“Take a carriage ride to the castle!”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

We rented a horse carriage in town and thoroughly enjoyed Michael and Bella (horse) as we rode through the park and stopped at the Castle. While we did not have time to enter the castle, we took some fun photos on the steps.

“amazing castle world class views”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

the ground of the castle are free and have some of the most beautiful walks and views in the world. you could easily spend the day here if the weather is nice. we took the tour of the castle. it was very interesting, but a word of caution. the lady at reception told me it would be ok to bring my baby as she was in a baby carrier and that my 5 year old would be fine. However, the spiral staircase is very treacherous and the 5 year old tripped at the top of stairs nearly taking me with him. had i not managed to catch him, there is no way he'd have survived the fall. its not suitable for anyone unsteady on their feet, or small children and I certainly wouldnt recommend it with a baby strapped to your front impeding your view of your feet! But for the able-bodied, it was a wonderful tour, well worth the money.

“Muck & Murder - The kids just loved it”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

We took the guided tour of the interior of the castle on Sunday. For a family of 4 it was €10. (Children 5 and under free). There is a reception area with displays showing the history of the castle. There is no charge at looking at the reception area.
Our tour guide brought us into the various rooms in the castle. The castle looks big from the outside , but, there are surprisingly very few rooms on the inside. Each of the rooms had a story and much of the features of castle were to do defending it from attack.
The kids were very much impressed with the "murder hole". Also the storey with hanging your clothes at night in the unhygienic toilet (the fumes from the toilet kills the bugs and lice in the clothes) was a big hit with the kids.
The tour lasted about 1/2 house and was good value. If you are not good on your feet I would give a hint of caution. The spiral stone stair case is very steep and you would need to be sure footed to go up and down it.
Outside the castle is very scenic as you are beside the Killarney lakes. Ideal place for the family picnic.
Also there are miles of walking paths through the surrounding woodlands. This area was historically used for mining and the remains of the mines can still be seen.
All told you could spend a great few hours in and around Ross Castle. An ideal venue for a family day out.

“A Jaunting Car Ride to Ross Castle”
Reviewed 26 May 2014

Our tour provided a jaunting car horse drawn ride from The Brehon Hotel to view nearby Ross Castle. This was an early morning excursion but very picturesque as we were driven in the park near a beautiful lake to view the stately Ross Castle. If your tour does not include it, you might consider booking it separately - it will be worth the extra cost.
