The Arbutus is located within a short walking distance from the Killarney Train Station which we found as backpackers to be very convenient. The entire staff made us feel very welcome throughout our stay. Betty was particularly accommodating and made us feel quite at home.

Our room was large and very nicely situated above streetlevel with three full length windows that allowed plenty of natural light and fresh air in. Charming restaurants, pubs and shops are all nearby and we never got tired of walking through town and back to the hotel. Breakfast, which was included with the room, was delicious: freshly baked bite-sized scones with butter and jams and gingerbread; fresh fruit and yogurt, not to mention a full Irish Breakfast on the menu and coffee and tea! Would go back again if we have the opportunity!

Room Tip: Suites are large and bright.

We loved this hotel. It has a wonderful feel of times past and is beautifully and carefully decorated to support that ambiance. The location is outstanding for easy access to all that Killarney has to offer.
We enjoyed the Irish breakfast each morning and particularly the kindness of Betty who made sure that we had all that we could want. I honestly think they are the best scones in all of Ireland.
Would not hesitate to recommend this warm, family run hotel to anyone visiting this part of Ireland.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms away from the front of the building.

I have no hesitation recommending this hotel, it's friendly, clean and the food is excellent. In fact I was offered the recipes for three of their specialities - soda bread, gingerbread and scones. Haven't tried them yet but if they taste anything like the ones I had there, I'm in for a treat. Conveniently situated close to the centre of town, the rooms are spacious, traditionally decorated and ours was quiet, despite it being the night of the homecoming of the Kerry Football Team! All in all a very good experience.

Jean,

Thank you very much for that lovely review and recommendation.

It was a pleasure to meet with you and himself (not allowed to use his name in case readers could then identify who you are) during your short stay here.

Love your photo and wonder what are you knitting now and do you ever leave them out of your hands?

Good to see that you thought your room was spacious and was quiet but to be honest it was a pity that there was n’t a little bit of noise in town that night & that it was a victorious home coming for the Kerry team. It would be fair to say that although a great crowd came out to welcome them home the town was numbed by the result of the game the day before. Kerry could have and should have won.

We look forward to welcoming you and your friends back to the Arbutus next year and we may even get a few Kerry scarves!

Slán,

Seán

P.S.

Hope that the baking goes well/

The Arbutus Hotel is a family run hotel, wonderfully located, and decorated with some outstanding pieces of antique furniture and some gorgeous stained glass. A very warm welcome was extended to me and my tour group, with coffee/tea and scones waiting for us upon our late arrival. The reception staff were very helpful with making some last minute dinner reservations that night and throughout our 3 night stay, most helpful and informative with any questions we had. A car park a couple of blocks up the road was free and easy to access. It was easy to relax in the reception rooms in the front of the hotel and tea and scones in the afternoon were a delight! Breakfast was very good and fresh scones were a must first thing in the morning! Betty made sure you had enough to eat and coffee was always at hand. Most definitely a place I will return to again, either with a tour group or with family. Fabulous hotel!

To the Best of the Best,

Thank you very much for bringing your group of happy travellers to The Arbutus. It was truly a pleasure to see how much each individual member enjoyed their time with us and each having a different appreciation/point of interest.

As for the driver who took the master class in driving, what can I say? I’m sure that they’ll be talking about interesting sightings on the island for some time to come!

“Most definitely a place i will return to again, either with a tour group or with family. FABULOUS HOTEL!” Thank you very much, what better compliment can a hotel get, sweet music to our ears. I will share it with all that are involved.

Seán

Thank you very much for staying with us and also for taking the time to post your review.

Delighted to see that you enjoyed your time with us thought that it was “GREAT HOTEL, GREAT LOCATION, GREAT STAFF.” and also that you “Would definitely come again”. I shall pass on to the staff your great feedback to the crew.

With regards to your comment about the breakfast not being included and being expensive. At the Arbutus we believe in choice and giving the guest the right to choose. We have many different options available to guests at time of reservation on our own website and on other travel sites too. We empathise with you on how mind-boggling it can be when trying to compare one hotel against another and what each one is offering and that is why on all our listings we offer superior or deluxe rooms on a Room Only and on a Bed & Breakfast basis.

As for breakfasts being expensive, I am so sorry that this may have been your parting impression of The Arbutus. We pride ourselves in our breakfasts, the quality and freshness of the food, crisp linen settings and friendly service, all of which we aspire to combine together to offer a quality experience at value. Breads and scones are baked every morning and all cooked breakfasts are prepared to order. We source our ingredients from all over Ireland, Killarney for fresh herbs, free range eggs, smoked salmon and fresh fish, Clonakilty for the black and white puddings and we even go to Monaghan for what we consider to be the best premium sausage available. Because your breakfast charge was not hidden in a bundle price you could see what we charge, €12.50 for a full breakfast and €8.50 for Continental which is a limitless use of cold buffet which includes juices, fresh fruit salad, breads, stewed fruits, yogurts along with our own scones brown bread and ginger breads served to you at your table along a choice of teas & coffees. Ironically enough and I appreciate of little comfort to you now (may be even rubbing salt into wounds) but at present we have a special offer going where if one stays 2 nights or more on room only there is complimentary breakfast on the first morning.

Perhaps there was an error in your bill, if so can you please contact the hotel directly and we will sort it. I am sorry if it appears that I am focusing in on what could be a possible negative in your other wise lovely review. I know all you said was that breakfast was expensive and you gave us full marks for value and service. So may be you were just letting readers know that it was expensive but worth it??

Again thank you for the review and I hope that you enjoyed the rest of your vacation.

Hotel is quaint and most of the staff is quite friendly and helpful (Michelle) and breakfast was acceptable.
We stayed 3 nights and all three nights we had to put up with the smokers from the hotel's pub who stand outside in the courtyard to have their smokes. I asked the management if they could ask the patrons to go outside to the front of the pub but nothing was done.

Room service was making the beds, changing towels and emptying baskets.

Room Tip: Stay away from rooms facing coutyard

Scalez,

Thank you for your review.

Alas it is with some surprise and disappointment to us that you think that we do not warrant our 4th star and also that you feel that your issue regarding the smokers was not dealt with during your stay. This is not fair. I believe that there are 3 sides to every story; yours, ours and the truth and rather than getting into an online public debate I will leave it at an apology. Sorry that you did not enjoy your 3 nights at The Arbutus.
