“Nicest staff in good value hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 September 2011

This week, I stayed in the Earl of desmond Hotel, and was extraordinarily pleased with the hotel's public areas and the helpfulness of the staff, both at reception and in the bar/ restaurant. My room was very comfortable and cozy as well, with TV Channels from Ireland, Germany and the UK. The staff tried everything to look after me and my group, and made me feel welcome. It is a wee bit away from Tralee, but very accessible by car from both Killarney and Tralee, you won't get lost and waste precious holiday time looking for the hotel. A taxi to Tralee will cost between 10-12 Euros, and there is ample parking at the hotel. Unfortunatelym there is no room service, but the great quality of service overall compensates for this.

Room Tip: I stayed in the third floor, and the corridors were nicely decorated with recently refurbished couch...

We stayed 4 nights at this hotel as part of a National Holidays coach trip to Kilarney. It was good value and we enjoyed our stay. There were 5 coach trips staying at the hotel and the catering team managed to get our dinner served in a highly organised manner. The food was fresh and very good for what we paid. The staff were cheerful and helpful. The bar had great atmosphere, mainly down to the people, staff and entertainment on Monday and Wednesday evening. The guy on Tuesday was not enthusiastic about his songs, pity.

With 160+ rooms this hotel, which is some years old, has a major maintenance job. Problems we reported were quickly remedied. The rooms were spacious with plenty of storage space. There was plenty of hot water and everything was kept clean. It would be nice to have a larger TV but we only had time to watch it on a couple of occasions.

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the rear away from the road

My wife and I stayed at the Earl of Desmond hotel in early August 2011, for 4 nights stay with National Holidays.
What a pleasant surprise to find that some poor reviews that we had seen turned out to be completely incorrect!
The hotel appears to be well managed by The White Hotel Group, I understand that this is a recent change, but don't know how long since this happened.
Our room was pleasantly decorated, clean and had a garden view, as do all the rear rooms. (The front rooms overlook the garden/parking area, which is not bad either) as the hotel is not in a built-up location.
The food was excellent, well cooked, hot, tasty and well presented. The dining room was very efficiently managed, the staff were friendly and quick to respond (positively) to guests requests for additional sauces, water etc. Breakfasts were self-serve cereals/porridge/fruit from a central area, with hot food (all you would expect for full English/Irish breakfasts) from an area to one side of the dining room. Toast and coffee or tea were brought to the table by the waitresses, all you need to do is just ask and they return speedily with top-ups.
Reception staff were friendly and knowledgeable.
There was entertainment in the evenings, not top of the range stuff, but "easy to enjoy" local acts.
Was there anything not good? well -- yes, we found the bathroom a bit "tired" and you have to look behind the shower screen to find the toilet flush, but that was more than made up for by all the efficiency of the rest of the hotel, including the room cleaning and towel changing etc.
We thought that this hotel was a great place to stay for our trip.

Stayed here recently for one night got a great offer through Super Valu but once we arrived they knew nothing about our booking but it was quickly resolved. We have booked several times through Super Valu and have never had a problem so...... Reception area is large and modern and clean with a beautiful grand piano, we had great hopes for the room. Corridor to room was very long and carpet seemed dirty or wet we weren’t too sure. Room was very basic, no mod cons, cheap looking furniture, this could be reflective of the price we paid although next morning rooms along the corridor were open for cleaning purposes and they all looked the same as ours, but our bathroom seemed to have been renovated recently so maybe rooms are next. Breakfast room was bright and spacious with a view of the garden, good selection of hot and cold food. Staff in the breakfast room were very friendly. Updating rooms and the corridor to the standard of the reception area would make this a fab hotel.

Based on some reviews here I was expecting dated rooms and indifferent service. This was not the case.

The foyer is large, modern and attractive.

My single room was on the ground floor, next to the front carpark but it was quiet, comfortable, spotlessly clean bathroom, and much more spacious than your average European hotel room. Front desk staff were friendly and efficient. I had an evening meal in the bar which was very tasty and enjoyable.

I was happy that the roomrate of €50 on a Thurs night was good value. I found the traditional accordion player/signer in the bar to be overly noisy and disruptive to my conversation with my friends but non-Irish visitors probably came there to hear that, and I could have moved further away if I wished.

Saw lots of tour groups milling about.

My Mom and 2 Sisters stayed here on a midweek break we arrived on a Sunday and had our Dinner there that evening, big msitake it was uneatable, seemed like it was just reheated everything soggy was terrible. Hotel staff not very knowledgeable every time we asked them a question the answer was" to be honest i haven t a clue". No atmosphere what so ever. Wont be staying there again.

We went with friends on a 5 day National holidays coach trip from the north east of England. We had a 14hr journey and arrived at 9.30 pm but the restaurant was kept open for us. Available for breakfast were the usual cereals fruit juices and porridge which you served yourself with. A good selection of fried food was available and you have to go to a serving area pick up your plate and select the food you wanted. The food was fresh and hot. At your table the waiters constantly came round the table offering coffee, tea, and top ups, always served fresh and hot. Nothing was any trouble to them. Evening meal was three choices of each of the three courses and everyone was served hot, well cooked food and plentiful. Bedroom, shower, towels and toilets spotless, and tea/coffee making facilitys available. Everyone on our table were very pleased with everything about the hotel. The hotel is a little out of the way and the drinks we found were quite expensive. In summary, food good, rooms good, staff great and in my opinion top end of its 3 star rating, spoilt a little by the expensive drinks
