It's a choice spot to visit...so clean and well maintained..plus a castle! There are picnic tables and lots of open space by the lake to sit. This is a photographer's dream..so unspoilt. The views across the lake are spectacular. There are boats for hire also. Lots of wildlife for the children to see. Public toilet facilities could be better maintained.

Visited Ross Castle and took the tour; glad we did. The guide was first rate and as we moved up the five levels of the tower, we learned so much about life in a tower castle; and not all of it glamorous. Each floor was decorated as it might have been in the 1400's - as each floor had a purpose. From servants quarters to guard quarters, kitchen, parlour, bedroom, and main dining and parlour. Even featured a rudimentary toilet. Amenities were limited and life in the castle would not have been easy. Situated on the lake the castle provides a good history of life in Ireland during this time. Provided a good overview of Irish Chieftans at the time and how they influenced the early history of Ireland.
Consider Ross House if you are in Killarney.

This was a unique experience for a castle visit. The original interior was entirely restored to its medieval glory. This was a wonderful educational experience, as they used the architectural designs to educate tourists on the way of life. The conservationists took it a step further to acquire accurate furnishings.

The reason this was only given a four was the following shortfalls:
1. The exterior property was not similarly restored, and while striking it lacked the comparable education.
2. There were no pictures allowed inside. I understand the purpose, but I would have appreciated the lifelong memories of this unique property.

It is definitely worth a trip, especially on the same day as Muckross House, as they are such opposite experiences.

Tip: Free entrance the first Wednesday of every month.

Small as castles go, busy a bit expensive for what you see and you have to take the tour but nice views

WE did not so the tour - which may have changed our perspective. This was part of our bike riding day and seeing the National Park on bikes. It was very accessible and a fine stop to make.
