“Beautiful scenery did not go inside”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 July 2014

Make sure you plan your visit around their tour times. We did not research in advance and when we arrived we were told another tour would not begin for 45 minutes. We decided not to wait around but it seemed like a pretty cool castle. The grounds were beautiful and despite rainy weather we enjoyed spending a few minutes around the grounds.

“Interesting old ruin”

We enjoyed walking around the grounds, and if we'd had time would have joined one of the guided tours. Even so, we had some very pretty views of the lake.

“Excellent guide”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 July 2014

We had an excellent guide who told us about the owners of the castle, its history and architecture. We didn't have any ghosts or legends, just pure fact which is what we prefer. The exhibition area where you wait for your guide was well laid out on 8 or so boards and worth a read before you go round. The rooms are sparsely furnished as they would have been, but for some reason you are not allowed to take photographs. The tour lasted 45 minutes and we thoroughly enjoyed it. There is a small cafe kiosk on site and you can hire a boat.

“Spectacular Old Ruins”

This was a gem that was not on our original must see list, but since we were in the Muckross House area, we decided to go take a look. Very much worth the drive.

“Fascinating Ross Castle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 July 2014

Spent a fascinating half hour or so on a guided tour of Ross Castle. You can't visit the castle under your own steam, you have to join a group, but the numbers are limited and our guide was really fantastic - full of interesting facts and stories, not only about Ross Castle itself but also about the wider history of Kerry and Ireland. The only thing you have to be careful about are the spiral staircases - they were specially made to deter attackers; the result of which is that modern 'invaders' also have to watch their step when ascending and descending them. Would highly recommend this attraction in Killarney.
