“Stay away!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 August 2009

We stayed in the so-called 4 Star apartments. Looks great on the advertisement - I've stayed in better cheap student accomodation. The first apartment we were in smelt of smoke and beer, cheap lino tiles on the floors, windows that open with ease outwards (nightmare with the kids), poor noise insulation between apartments, phones that don't work, showers that need the sink taps surned on to get pressure, no bath, warm water in the cold water taps, chaos in the corridors at night with teenage kids on the loose, camper vans in the car park, overflowing food bins in the car park from the hotel, kids club that is more like mass babysitting with teenagers simply standing around watching the kids. When we complained they moved us straight away which was good. The newer apartments are better equipped and clean but the chaos in the corridors at night and the poor noise insulation was the same. The security had no impact in trying to stop them. The Hotel itself is old and beyond a makeover, the bar stinks like an old 1970s lounge, the corridors have torn carpet stuck with duct tape, the shabby walkway to the pool has leaks in the roof that they don't even bother putting a bucket under. If you are a family looking for a relaxing break with your kids in nice apartments with good kids facilities - Stay Away. On complaining we had our entire week refunded in full but our holiday was ruined.

We booked the Riverside appartments which are part of Gleneagle Hotel. They are modern and very comfortable with all facilities.About a week before we were due to stay I received a call from Dietier who is in charge of kids club.He requested names and ages of our children. They received a welcome letter 2 days later telling them of all activities.Thought that this was a v.good move.Boys were really looking forward to going.
Upon check in by pleasent receptionist we were given exact directions to appartments at back of hotel. We were never made to feel as if we were not full guests, at the appartments you are treated just like hotel guest.Lovely welcome pack on arrival. I didn't expect appartment to be serviced during our stay but it was on 2 occassions with full linen change.Plenty of supplies left. The kids club is brillant. It is the 1st time my boys have ever taken part in one (aged 11 and 9!)Club stay excellant.Best holiday ever according to kids even though we always go abroad,Killarney was best.Hotel needs a makeover but guess that it is just too busy.Great size pool, pitch and putt great and discount to shows.Overall a very good experience.Would recommend to families.

I stayed there on a work trip and found the hotel very pleasant, comfortable and convenient. It's on one of the main roads and has a decent car park. I also appreciated the fact that the hotel has its own shop which is open late and sells newspaper, snacks, etc (though no crisps!).
The room was comfortable and bright, and the only complaints I have about it are the lack of tea-making facilities and (minor gripe here) the shower-head is fixed to the wall so it was a bit awkward washing my hair (anyone with long hair will understand).
The breakfast at €12.50 was a bit steep. I wasn't having breakfast anyway but I imagine anyone on hols would want a leisurely breakfast for a lot cheaper.
Otherwise it's a great hotel which caters for people of all ages, families with kids from tots to teens, business travellers, concert-goers, anyone going to Killarney for the craic, etc. I'm recommending it to anyone who's heading down to Co Kerry.

My stay at the hotel peaked with the greeting from the guy in reception when we arrived , from the it was downhill , Rooms looked as it they had not been painted in 10 years, the windows were filthy, the room was grubby with dust ,( reply from hotel told me this is down to room overlooking car park 2 floors below) , bed clothes were new 5 years ago . the fire alarm went off 3 mornings in a row at 8.15am approx. Leisure centre was a little grubby but this would be hard to control with the amount of people/kids using it as it is very popular .Pool itself was great for the kids but water looked very cloudy and had a lot of "foreign bodies" i.e plasters, hair grips, grit etc over the 3 nights we were there .
We had to queue for breakfast every morning and instead of a simple sign to inform us of such so we could prepare we were barked at to leave our room number and queue up like everyone else and when we were called if we didn't make it to the table in 5 sec's flat we were chastised that our table would be given away if we didn't " put a move on" as it was put to me one morning (2 kids in tow make it hard to go from recepion to table in under 30 seconds) .
Breakfast was good and staff attentive .
Kids had beans and toast in pub resturant for 4.95 a head !! we were charged almost €5 for pot of tea .
And to top it all off , they debited my card twice and now have to wait for a refund ,
The shame about this hotel is that it has/had huge potential as its facilities for familes are about the best I have seen , playroom, video room, indoor play gym, pool etc but it these are enclosed in dull peeling paint, shoddy carpets/flooring and unkept public areas its a waste of time . Some of the more long term staff seen you as an inconvienience . Leisure centre staff and reception staff were great.
The room rate was good value for the area but this may represent more the prices other hotels are charging.
This hotel only had one chance to make a first impression and it did , but not a good one.
I have also put these issue to the hotel while I was there .
Thanks Tommie

Having returned to the hotel for a nightcap, we were approached by a member of staff to ask if we wanted breakfast in the morning. When we asked if it was included in our rate, he told us it was, even though he didn't check it. I ordered 2 breakfasts to be brought to the room.

The breakfasts were average to say the least. The bill was shocking. E30 for the food, E10 for the room service. Will definitely not return to the hotel and will not recommend it either.

I was expecting more of this hotel from the reviews it had got. Our bed was comfortable but the shower was just about working, there was a hole in the bathroom ceiling, and not to mention a rather dodgy stain on one of the blankets on our bed....
I think I'd stay somewhere nicer if I was going to the INEC again. The only thing it really has going for it is that its linked to the INEC.
