Owner description: This 15th-century castle is the subject of numerous historical myths, including that of a ghost who still makes appearances at the castle.

Visited Ross Castle and took the tour; glad we did. The guide was first rate and as we moved up the five levels of the tower, we learned so much about life in a tower castle; and not all of it glamorous. Each floor was decorated as it might have been in the 1400's - as each floor had a purpose. From servants quarters to guard quarters, kitchen, parlour, bedroom, and main dining and parlour. Even featured a rudimentary toilet. Amenities were limited and life in the castle would not have been easy. Situated on the lake the castle provides a good history of life in Ireland during this time. Provided a good overview of Irish Chieftans at the time and how they influenced the early history of Ireland.
Consider Ross House if you are in Killarney.

This was a unique experience for a castle visit. The original interior was entirely restored to its medieval glory. This was a wonderful educational experience, as they used the architectural designs to educate tourists on the way of life. The conservationists took it a step further to acquire accurate furnishings.

The reason this was only given a four was the following shortfalls:
1. The exterior property was not similarly restored, and while striking it lacked the comparable education.
2. There were no pictures allowed inside. I understand the purpose, but I would have appreciated the lifelong memories of this unique property.

It is definitely worth a trip, especially on the same day as Muckross House, as they are such opposite experiences.

Tip: Free entrance the first Wednesday of every month.

Small as castles go, busy a bit expensive for what you see and you have to take the tour but nice views

WE did not so the tour - which may have changed our perspective. This was part of our bike riding day and seeing the National Park on bikes. It was very accessible and a fine stop to make.

We spent 20 euro to go on a boat on the lake ( and a very ordinary tour of about a quarter of the lake) and booked the castle tour for after that. As the boat was late out because of a family and back, we missed our tour by a minute and was told we couldn't go on the next one as it was booked. The castle visit was on a Wednesday, being 'Free Day' about 12 people to take though and we couldn't take the next one - seriously? The lady on the counter as very rude and very much a ticket n***. Does your town want tourists or not? Very disappointing considering it was late in the afternoon and barely anyone else. I would have no objections if it was at peak time but seriously, it's a castle, how much room do you need for tour?
Don't bother, every other town has a castle to tour.
