“Wonderful B&B with Amazing Staff”
Reviewed 8 July 2013

My family and I stayed at the Abbey Lodge for 6 nights during our Irish Holiday. The Location could not be any more perfect. We were close enough to walk (5 minutes) to the town to enjoy shopping, food, and the night life, but far enough away to escape the noise of the busy streets. The breakfasts were hot, served fast, and delicious. Perfect for on the go tourists. The room was spacious with comfortable beds, and there was always hot water. The staff could not have been more helpful. They arranged all of our tours, taxis, and went out of there way to make us feel welcome. This is truly a great place to stay.

Excellent position, right in front of one of the entrances of the Park (and a bike rental). City centre is just 5 minutes far (walking) and Abbey Lodge has free parking in a town where parking isn't easy. Our room was spacious, even if the impression is that common areas (especially the lounge) are much more refined and elegant than rooms. Good breakfast.

My wife & I spent 3 nights at Abbey Lodge during a motoring tour of S.W. Ireland in June. Very well situated just three mins from main shopping/eating area. Ample parking in grounds of the house and rooms very comfortable and of a good size. TV service poor if you want to get a weather forecast! Only 7 channels and three of these were in German! TV plug broken in wall socket. Building appeared to have “amalgamated” with next door B&B to form one large entity of about 18 bedrooms and didn’t have the personal feel of other B&Bs. Breakfasts OK – standard generic Irish but nothing special. Shower in bath not to easy to negotiate for older person.

This is a fine place a few blocks from downtown. I stayed two nights with a roommate while on a small group tour. The room felt more like a motel than a B&B in terms of layout and non-descript dated decor. Bathroom had no ventilation. Slept OK; beds rather hard and did not give that pampered feeling of our other B&Bs on the trip. Wireless reached into our room which is a big plus. The common area (sitting room) is very nice, and breakfast excellent. Very good location.

Welcome was distanced and cool. Beds are OK, free WiFi doesn't work because the Abbey has 5 different WiFi channels which push each other out of the frequencies needed. Bathroom had poor ventilation (warning sign on the bathroom door: please shut the door during showering because our fire alarm is very sensitive) and there where cob webs on the curtains (room 18). If you travel by Range Rover, Armani luggage and wearing pearl necklaces, your luggage gets carried to your room and your coffee gets refilled by the staff during breakfast (despite the fact that its an buffet). If you travel by motorcycle, this service is not offered. The main problem: the location is to big for a cosy Inn or Bed & Breakfast, and to small to be a proper hotel. I'll suggest the Castle Inn opposite on the road.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back

The Abbey Lodge was a one night stop for our family. It was in a really good location to walk to Killarney's City Center and a short drive to Killarney National Park. The park is stunning, I highly recommend hiking there for a day or two.

At breakfast I was offered a shot of Baileys for my steel cut oatmeal! I declined, but doesn't that sound yummy?

The owner of the hotel waited on us at breakfast, he was very enjoyable to talk to and wanted to make sure we had a good stay.

We traveled with my 4.5 month old son and wife just a couple weeks back to the Lodge (which is attached and shares breakfast to the Ardree House B&B) in Killarney to spend a few days seeing the Ring of Kerry, Gap of Dunloe, Killarney Park, and Dingle. We had a great experience in the house. The breakfast is good, the room is clean and quite large (we had a double room). The owner is friendly and helpful, even bringing a cot up to the room for our baby. My only gripe was that room was cold at 3am til 5am in the morning due to how the radiator system works, normally I wouldn't notice but my kid woke up. I believe the weather was unseasonably cold then too.

Otherwise it was an excellent stay, location was close to town center and again the owner was extremely accomidating, providing a back entrance to the B&B and suggesting places to eat in town. A great stay over all.

Room Tip: The owner said that the Abbey Lodge has consistently larger rooms than the Ardee House which has roo...
