“Great Hotel”
Reviewed 25 September 2013

Family and friends stayed for 3 days in July 2013. The staff were very helpful and friendly and the food excellent.
The location is excellent for touring north Kerry. We would certainly recommend this hotel .

Have not stayed in the hotel here just ate in the Bar part. the food was very good, went for a salmon salad with BBQ marinaded salmon for a starter, very tasty and generous portion. I got scampi and chips for the main which was nothing spectacular but nice.
We were rushed out a bit because it was busy at about 7pm ish an hour after we ate but can understand they needed the tables too!! Nice spot, ate there for a wedding before too, they definitely do good food!

We chose to stay in this room because of the little extras – coffee machine, home baked cookies, complementary pass to the spa, but we got some extras we weren’t expecting.

We made a list and brought it down to the reception, the list included the following:
- Dust all over the coffee machine
- Hair left in the drawer from the previous guest
- False eyelash lying by the sink
- Dirt marks on the glass coffee table
- Spa brochures with dirt on them
- Shoe box with receipts belonging to previous guest in the drawer and rubbish
- Junior suite was supposed to have home baked cookies included – there wasn’t any.

One lady apologised profusely for everything and said that this is not their normal standard and said she would look into it and bring us to another room. She said that the supervisor had “cleaned” our room this morning and that there was going to be trouble: which made us feel uncomfortable. If this is the supervisor’s standard, than what is the standard of the people she is supervising. She then brought us to an alternative room. She came back with two glasses of wine and strawberries, when she left we picked up the glasses and realised there was fluff inside and outside both glasses, so they hadn’t been cleaned properly either. At this point we were inclined to let this go as the new room seemed nice. Then we went to make a coffee – I reached for the cups and both were dirty, that is when we said enough is enough, we’re going. We brought the cup down to the front desk, and showed it to the receptionist and said that we would like a refund and no longer wish to stay there. She immediately took it and put it out of sight and called another lady. We told her that we were not happy, that this is the second room we have seen and it’s just one dirty thing after another. She said the rooms are cleaned every day and that 80% of the rooms are occupied, we said it’s the second room and they are not cleaned very well. She said that the other lady was to go back to our second room to make sure it was ok and that maybe it wasn’t ready for us yet, but it was clear to us that this was a room that the cleaners had finished with and we had been given the room at this point. WWe had now spent over an hour in the hotel and it was just unpleasant. We got a refund, but the receptionist remained defensive about their standards of cleaning – even with the dirty cup in her hand. They didn’t offer to clean the room or to inspect the room or anything else, they had a take it or leave it attitude.

We are not being overly fussy here, for €110 euros a night it is not wrong of us expect a clean room.

Room Tip: Inspect the room when you arrive!

Been coming here for years, our latest stay being this week for the Listowel races. From the rooms to the food and staff this hotel is very special. It really does have the feeling of a family hotel and you feel part of that, not just a number. We will be back as per usual next year for Listowel. Ps ... The new road outside the hotel makes it a dream drive to listowel now.

Had a great stay at Ballygarry House. We stayed two nights and attended a family wedding. The wedding meal was divine! We also had a fab lunch on arrival and it was great to have breakfast cooked to order on first day atwhich would be a personal preference. Staff were so friendly and such attention to detail. Rooms very comfortable and so spacious! Staff in spa were so accommodating and managed to fit us in for extra appointments at short notice. Great base to return to after a days touring. Will definitely be back!
