotel was very good. Lovely peaceful spot with gorgeous views. Room 18 was great.
