I am an outdoorsy type of girl. We took a drive to the Gap of Dunloe on a sunny, clear, day. Had a great time with some amazing photo opportunities.

Myself and my partner arrived at KK cottage. As soon as we got out of our car we were shouted at by the Ponytrap guides as to our interest in taking a trip with them through the gap. We declined. There was a sign at the entrance stating that the road was "primarily" for walkers, pony and traps and for local access. We felt then like we were going to have to take a pony and trap and that we were not going to be allowed to drive through. However we decided to ask a local lady. She advised us that we could take our car and that the pony trap guides simply just did not like people driving but that it most certainly was not forbidden. The pony trap trips were 35 euro for anyone who is interested. The drive and scenery was absolutely beautiful but tourists should not be intimidated into taking Ponytraps if they want to drive. Some of the route is narrow and we did meet other cars and some Ponytrap guides along the way but there was plenty of room to get by. However we were given dirty looks by some of the guides...very hostile. They should not be allowed to guard the entrance...They dont own it! Drive if you wish and ignore them!

We had a gorgeous day for walking and took the bus/boat tour from O'Connor's Pub. Almost all of the people on the tour chose to take the carts, but I'm really glad we didn't. They say it's a 7 mile walk, but the scenery makes you forget how long you've been walking. We're no olympic athletes (we just walk the dog a mile or two each day) and it was easy for us to complete in a little over 2 hours.

My sister-in-law said the Gap of Dunloe was her family's favorite place in Ireland, and we can see why. We stayed at the beautiful Loch Lein in Kerry, and our first day there went over to Kate Kearny's Cottage and took a jaunty ride through the Gap. It was a beautiful ride, and our driver, Derry, was great. Highly recommend!

Gorgeous scenery. Nice drive. Stop along the way and take pictures - the lakes and mountains are lovely. Watch for sheep on the road.
