“Such friendly staff”
Reviewed 20 July 2013

We spent 3 nights at this hotel in June. We found the staff in every part of the hotel very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The food was delicious and cooked to a very high standard. We were pleasantly surprised how reasonably priced it all was. The location was ideal, being close but not too close to Killarney town. We were worried about traffic noise (being country dwellers) as it is right on the main road but it was not a problem at all. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel and wish them all the luck in the present financial climate.

Room Tip: Choose a room at the rear, but most important explain your needs to the staff who we are sure will d...

I arranged the small training group that stayed in Darby O’Gills Country House Hotel on 22 & 23 March 2013 and which was referred to in the review posted by EricaML on 2 April, entitled ‘Disregard for the customer’.

However, there is another side to the picture painted in that review which it only fair to highlight. I should also mention that the generally negative views expressed there did not necessarily reflect the views of the group as a whole, but only those of the individual concerned.

The management at the hotel went to great trouble with their welcome and hospitality to make us feel welcome. In comparison, prior to travelling to Killarney, we had stayed in another hotel in Galway where the service and indeed the food quality were clearly inferior, so this was definitely a distinct improvement.

Darby O’Gills is undergoing renovation at the moment, so inevitably not all was perfect. It was unfortunate that our colleagues were disturbed by the late night revelry on the second (Saturday) night and this is certainly something the management needs to look into, as she was not alone among the reviewers in highlighting the problem. The current renovation also needs to provide a remedy for the cold water problem in the mornings, which is unacceptable.

I do want to put on record that, while the reviewer had some legitimate complaints to air, the implication that the (new) management was not doing its job and/or didn’t care about looking after our group was unfair and did not match our overall experience.

Our Stay was from March 25, -March 28, 2013... We came from Twin Falls, Idaho as part of an EF Tour group for our stay in Ireland. We arrived right before dinner and were greeted warmly and then given keys to our very comfortable rooms. The beds were phenomenal (Comfortable, you sunk into luxury and didn't want to get up) clean sheets and they smelled of lavender - and being a person who has traveled extensively and stayed in some very fine hotels-They were comparable to some of the best including the Plaza in NY City and Trump Tower. We had a huge bathtub complete with shower, luxurious towels, additional pillows in our room, very clean and odor free... The Coffee was the best that we enjoyed while on our 9 day tour and we were given a complimentary sample from the kitchen... The food was very tasty-Our menu because of the tour was pre-selected for us, but I heard no complaints and we were even treated to homemade apple pie. The kids were made to feel that they could hang out everywhere in the hotel and the only snafu that we experienced was in order to use WI-FI -you had to be close to the lobby area. So many of us were technology hounds that it couldn't accommodate all the people that needed it at one time -but compared to the wonderful, personable, staff and the surroundings... It was a very minor problem. We were treated to deer, rabbits, sheep and other animals as near away as our window and we were able to enjoy the beauty of the Irish countryside while we were there. We felt perfectly comfortable, perfectly safe and well cared for. I will be returning in 2014 and can't wait for another enjoyable stay!

Room Tip: Higher rooms have a better view and we were on the backside so it was very quiet.

I've never written any negative comment regarding a place I stayed before, but what happened in this hotel during my stay cannot go unnoticed. I stayed there from 22/3/2013 until 24/3/2013 and as we all had to wake up really early (I was part of a group) I could never imagine that on the second night they would have a function in the hotel that would end only at 2.30am! My roommate complained and the function was over soon afterwards. But then the party re-started right below our windows. After a while someone had the decency to remove people from the surroundings. We could not sleep and I thought everything was a real joke. The manager said on the following day that the hotel has a function room and that the party should have finished at 1am. Well, that's fine, but then customers should be advised about this and the parties, especially if they are going to stay in a bedroom right above the function room and have to wake up early! The excuse for not respecting our group was the fact that it was a 'little group' (compared to the big amount of people in the function room!)That means I'll probably recommend another option in Killarney for my clients in the future (I'm a tour guide). If you want a place to sleep well and want to go to this hotel, make sure you enquire about when the parties take place. If you're going for the parties, then this is a good place. If you want to take a shower enquire about the best time to do so. 3 friends of mine had cold water in the morning and the explanation is that the boilers have capacity for only as much hot water and many people were having showers at the same time. :-( . Apart from these things => they offer good dinner, have kind staff in the restaurant area and good bed. Just don't seem to care about the other aspects of how to look after people.
